Chapter 10 - FOR HER SAFETY

Chapter Ten: For Her Safety

The sirens didn't scream.

They waited.

Blue and red light washed over the house, steady and patient, circling like a net being pulled tight.

John Knight stood near the window, watching the reflections crawl across the walls.

"How many?" he asked.

Sam checked the screens.

"Police vans. Armed response. Drones."

A pause.

"And unmarked cars. Scar's reach is already here."

Footsteps echoed behind them.

Their mother entered the hall.

Calm. Upright. Unafraid.

Her eyes moved once over the room—over her children, over the light outside—and settled.

"So," she said quietly,

"they've come."

Eva stepped toward her.

"Maa—"

She raised a hand.

"I'm fine."

John met her gaze.

"They'll push if we resist."

She nodded once.

"Then don't give them reason."

Outside, the loudspeaker crackled.

"Occupants of the house—this is law enforcement.

Exit the building slowly with your hands visible."

Jack flexed his hands.

"Say it, John."

John didn't hesitate.

"We surrender," he said.

The room went still.

Not broken.

Focused.

Ana stepped forward.

She hadn't spoken yet—but she had been listening.

John turned to her.

"Ana."

She met his eyes without blinking.

"When they take us," he said,

"you move."

She nodded immediately.

"I already know where."

"You take my mother," John continued.

"Change routes. No patterns."

"I'll be gone before the cuffs close," she said calmly.

"No phones. No witnesses."

Their mother looked at Ana for a long moment.

Then smiled.

"Good," she said.

"You don't hesitate."

Ana returned the look.

"No," she replied.

"I don't."

John lowered his voice.

"They may watch you later."

"They won't catch me," Ana said.

"And if they try—"

She paused.

"They'll regret wasting the effort."

John studied her.

Then nodded once.

"Keep her safe."

Ana's answer was immediate.

"She won't even hear their names."

The door shook as officers repositioned outside.

John turned back to his siblings.

"Remember," he said quietly.

"This ends when we decide it does."

Eva nodded.

Sam's jaw tightened.

Will adjusted his stance.

Jack smiled once—slow and dangerous.

The front door opened.

Light flooded in.

John walked out first.

Hands raised.

Unshaken.

Eva followed.

Then Sam. Will. Jack.

Commands were shouted.

Guns tracked them.

Cameras rolled.

John stopped at the steps.

"I'm John Knight," he said evenly.

"We're unarmed."

A pause.

"And my mother leaves untouched," he added.

"That's not a request."

Radios crackled.

Handcuffs clicked.

Cold metal.

As John was led away, he looked back once.

Ana was already moving.

Guiding his mother through the side exit.

Calm. Controlled. Gone.

John faced forward again.

His voice was low, certain.

"This isn't surrender," he said.

"It's containment."

The sirens rose.

And the Knights were taken into the night—

While Ana vanished into it,

carrying the one thing the enemy would never reach.
