The hospital waiting room smelled like antiseptic, bad coffee, and regret.
Mostly regret.
I sat there hunched over in the stiff plastic chair, my elbows resting on my knees while my brain replayed the accident over and over again like a cursed movie scene I couldn't pause.
The headlights.
The screeching tires.
Angel collapsing onto the pavement.
My heart twisted painfully just remembering it.
A nurse walked past me, and I immediately stood up like an anxious father waiting outside a delivery room.
"How is she?" I asked for what was probably the fifteenth time.
The nurse gave me a tired but reassuring smile.
"She's fine."
Fine.
The word nearly made my legs give out from relief.
Apparently, the car hadn't been driving fast. The driver had slammed the brakes almost immediately after Angel ran into the street like a woman trying to emotionally speedrun life.
Most of the injuries were minor.
Bruises.
Small cuts.
Shock.
