Chapter 62 - DTC - Chapter 62

The Price of Survival

The forest held its breath.

Seventeen survivors stood in a broken clearing, surrounded by shattered stone, burning fragments of crystal, and the remains of those who had fallen.

Across from them—

The Hunter.

Wounded.

But not weakened.

Not truly.

Black blood dripped from the fracture in its chest, steaming as it touched the ground. The second layer of its body pulsed faintly, adapting again, closing gaps, shifting density.

Ayush's voice was low.

"It's not dying."

Vedant wiped blood from his lip.

"Then we kill it harder."

Gudi didn't smile this time.

"No," she said quietly.

"We kill it smarter."

Raghu said nothing.

The sword at his side pulsed slowly.

The fragment inside it was no longer quiet.

It was awake.

Final Evolution

The Hunter exhaled.

The mist froze.

Not metaphorically.

Actually froze.

A wave of frost spread outward from its body, coating the ground, the trees, the air itself in a thin crystalline layer.

Ayush's eyes widened.

"Final phase."

The crystal plates along the Hunter's body dissolved.

Not falling away.

Integrating.

Its entire form became sharper, thinner, faster.

The six eyes merged into two.

Focused.

Deadly.

The Hunter lowered its body.

Ready to strike.

The Plan

Ayush stepped forward.

"Listen carefully," he said.

No one argued.

"We have one chance."

He pointed toward the wound in the Hunter's chest.

"That fracture is still the only viable kill point."

Vedant nodded.

"Same combo."

"No," Ayush said.

"Stronger."

He turned to Raghu.

"You anchor it."

Raghu met his gaze.

"I can't hold it for long."

"You don't need to."

Ayush's voice hardened.

"Just long enough."

Gudi stepped forward.

"I'll lock its movement."

Den Olo cracked his neck.

"I'll take the impact."

Mira stepped closer.

"I'll stabilize the field."

Raghu turned to her.

"You don't have to—"

"I do," she said quietly.

Her voice didn't shake this time.

"I won't be the reason we fail."

Something in that sentence settled heavily.

Raghu didn't argue.

The Hunter moved with intent and speed faster than before.

A blur of frost and crystal tore across the clearing.

Den Olo stepped forward.

"COME ON!"

The creature collided with him like a collapsing mountain.

The impact shattered the ground beneath them.

Den Olo held for one second.

Then two.

Then he was thrown backward, body slamming into the forest.

Alive.

Barely.

"NOW!" Ayush shouted.

Gudi's Bubble Matrix expanded instantly.

Dozens of overlapping spheres locked around the Hunter's limbs, distorting space, slowing its movement by fractions.

Not enough to stop it.

Enough to delay it.

Vedant unleashed everything.

Flames roared brighter than before, compressing into a focused inferno that wrapped around the Hunter's body.

The frost began to melt.

The crystal surface cracked.

Ayush raised his hand.

The Erosion Beam formed.

This time—

It wasn't precise.

It was overwhelming.

"RAGHU!"

The Anchor

Raghu stepped forward.

The Verdant Pulse surged.

Stronger than ever before.

The ground responded.

Not just shifting—

Aligning.

The entire battlefield bent subtly toward the Hunter's position.

Its movement slowed.

Not stopped.

Forced into a predictable path.

The sword pulsed violently.

The fragment resonated.

The external signal answered.

For a brief second—

Everything aligned.

Mira

The Hunter broke through the bubble field.

Faster than expected.

Stronger than calculated.

It lunged.

Not toward Raghu.

Toward Ayush.

Mira saw it first.

Her body moved before her mind could.

"No!"

She stepped between them.

The Hunter's claw struck.

Time slowed.

The impact didn't explode.

It pierced.

Clean.

Precise.

The crystal claw drove through her chest.

Silence fell.

Raghu's pulse faltered.

The Verdant flow flickered.

The Hunter tried to pull back—

But Mira didn't move.

Her hands locked around the creature's limb.

Blood spilled down her arms.

Her voice trembled—

But didn't break.

"NOW."

Ayush didn't hesitate.

The Erosion Beam fired point-blank into the fracture.

Vedant's flames surged simultaneously.

Gudi reinforced the lock.

Raghu forced the alignment back into place.

The Hunter screamed.

Not like before.

This time—

It was dying.

The fracture split open.

Light burst from within the creature's core.

The entire body shattered.

Crystal plates exploded outward.

The forest shook violently.

Then—

Silence.

The Hunter collapsed.

Dead.

The Halo Watches chimed and confirmed.

HUNTER ELIMINATED

GATE FOUR — COMPLETE

The survivors stood frozen.

No one celebrated.

No one moved.

Because Mira was still standing.

For a moment.

Then her grip loosened.

The Hunter's limb slipped free.

She collapsed.

Raghu caught her before she hit the ground.

Her breathing was shallow.

Fading.

"You stabilized it," Raghu said quietly.

She smiled faintly.

"Guess… I wasn't the weakest."

"No," he said.

"You weren't."

Her eyes shifted slightly.

Past him.

Toward the sky.

"They'll be… angry," she whispered.

Ayush stepped closer.

"Who?"

Mira didn't answer.

Her hand tightened briefly.

Then stilled.

The Halo Watch dimmed.

CANDIDATES REMAINING: 16 → 15 → 14 → 13 → 12 → 11 → 10

The count stabilized.

Ten survivors.

Silence consumed the forest.

The Ancient

The Ancient stepped forward slowly.

His expression was calm.

But his eyes lingered on Mira's body.

"Interesting," he said softly.

He looked at Raghu.

"You've begun to understand the cost."

Raghu didn't respond.

The sword at his side was quiet again.

But heavier.

The avian appeared beside the Ancient.

"Ten remain," it said.

The Ancient nodded.

"Enough."

He turned toward the survivors.

"You may proceed."

The forest began to dissolve.

The gate was closing.

But something else remained.

The weight of Mira's last words.

They'll be angry.
