The junction was where the paths diverged. The junction was the point where the first zone's interior geography split into two distinct approach routes, each leading to a different guardian.
Left approach: heat. The radiating quality of sustained, enormous thermal output reaching backward along the corridor.
Right approach: cold. Not the cold of Northrend's ambient character — the cold of altitude and sky, the quality of open air above clouds, the character of something whose natural domain was above rather than inside.
Leylin looked at both approaches. "Here," he said. He reached through the mask and called the Ninjakhan. Twenty shadows materialized from the mask.
He divided them without ceremony. Ten to the left group. Ten to the right. The Ninjakhan received the division with the wordless efficiency.
"Muradin," he said. "Ignis. Left approach." He looked at Alleria, at Sylvanas, at Aminel, at Liadrin. "The forge construct production is the primary complication. Liadrin's Light addresses the constructs most efficiently. Aminel's disruption capability addresses the Furnace Master's casting. Alleria and Sylvanas cover approach angles and add ranged pressure. The Ninjakhan are yours to direct as the engagement develops."
He looked at Muradin specifically. "You are leading this group," he said. "Not tactically advising. Leading. The engagement's decisions are yours."
Something in Muradin's expression settled — receiving a responsibility they have been building toward and finding it fitting when it arrives. "Understood," Muradin said.
Then Leylin looked at his own group. Vereesa, Tyr'ganal, Thrall and Arcturis. "Razorscale," he said. "We go right."
The groups separated. Muradin led left. Alleria fell in behind him with the immediate adaptation to a different leader's pace — the adjustment subtle but present.
Sylvanas moved on the left flank without being directed to. She had read the corridor's approach in the same fraction of a second that Alleria had, and the left flank was the position that the corridor's tactical logic suggested before any instruction organized it.
Aminel had the relay's portable monitoring configuration active — the compact field version of the system that provided real-time magical intelligence without the full anchor capacity of the camp's installation. She read the Ignis approach as they moved through it.
"The thermal output is intensifying with our approach," she said. "Not a response to us specifically — the ambient reading suggests the intensity has been building for longer than our transit time in this corridor. It may be a cyclical pattern in the Furnace Master's operational cycle rather than a threat response."
"Or it knows we're coming," Liadrin said, with the paladin's pragmatic acknowledgment that ambient intelligence and threat response were not always cleanly distinguishable.
"Both are possible," Aminel said. "I flagged it so we are not surprised by either."
Muradin was reading the walls as he walked — the inscriptions, the construction's character at this approach depth, the way the thermal quality of the stone changed as they drew closer to the source. His hand ran along the surface with the tactile, evaluating quality of a dwarf reading stone the way a scholar read text.
"The forge systems are active," he said. "All of them. It hasn't degraded the forge's operational capacity. If anything —" He stopped. Felt the wall for another moment. "The forge is running hotter than average blacksmith's capacity as optimal operational temperature."
"Which means the constructs it produces are —" Alleria said.
"Overclocked," Muradin said, which was the dwarf's word for a thing running beyond what its design parameters intended. "Stronger than they should be. Faster than they should be. And significantly less stable, because that is what running something past its design threshold produces."
The Ninjakhan moved through the corridor in the distributed way of beings who covered space without occupying it — present at every approach angle without being at any single one.
The corridor opened. Ignis the Furnace Master was inside — the fire giant, the Titan overseer of the forge systems that produced the outer guardians — occupied the forge chamber the way the Flame Leviathan had occupied its zone.
The amplification was visible in the immediate, ambient quality of the chamber — the forge fires beyond their operational parameters, the molten material in the slag pits running at temperatures that the Titan construction's safety threshold had clearly been designed to maintain as the upper boundary rather than the operating condition.
And the heat. Real, immediate, physical heat that arrived at the group's position the moment they crossed the chamber threshold with the flat, unambiguous communication of an environment that was not comfortable for living things.
Ignis turned. The eyes whose visual sensors had been built around thermal expression — found them with the immediate, comprehensive targeting of intruders.
Then it spoke, and the speaking had the enormous resonance of a voice carrying within it. It moved toward them.
"Now," Muradin said. The Ninjakhan went first. Not into direct engagement — the organized flanking that beings built for unseen movement employed when direct engagement was not their function.
They moved to the chamber's perimeter positions with the immediate, fluid quality of their dispersal, covering the approach angles to the slag pits that the engagement's tactical picture identified as the positions the forge constructs would emerge from.
Ten Ninjakhan in ten positions, each one carrying the compressed capability of beings who were specifically suited to the construct management function that the forge's continuous output would demand.
Alleria went to the elevated position the chamber's construction provided — a maintenance platform that the Titans had built for the functional purpose of allowing oversight of the forge operations from above.
And that provided the elevated angle that a ranger required to place fire across a chamber of this scale without the ground-level clutter of the forge elements interrupting the sightlines.
Sylvanas took the opposite elevation. The two sisters did not coordinate this explicitly. They did not need to.
Liadrin moved to the center position — the paladin's function of being the organizing presence around which the ground engagement resolved.
Aminel took the position behind Muradin's approach line — the mage's function in this engagement being the disruption of Ignis's casting cycles rather than the primary damage output.
Muradin went straight at Ignis. The hammer came up and directly engaged in close combat.
The right approach smelled of sky — the literal character of the Razorscale zone's approach was the open-air quality of altitude. The cold clean of high elevation pressing down the corridor toward the group.
Leylin felt Arcturis' awareness extending ahead — the spirit bear's non-visual perception of the zone reaching the signature of the thing that occupied it before visual range had closed.
"She's ahead," he said. Vereese had the bow ready. Not drawn — the moment requiring the draw is not yet this moment but is close enough that the position is the appropriate one.
Thrall walked with both hands open, ready to call forth the elements. Tyr'ganal was reading the approach with the scholar's attention — the inscriptions on these corridor walls were different from the forge approach's inscriptions, carrying a different character of Titan text that his developing read of the interior's textual geography was beginning to distinguish.
"Containment protocols," he said quietly. "These walls describe containment rather than production. The inscriptions are scientific records."
"They were controlling Veranus," Leylin said.
"And her broods," Tyr'ganal confirmed. "The inscriptions suggest the relationship was collaborative rather than supervisory."
This landed with the additional weight of understanding what Veranus had been before she was twisted into a vicious weapon.
The zone opened. She was enormous. This was the first quality that was observed. The proto-drakes were ancient. Their broodmother was older than the ancient. Big iron plates were fused into Razorscale's scales which further enhanced its deadly strikes.
"The harpoons," he said to Thrall and Vereesa, then indicated the Titan harpoon emplacements at the zone's perimeter with the direct indication of someone who had known these were here and had planned around their presence.
Vereesa understood the harpoon mechanisms and had an adaptive capability of using available features as weapons. "I can operate two," she said.
"Take them," he said. The Ninjakhan dispersed to the perimeter positions — ten positions covering the dark rune wardens and sentinels that the zone's corrupted guardian system would produce as the engagement escalated.
Razorscale's attention found them. It let out a load rare and opened its mouth towards their direction, then fire came immediately.
Leylin quickly moved left as the fire tracked right. Arcturis moved right, the spirit bear's immediate, coordinated divergence creating the split-attention demand that was the first tactical objective.
Thrall's lightning met Razorscale from the left flank — the elemental channels distorted but functional. The lightning arriving at the proto-drake's left wing disrupting its rhythm.
Vereesa quickly used the harpoon turret and immediately released one. The harpoon left the emplacement with the enormous, mechanical force directed at a target of appropriate scale, the cable following it with the purpose of holding it down.
Razorscale felt the harpoon's impact and pulled against it. The cable held. She was enormous and the cable was hooked properly.
Leylin directed the fire at the wound around the harpoon's contact point — which could divert its attention. The second harpoon fired from the second emplacement as Vereesa moved to it.
Razorscale descended. Not willingly — the two harpoons' combined containment force was what was bringing her down, the Titan engineering performing exactly the function it had been built to perform against exactly the scale of creature it had been built to contain.
She hit the zone floor with the impact of something this large making contact with stone — enormous, reverberating through the Titan construction in the deep way of significant structural events.
Leylin moved toward her. The dark rune guardians came from the perimeter. The Ninjakhan were already there.
They addressed the guardians with the compressed efficiency that had been built into them for exactly this function — ten beings occupying the perimeter positions, each one managing the threat at its assigned angle.
The collective management converting what should have been an overwhelming flanking pressure into a contained, distributed problem that the perimeter was holding rather than the center having to address simultaneously with the primary engagement.
Tyr'ganal's arcane disruption arrived timely — the scholar's precise interruption had disrupted the guardians attempt of using runes. Thrall directed the earth's elemental capability at the approaching constructs' footing rather than at the constructs themselves.
Vereesa placed harpoon-assisted fire into the secondary guardians while managing the mechanism's next cycle. At Razorscale's grounded position, Leylin reached the broodmother.
In the forge chamber: Muradin had found his rhythm against Ignis.
The hammer and the fire giant had been engaged for long enough that the dynamic quality that combat developed when both parties had read each other sufficiently to move past the opening phase's mutual probing into the sustained, real exchange of determined combatants.
Ignis reached for him. He was not there. The experienced dwarf's relationship with large opponents — built across a lifetime of fighting things that were significantly larger than dwarves.
Alleria's arrows found their target, aiming at Ignis vital spots. Aminel disrupted the giant's attempt at using magic. Sylvanas assisted the Ninjakhans while they hold their positions. Liadrin held the center with the Light burning bright against the forge's overwhelming thermal output.
Two battles. Both progressing. Ulduar's interior receiving what they were doing the way very old places received things. The engagement continued.
