Chapter 30 – Bloodlines and Chains
The amphitheater still roared long after the duel ended, the crowd's voices shaking the stone walls of the inner corridors. But here, in the narrow rest chamber where the air smelled of sweat and charred stone, silence pressed heavier than steel.
Chen Yue sat cross-legged, sweat dripping from his chin, Voidfire still smoldering faintly around him. Ayara hovered near, her hands trembling as she mixed a poultice. Velira stood at the door, arms folded, her amber eyes sharp and watchful.
Every few breaths, the bond throbbed—an echo of fear, exhaustion, and something darker that Chen Yue couldn't untangle.
Ayara broke the silence first. "It wasn't just the corruption that nearly consumed you." Her voice shook, but her gaze didn't waver. "It was you. That rage… it wanted blood. Even mine."
Chen Yue looked up, his throat dry. "I didn't—"
"You didn't want it, but I felt it," Ayara whispered, tears threatening her eyes. "The bond doesn't lie."
Velira's voice cut like a blade. "She's right. And if you lose yourself to that flame again, you're not the only one who burns."
Her eyes locked with his, fierce and unyielding. "Do you understand, Chen Yue? If you fall, you drag us with you. I won't let that happen."
For a moment, no one breathed. The bond pulsed, heavy with raw truth.
Chen Yue lowered his gaze. "…Then I'll carry it differently. For all of us."
Ayara pressed her hand to his shoulder, warmth steadying him. Velira's silence was answer enough.
The Emissaries
The next morning, the peace shattered.
When the three of them entered the courtyard of the dueling grounds, a small procession awaited them—armored knights with obsidian crests, their banners bearing a crimson serpent entwined with a silver star.
At their head stood a tall man in dark robes, his hair the same deep red as Velira's, though streaked with gray. His eyes burned with aristocratic pride, his aura sharp as a blade.
"Velira Draemyr," he called, voice carrying like a war drum. "By order of the House, you are summoned. You will return to your father at once."
Gasps rippled through the spectators. Whispers followed: House Draemyr… the Serpent of the North…
Velira stiffened, her jaw tight. "Tell him I'm not his pawn."
The man sneered. "Your rebellion has gone too far. To consort with a foreigner—" his eyes flicked to Chen Yue with disdain "—a nameless flame with no bloodline, no standing—"
Chen Yue's aura flared instinctively, Voidfire sparking around him. The knights shifted uneasily.
Velira's voice cut through the tension, sharp and cold. "This 'nameless flame' saved me. Without him, you'd be dragging back a corpse."
The emissary's lip curled. "You shame your House with such words." He snapped his fingers, and the knights' hands went to their swords. "Return willingly, or we take you by force."
Ayara stepped forward, her staff glowing faintly with protective wards. "You won't touch her."
The emissary's gaze swept her, dismissive. "An elven stray. Pathetic."
Chen Yue rose, the weight of his flame pressing on the courtyard like a storm. "Try it," he said softly. "And see if your House still has an heir to boast of."
The Clash
The air exploded as the knights drew steel. Mana surged, cloaks whipping in the wind.
Chen Yue's flames leapt to life, silver-violet and hungry. Ayara chanted, green wards spiraling into a barrier. Velira unsheathed her twin curved blades, her aura a crimson gale.
The emissary raised his hand. "Seize them."
The first knight lunged—only to be engulfed in Chen Yue's Voidfire. His scream echoed as his armor melted, flame swallowing mana.
Ayara's wards shattered a barrage of spears, her breath ragged as she poured strength into the barrier.
Velira danced forward, her blades a blur, cutting through a knight's armor like silk. Blood sprayed across the courtyard stones.
But the emissary didn't move. He only watched, cold satisfaction in his gaze, as if measuring prey.
The Emissary's Power
Finally, he raised his hand. Crimson chains of energy burst from his palm, coiling through the air like serpents. They snapped around Velira's blades, yanking them from her grip.
She snarled, struggling against the chains. "Damn you!"
The emissary's voice rang clear. "Do you think you've escaped your blood? You are Draemyr. And Draemyr blood bows to no one but the House."
The chains tightened around her wrists, searing into her skin. She fell to her knees with a cry.
Ayara screamed her name, rushing forward—but a blast of red energy hurled her back, slamming her against the courtyard wall.
Chen Yue's fury ignited.
Voidfire Unleashed
The Triad Flow pulsed, the bond flooding with Ayara's pain and Velira's defiance. The Chaos Meridian throbbed, demanding release.
Chen Yue stepped forward, Voidfire swirling like a storm around his body. His voice shook the stones themselves.
"You talk about bloodlines. Houses. Chains."
He clenched his fists, the flames wrapping tighter, hotter.
"But I've burned chains before. I'll burn yours too."
The emissary smirked. "Show me, Nameless."
Chen Yue roared, Voidfire erupting in a tidal wave. The crimson chains shattered under the silver-violet storm, the courtyard engulfed in blinding light.
Knights screamed as their armor dissolved, their mana cores collapsing under the devouring flame.
Velira's bonds crumbled to ash. She staggered to her feet, her eyes wide as she felt Chen Yue's power flood the bond—wild, uncontrollable, terrifying.
The emissary alone stood firm, his crimson aura shielding him. His smirk twisted into something darker. "So. This is the ancient flame."
Aftermath
When the light finally faded, the courtyard lay in ruins. Blackened stone smoked, armored bodies groaned in defeat.
The emissary brushed ash from his robes, his expression unreadable.
"You are more dangerous than we imagined," he said quietly. His gaze shifted to Velira. "Your father will want to see this for himself."
With a final gesture, he vanished in a swirl of crimson light, the remaining knights retreating in silence.
The crowd's whispers rose like wildfire: Ancient flame… nameless cultivator… House Draemyr involved…
Ayara staggered to her feet, clutching her ribs. Velira stood trembling, her blades slick with blood, her wrists still scorched from the chains.
Chen Yue's flames flickered and died, his knees nearly giving out. Ayara caught him, her tears hot on his shoulder. "You can't keep burning yourself like this."
Velira's voice cracked. "He'll come again. Stronger. My father… he won't stop until I'm caged."
Chen Yue met her eyes, his own still glowing faintly with violet fire.
"Then let him come," he said. "Because we're not bowing to chains. Not yours. Not mine. Not anyone's."
