Chapter 20 - Chapter 20

Wolverine Jump Recharge Technology

One of the major advances developed from Artemis Facility research and subsequent Wolverine engineering projects was the High-Efficiency Jump Recharge System.

These systems are installed aboard Wolverine JumpShips and function as dedicated recharge stations tied directly into the vessel's power and capacitor network.

Advantages:

* Recharge times measured in hours rather than days

* Multiple jumps can be stored before a full recharge cycle is required

* Reduced strain on jump cores

* Faster operational tempo

* Greatly increased strategic mobility

Operational Impact

This is one of the reasons Operation Snatcher was possible.

A normal force attempting the same operation would have spent:

* Weeks repositioning

* Additional weeks waiting for recharge cycles

* Significant downtime between targets

The 1st Wolverine Strike Cluster instead maintained a nearly continuous advance.

Systems fell in rapid succession because the fleet could:

1. Jump.

2. Conduct operations.

3. Recharge quickly.

4. Jump again.

The enemy simply had no time to coordinate a meaningful response.

Revised Campaign Length

If a standard BattleTech force might require:

2–4 months

to conduct the same campaign,

the Wolverines completed it in approximately:

28 days

including:

* Assembly

* Travel

* Combat operations

* Population transfers

* Asset seizures

* Return voyage

Strategic Consequences

This technology is arguably more valuable than many of the Wolverines' weapons.

Why?

Because it allows them to choose:

* When to fight

* Where to fight

* How long to remain

Most enemies cannot react quickly enough.

By the time intelligence reaches a neighboring system that a world has been attacked, the Wolverines may already be attacking the next one.

Which is exactly what happened during Operation Snatcher.

The Marian Hegemony wasn't facing a slow-moving invasion force.

It was facing a raiding force that moved at a pace their military doctrine was never designed to counter. That speed is a large part of why six systems were struck in less than a month and why Pompey III received so little warning before Wolverine forces appeared in orbit.

P19 — Market Square

Third Person POV

The marketplace was bustling with activity. Merchants, clerks, and salesmen went about their daily business, earning their livelihoods through the goods and services they provided. Every stall was different from the last, though many sold similar products with their own unique twists.

Even the recently opened toy store was doing excellent business as children crowded around its displays. While the younger generation played with their toys, the adults held conversations of their own, exchanging news and quiet whispers.

The fleet had recently returned.

Many people were eager to see loved ones who had departed with the Strike Cluster. Some were reunited with family members and friends, while others were not so fortunate. More than a few broke down in tears as they received the bodies of warriors who had given their lives during the operation. The fallen were returned to their families so they could be laid to rest with proper honors.

Amidst the crowds, two individuals sat quietly on a park bench.

There was nothing remarkable about them.

One was a beautiful blonde woman dressed in the fashionable style common throughout Wolverine society. The other was an average-looking man with dark hair. Dirt and mud covered parts of his clothing, and several farming tools hung from his belt, making him appear no different from any other agricultural worker.

Luna: What a lovely day we're having, don't you agree?

Max: Yeah.

Luna rolled her eyes.

Luna: You're always such a bore. Nothing exciting ever comes out of your mouth. Anyway, do you have what I need?

Without responding immediately, Max reached into one of his pockets and placed a small black box into her hand. It was compact enough to be concealed entirely within a closed fist.

Max: Yeah, I got it. If there's nothing else, I've got a date to get to.

Luna raised an eyebrow.

Luna: Oh? A date? Has some young lady finally caught your eye?

Max: A technician named Sha. We've been seeing each other for a while. She just got back with the fleet.

Luna smirked.

Luna: Well, congratulations.

Max simply shrugged.

Max: I'll get you more information when I have it.

Realizing she wasn't going to get anything more out of him, Luna let the matter drop. Max stood from the bench and disappeared into the crowd.

Luna remained seated for nearly an hour afterward, watching the flow of people through the square. Only when she was certain she wasn't being observed did she finally rise and make her way back toward her establishment.

The small black box never left her pocket.

Aboard a shuttle descending toward P19

The shuttle vibrated slightly as it entered the upper atmosphere, its engines humming steadily while dozens of warriors occupied the passenger compartment. Most were asleep, talking quietly amongst themselves, or simply staring at the walls as they waited for the trip to end.

Near the rear of the shuttle sat three familiar young women.

For once, none of them were arguing.

The last month had left its mark on all three of them.

Azula sat with her arms crossed, her expression neutral as she stared through one of the small viewports. Tanya occupied the seat beside her, reviewing casualty reports on her Omni-tool. Across from them sat Zelary, who looked significantly more exhausted than either of her sisters.

Silence lingered between them for several moments before Zelary finally broke it.

Zelary: I didn't think war would be like that.

Tanya lowered her Omni-tool.

Tanya: Which part?

Zelary: All of it.

The pink-haired young woman leaned back in her seat and sighed.

Zelary: The training simulations never showed any of that. People screaming. Buildings collapsing. Families crying. Soldiers surrendering because they were terrified. I knew those things happened, but… seeing them is different.

Neither Tanya nor Azula immediately answered.

The three of them had seen plenty during Operation Snatcher.

More than enough.

Azula eventually snorted.

Azula: War isn't supposed to be pleasant.

Zelary: I know that.

Azula: Then why are you surprised?

Zelary: Because I didn't think I would feel bad about it.

That answer caused even Azula to pause.

For a moment, none of them spoke.

Tanya eventually folded her Omni-tool closed.

Tanya: I understand what she means.

Azula raised an eyebrow.

Tanya: We spent our entire lives preparing for battle. We studied tactics, logistics, strategy, and combat theory. We were told people would die. We knew that. Understanding something and witnessing it are very different things.

The blonde young woman rubbed her forehead.

Tanya: Those military prisoners we loaded onto the transports… some of them looked terrified.

Azula: They lost.

Tanya: That's not the point.

Azula: It is the point.

The red-haired warrior leaned forward.

Azula: If we had failed, then we would have been the ones loaded onto transports. We would have been the ones losing our homes. That's reality.

Zelary frowned.

Zelary: Father wouldn't do that.

Azula: Maybe not. The Hegemony would.

That immediately ended the argument.

Unfortunately, Azula wasn't wrong.

The Hegemony was not known for kindness.

Eventually Tanya shifted the conversation.

Tanya: What did you think about the battle suits?

Immediately all three girls groaned.

Azula: I hate them.

Zelary: I hate them.

Tanya: I also hate them.

For the first time in several minutes all three sisters agreed on something.

Azula looked genuinely offended.

Azula: We are warriors. We belong in mechs.

Tanya: Agreed.

Zelary: Agreed.

Azula: Instead we're stuck inside walking metal boxes because somebody thought it would be funny to crawl through ventilation ducts.

All three girls slowly turned toward Zelary.

Zelary immediately pointed at Azula.

Zelary: It wasn't my idea!

Azula pointed right back.

Azula: You were the one who wanted to explore!

Zelary: You agreed!

Azula: You suggested it!

Tanya groaned.

Tanya: Both of you are idiots.

The argument continued for another minute before eventually dying out.

Despite all their complaints, however, none of them could deny the battle suits had performed well.

Very well.

Tanya sighed.

Tanya: I still think Father planned this.

Azula: Planned what?

Tanya: Our punishment.

Azula stared at her.

Tanya stared back.

Slowly realization began creeping across all three sisters' faces.

Zelary: Oh no.

Azula: No.

Tanya: Yes.

The blonde cadet folded her arms.

Tanya: Think about it. We embarrass ourselves. We get caught. We get assigned to battle suits instead of mechs. Then we get deployed into an actual combat operation where we're forced to rely on teamwork just to survive.

Silence.

Tanya: Does that sound familiar?

Azula's eye twitched.

Zelary looked horrified.

Because it sounded exactly like the lesson he had tried teaching them on the moon.

Azula groaned.

Azula: He set us up.

Zelary: Dad set us up.

Tanya: Father absolutely set us up.

The three sisters simultaneously slumped into their seats.

Far above them, completely unaware of the accusations being directed at him, Silas was likely enjoying his day.

Zelary sighed.

Zelary: I hate it when he's smarter than us.

Azula: I hate it when Tanya is right.

Tanya smiled smugly.

Tanya: That's because I'm usually right.

The shuttle continued its descent toward P19 while the three sisters continued arguing amongst themselves.

For the first time since Operation Snatcher had begun, however, the argument felt normal.

And that was comforting.

P19 — Mobile Suit Maintenance Hangar

Third Person POV

The massive maintenance hangar echoed with the sounds of industry.

Welding torches flared as technicians worked atop scaffolding surrounding a battered Zaku Warrior. Maintenance drones floated overhead carrying replacement armor plates while cranes slowly maneuvered fresh equipment into place. Sparks rained down from above as engineers removed a damaged shoulder assembly, replacing it with one that had only recently come off the production line.

Despite having returned from Operation Snatcher only hours ago, there was no rest for either machine or crew.

The Wolverine military had already begun preparing for whatever came next.

The cockpit hatch of the Zaku Warrior hissed open.

A young man climbed out, removing his helmet as he descended the maintenance lift. His black hair was damp with sweat, and while there were bags beneath his eyes from weeks of combat operations, his expression remained composed.

Suzaku Kururugi stretched his sore shoulders before stepping onto the hangar floor.

Suzaku: They found every way imaginable to scratch up my machine…

Before he could take another step, a familiar voice called out from behind him.

Dorothea: Well, well…

Suzaku froze.

He knew that voice.

Turning around slowly, he found a woman leaning casually against a toolbox with her arms folded across her chest. Her silver hair framed an expression that could only be described as thoroughly amused.

Dorothea Ernst.

Even in another life…

She still enjoyed giving him a hard time.

Dorothea: You survived. I'm honestly a little disappointed.

Suzaku sighed.

Suzaku: Hello, Dorothea.

Dorothea pushed herself away from the toolbox.

Dorothea: Is that all? No dramatic reunion? No speech about justice? No apology for making everyone's life miserable in our last life?

Suzaku pinched the bridge of his nose.

Suzaku: We've had this conversation at least twelve times.

Dorothea: And I'll happily make it thirteen.

Suzaku looked around the hangar, hoping somebody would rescue him.

Unfortunately…

Nobody seemed interested.

Suzaku: We've both been dead for decades.

Dorothea: Doesn't mean I'm letting you forget.

Suzaku: I was hoping reincarnation would.

Dorothea laughed.

Dorothea: Not a chance.

Another voice suddenly joined the conversation.

Nonette: He's right, you know.

The pair looked over to see another woman approaching, carrying a maintenance clipboard beneath one arm.

Nonette Enneagram.

Unlike Dorothea, Nonette's expression carried far more amusement than hostility.

She stopped beside the two of them and looked Suzaku up and down.

Nonette: You look terrible.

Suzaku deadpanned.

Suzaku: Thank you.

Nonette: You're welcome.

Dorothea smirked.

Dorothea: He does look awful.

Suzaku: I just spent nearly a month in combat.

Dorothea: Excuses.

Suzaku let out a defeated sigh.

Suzaku: I forgot how impossible you two are together.

Nonette smiled.

Nonette: We prefer "efficient."

Dorothea nodded.

Dorothea: Besides, it's fun watching you squirm.

Suzaku couldn't help smiling despite himself.

It was strange.

In another life they had served different ideals, fought different battles, and carried burdens that no longer existed.

Now…

They were simply fellow warriors.

Members of Clan Wolverine.

Pilots.

Newtypes.

For the first time in either of their lives…

They fought because they chose to.

Not because someone else demanded it.

Dorothea's expression softened slightly.

Dorothea: So…

How was your first real war?

Suzaku looked back toward his battered Zaku Warrior.

His smile slowly disappeared.

Suzaku: Nothing like the simulations.

Silence settled over the three former Knights.

All of them had seen enough death over the past month to understand exactly what he meant.

The three of them stood quietly as technicians continued repairing the Zaku Warrior behind them, the sounds of welding and machinery filling the hangar while preparations for the Clan's next campaign had already begun.
