Chapter 92 - Chapter 92: [The Festival OF Masks ARC] The First Morning

Chapter 92 (Part 04)

The sun rose slowly over the festival grounds, as if it too was in no hurry to begin.

Golden light spilled across the rows of tents, the freshly painted tracks, and the flags of sixteen nations that snapped lazily in the warm morning breeze. The air smelled of grass, dust, and the faint sweetness of food stalls already preparing for the day.

Alok sat at a wooden table near the edge of the dining tent, a plate of rice and fish curry in front of him. He had not touched it yet. He was watching the crowd.

Students moved in clusters laughing, shouting, shoving each other playfully. Some wore their school uniforms with pride.

Others had already changed into training gear, eager to warm up before the day's matches.

Alok observed them all.

The way they walked. The way they held their shoulders.

The way their eyes darted to the champions from other schools, measuring, judging, fearing.

Everyone is watching everyone, he thought. And everyone is hiding something.

Rihan dropped onto the bench across from him, a plate piled high with food. He grinned, but the grin did not quite reach his eyes.

"You're doing it again."

Alok blinked. "Doing what?"

"Staring at people like you're reading their obituaries."

Alok did not smile. He picked up his fork and finally took a bite of the rice. It was cold. He did not mind.

"I'm just observing," he said.

Rihan leaned forward, lowering his voice. "Observing who? Tira's not here. I checked."

"I know."

"Then who?"

Alok's gaze drifted past Rihan, toward a table near the far end of the tent. A group of students in white and blue uniforms sat together, their laughter loud and easy.

At the center of the group sat a tall young man with ice-blue eyes and hair the color of winter frost.

Erik Coldsteel.

"Erik," Alok said quietly.

Rihan followed his gaze. "The Nordmark guy? The Combat champion?"

"Yes."

"Why him?"

Alok did not answer immediately. He watched Erik laugh at something one of his teammates said. It was a warm laugh, easy and genuine. But Alok noticed something else.

Erik's eyes did not laugh.

They remained cold. Distant. Searching.

"He's not here for the tournament," Alok said.

Rihan frowned. "What do you mean?"

Alok finally looked away. "He's looking for something. Or someone. I don't know yet. But I will."

Rihan stared at him for a moment, then shook his head. "You're getting paranoid, bro."

"Maybe." Alok took another bite. "But I'm usually right."

The morning passed slowly.

Alok walked through the festival grounds, his hands in his pockets, his steps unhurried. He passed the volleyball courts, where Sera Dawnfield was leading her team in a warm-up drill. Her movements were sharp, precise, and she shouted encouragement with a bright smile.

But Alok noticed her fingers. They were trembling.

She's hiding something, he thought. Pain, fear, or debt.

He passed the football field, where Kael Stormcrest was juggling a ball with effortless grace. The crowd around him cheered. He winked at them, confident and cocky.

But Alok saw the way Kael's eyes darted to the shadows between the bleachers. Searching. Watching.

He's afraid of something. Someone.

He passed the combat arena, where Viktor Ash was shadow boxing. His movements were explosive, powerful, and he snarled at every imaginary opponent. But Alok noticed the way he favored his left foot. A slight limp. An old injury he was hiding.

Ego, Alok thought. He will not admit weakness. I can use that.

Alok continued walking, his mind cataloging every detail, every weakness, every secret that others tried to hide.

This is not a tournament, he realized. This is a battlefield. And I am the only one who knows it.

At noon, Alok found himself near the KUA Girls' High School tent.

He had not planned to come here. His feet had simply carried him.

He stood at a distance, hidden behind a food stall, watching the silver and white uniforms of the Feilw Land students. They moved with practiced grace, their voices soft, their laughter controlled.

And there she was.

Ceya.

She sat with a group of girls, her face serene, her hands folded neatly in her lap. She was smiling at something one of them had said. It was a beautiful smile. Perfect.

But Alok saw the truth.

Her eyes were empty. Hollow. Like a doll's eyes.

His chest tightened.

Ceya.

He took a step forward.

And then she looked up.

Their eyes met across the crowded space.

For a single heartbeat, Alok saw a flicker of something in her gaze. Recognition. Pain. Desperation.

Then it vanished.

Her expression smoothed into polite indifference. She looked away, as if he were a stranger.

Alok stood frozen.

She saw me, he thought. She knows I'm here. But she can't show it. She's fighting. She's still in there.

He turned and walked away, his fists clenched at his sides.

I will save you, Ceya. I swear it.

The afternoon sun was harsh and unforgiving.

Alok sat alone on the bleachers, watching the first matches of the day. On the field below, students from Aerion and Mysthaven were competing in a volleyball match. The crowd cheered. The players shouted.

Alok did not see them.

He was replaying the moment in his mind. Ceya's eyes. The flicker of recognition. The cold mask that followed.

Lisa is still controlling her, he thought. But she's weakening. I can feel it. I need to find a way to break the hold.

He touched the pendant beneath his shirt. It was warm. Not hot, not cold. Warm, like a living thing.

Help me, he whispered silently. Guide me.

The pendant pulsed once. Softly.

Alok closed his eyes.

He did not know how long he sat there.

But when he opened his eyes, the sun was lower, and the shadows were longer.

Ravel was standing at the end of the bleacher, his hands shoved into his pockets, his shoulders slumped. He looked like a man who had been waiting for a long time.

"Alok," he said quietly.

Alok did not move. "What do you want?"

Ravel hesitated. Then he walked closer and sat down on the bench, leaving one empty seat between them.

"I saw you near the Feilw Land tent," Ravel said. "You were watching Ceya."

Alok said nothing.

"She's different now," Ravel continued. "I noticed it too. When she first arrived, she seemed... normal. But the past few days, something's changed. She's colder. Like she's not really there."

Alok finally turned to look at him. "Why are you telling me this?"

Ravel met his gaze. "Because I owe you. And because I know what it's like to watch someone you care about slip away."

A long silence stretched between them.

Then Alok spoke, his voice flat. "What do you know about Tira?"

Ravel flinched. "I... I told you. She's working with someone. A woman. Older. From Feilw Land. She calls her 'Madam.'"

"Lady Vaelia Laison," Alok said.

Ravel blinked. "You know her?"

"I know of her." Alok stood. "And I know she's using Tira. And I know she's using this tournament to hide something."

Ravel rose as well, his expression anxious. "What are you going to do?"

Alok walked past him without answering.

But Ravel heard the whisper.

"Win."

POV SHIFT

In the shadows of an empty equipment shed, a figure watched.

Lady Vaelia Laison leaned against the wall, her arms crossed, her eyes cold. Her phone glowed in her hand.

[Message Received: He is watching the Feilw Land tent. He approached Ceya. She did not respond.]

Vaelia smiled.

Good. Let him watch. Let him try. He will fail, and he will break.

She typed a reply:

[Message Sent: Continue observation. Do not interfere. Let him come to us.]

She pocketed the phone and stepped out of the shed.

The sun was setting, painting the festival grounds in shades of orange and crimson. The first day of the tournament was over.

But the real game had only just begun.
