Chapter 43 – Blood Between Kin, Ash Before Crowds
The volcanic heart of Emberhold pulsed with anticipation. Tomorrow, the Trial of Flame would be held in the grand coliseum, its blackstone walls carved from molten rock itself. But on the eve of battle, another confrontation stirred in the shadows.
Velira's Confrontation
Velira slipped through Emberhold's lower corridors, the flickering light of molten streams glinting off her crimson blade. She moved like a shadow, but her destination was clear—the command barracks.
Kaelen stood at the center of the training hall, armor half-fastened, fire coiling around his fists. When he noticed her, his mouth twisted into a cruel smile.
"Well," he said mockingly, "the stray returns. Couldn't resist watching me forge history tomorrow?"
Velira's hand gripped her hilt tightly. "History? You mean slaughter. You'll turn this city into chains and call it destiny."
Kaelen's smirk vanished. He stepped forward, his presence heavy as heat shimmered in the air. "Don't lecture me, sister. You walked away when the council chose me. You abandoned Emberhold."
"I left because you sold its soul!" Velira snapped, crimson fire leaking from her blade. "You weren't chosen—you twisted them to kneel!"
For a moment, the siblings faced each other, fire crackling between them.
Kaelen's voice dropped, almost tender. "We could still rule together. If you kneel at my side, I'll forgive your betrayal. That outsider doesn't matter—he'll burn tomorrow."
Velira's laugh was bitter, sharp. "You still don't understand. I'd rather bleed beside him than bow to you."
Her words landed like a blade. Kaelen's jaw tightened, and fire roared around him. But instead of striking, he turned away with a snarl.
"Then you'll burn with him. Tomorrow, I'll prove Emberhold needs only one flame."
Velira sheathed her blade slowly, eyes narrowing. She whispered into the shadows as she left: "Then tomorrow, I'll make sure Yue cuts you down."
Dawn Over Emberhold
The following morning, Emberhold roared with life. Tens of thousands surged toward the coliseum, their cheers and jeers filling the smoky sky. Banners of crimson flame rippled, and vendors hawked roasted meats and spiced drinks. The trial was more than combat—it was a festival of blood.
Chen Yue, Ayara, and Velira walked through the guarded tunnel leading into the arena.
Ayara clutched Chen Yue's arm, her sapphire eyes wide. "So many… they're all here for this?"
Velira snorted. "Half of them want to see you win. The other half want to see you bleed. Welcome to Emberhold."
Chen Yue's gaze hardened. "Then I'll give them a show they'll never forget."
Through the bond, both Ayara and Velira felt his resolve—unyielding, burning.
The Arena Revealed
The group stepped into sunlight, and the coliseum exploded with sound.
The arena stretched like a sea of blackstone, ringed by molten rivers flowing beneath iron grates. The stands were filled to bursting, nobles in crimson robes seated above, commoners packed shoulder to shoulder below.
At the center loomed a circular dais, carved with ancient flame runes that glowed faintly—an ancient stage of battle.
Drums thundered, and a voice boomed across the coliseum:
"Today, by decree of the Emberhold Council, the Trial of Flame shall decide the worth of the outsider Chen Yue! By combat against Commander Kaelen, let the Relic's choice be proven—or broken!"
The crowd roared, stamping their feet, chanting names.
"Kaelen! Kaelen!"
"Yue! Yue!"
"Burn the outsider!"
"Show us the ancient flame!"
Ayara trembled at the noise, her azure flame flickering in response. Chen Yue squeezed her hand. "Breathe. Focus on me."
She nodded, steadying herself.
Velira's jaw tightened as her eyes scanned the arena. She leaned closer to Chen Yue, muttering so only he could hear: "He's waiting for you to unleash the Embryo. Don't give him that satisfaction."
Nyxara's Whisper
And then—amid the noise, Chen Yue heard it.
Beautiful, isn't it?
He stiffened. Nyxara's voice, clear as silk, slid into his mind though she was nowhere in sight.
All these souls, screaming for blood. This is the perfect stage. If you let the Embryo loose, they'll see true power. You'll be more than a champion—you'll be a god.
Chen Yue gritted his teeth. Shut up.
But you're tempted, she purred. Because you know the truth—the Embryo doesn't want Kaelen. It wants her. Ayara's flame feeds it. Every bond tightens the leash… or sharpens the knife.
The System flickered faintly in his mind:
[System Notice: Trial engaged.]
[Warning: User resonance unstable.]
[Choice pending: Suppress Embryo (power limited) / Unleash Embryo (risk catastrophic bond collapse).]
His heart pounded. Suppress… or unleash?
He glanced at Ayara, her azure flame steadying as she looked at him with trust, and at Velira, who stood like a shield at his side.
Not yet, he told the System. Not for them.
The Commander Arrives
A horn sounded.
Kaelen strode into the arena from the opposite tunnel, clad in blacksteel armor streaked with molten veins. His crimson flame boiled around him, scorching the very sand.
The crowd erupted in wild cheers, his name a thunderclap.
He raised his blade high, flames spiraling into the sky. "Emberhold! Today I cut down a liar, a thief, a foreign parasite! And when I do, I will prove once and for all that only Kaelen's flame deserves to rule!"
The stands shook with fury and adoration.
Velira spat into the sand. "Arrogant bastard."
Chen Yue stepped forward, violet-golden fire unfurling from his back like wings. His voice rang clear, not with Kaelen's arrogance, but with calm conviction.
"I am no thief. I am no parasite. I am Chen Yue, cultivator of ancient flame. And today, I won't burn for Emberhold—I'll make Emberhold rise."
The crowd erupted again, split between fury and awe.
The Trial Begins
Drums boomed. The Grandmaster raised his hand from the highest seat.
"Let the Trial of Flame… begin!"
Kaelen's blade blazed. Chen Yue's flame surged.
The coliseum trembled as two fires prepared to collide—one born of ambition, the other of a reborn world.
And in the shadows of the stands, Nyxara smiled, her golden serpent eyes gleaming.
