Chapter 282 - Night Watch

Ten minutes later, the bathroom door opened with a soft click, releasing a cloud of warm, clean-smelling steam into the bedroom.

Makoto and Ayane wrapped themselves in simple sleepwear as they exited the bathroom. He was in an old T-shirt, and she was in shorts and a tank top. The horny energy had subsided, replaced by deep, bone-weary satisfaction.

Makoto collapsed onto the bed with a contented sigh, and Ayane followed, letting him pull her down into his lap so she was resting against his chest. Her damp hair tickled his chin.

"How was Asuka lately? Did anyone tease her in the childcare class?" Makoto asked softly with concern.

Ayane was quiet for a moment, and then a rumbling chuckle started in her chest. "Teased? Honey, you're talking about Asuka. I think you mean, 'Did Asuka tease anyone in her childcare class?'"

She shifted, propping her chin on his chest so she could look at him. "The teachers called me last week. Apparently, a little boy named Shinjirou in her class took her favorite crayon, the red one. And Asuka… well," A proud smile spread across her face. "She organized a 'liberation front' with two other kids, and took back not just her crayon but their entire boxes."

Her expression softened, the playful pride melting into something deeper as she snuggled closer, her cheek resting over his heart. "Nobody teases our girl, boss. She's too much like her mother. She was a fighter, probably a little pervert like me. And she had a dad who worried about her."

"I'm a bit worried about the pervert part, but I will let it slide for now," Makoto pouted and hugged her back. "Maybe I should let Mafuyu teach them some adult stuff when they grow up. No, what if they turn out to be like her…" he murmured. "Maybe Mika can…"

Makoto bit his lip and sighed playfully. "God! Why isn't there any normal mom in this house?"

Ayane let out a full-bellied laugh that made the whole bed shake. "Oh my god, you're just figuring this out now, Makoto? Normal left the building the day your little stepsister decided to give you a happy ending." She poked him in the chest.

"Let's be real. You want Mafuyu to teach them? They'll be the sweetest, kindest little masochists on the playground, apologizing every time they skin their knee because it was their fault for being clumsy." Her grin turned more wicked.

"And Mika? You want Mika to teach them about the birds and the bees? Honey, by the time they're ten, they'll know how to emotionally manipulate their crushes and have a plan for a takeover of the student council."

Ayane flopped back down, her head landing on Makoto's chest with a soft thud. "And don't even get me started on Yuna. Their first word would be baka, and they'd think love is something you express by throwing a game controller at someone's head."

She fell silent for a moment, the only sound her soft breathing against his chest. Then she snuggled closer, her arm wrapping around his waist in a tight hug. "There aren't any normal moms in this house, you big idiot. Because you didn't fall in love with a normal girl. You fell in love with us."

"And you got exactly what you wanted. A tsundere queen, a yandere manager, a masochist angel, and a loud-mouthed pervert." She gave him a soft kiss on the chin. "Now shut up and go to sleep. We have a big day tomorrow."

"Yeah, that makes sense," he sighed and scratched her back. "Let's rest. I'll check on Mika later. She's been staying up quite late lately."

Ayane let out a contented hum. "Good, she tries too hard sometimes, and she thinks she has to manage the whole world… Tell her to come to bed early, or force her to!" Her breathing deepened, and within minutes, the loud-mouthed pervert who had dominated him just an hour ago was fast asleep in his arms, peaceful and trusting.

Makoto lay there for a while, just listening to the quiet rhythm of Ayane's breath, his own exhaustion settling over him like a heavy, comfortable weight. Carefully, so as not to wake her, he disentangled himself, sliding out from under her and gently pulling the covers over her shoulder.

Ayane stirred, murmuring something that sounded suspiciously like "My Asuka… so precious..." before settling back into deep sleep.

Makoto slipped out of the room, closing the door with a soft click. The house was quiet now, the only light a soft glow coming from the living room. He walked down the hallway; it was silent save for the faint hum of the refrigerator from the kitchen.

The light under Mika's door was a beacon in the darkness, but he bypassed it and headed for the back door. The cool night air was a welcome shock, clearing the last of the sleepy fog from his mind. He walked softly on the damp grass, the scent of night-blooming jasmine thick around him.

He circled around to her side of the house, where the window to her and Aiko's room glowed softly. He stayed in the shadow of a large rose bush, peering through the glass.

The scene inside was like a quiet portrait: Mika was sitting up in bed, propped against a mountain of white pillows. She was wearing an elegant silk nightgown, her hair down and cascading over her shoulders. In one hand, she held a tablet, its screen filled with what looked like a complex spreadsheet. Her brow was furrowed in concentration.

But cradled in her other arm, fast asleep with her head resting on Mika's chest, was Aiko. The little girl's tiny chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm, perfectly at peace. Even in the middle of late-night business planning, Mika was still a mother first.

As Makoto watched, Mika stopped scrolling. Her gaze drifted from the glowing screen down to the sleeping child in her arms. The focused line of her mouth softened. The calculating glint in her eyes melted away, replaced by an expression of tender love.

Mika leaned down and pressed a feather-light kiss to Aiko's forehead, her movements careful enough not to disturb the child. She stayed there for a moment, just breathing in the scent of her daughter, her face full of contentment.

This was the private Mika. The one that no business partner or rival ever saw. The manager and the loving mother, all in one quiet moment.

"So peaceful," Makoto murmured, lost in the scene as he kept watching from the window. He remained still, hidden in the shadows, not wanting to break it. It was a glimpse into the fiercely protective core of the woman who so often kept herself behind a wall of calm and control.

Then the moment of tenderness passed. Mika's expression shifted, the softness hardening back into her default state of focus as she carefully disentangled herself from the sleeping Aiko.

She lifted the child as if she weighed nothing and gently laid her down in the small toddler bed next to her own, tucking the unicorn-themed blanket around her small shoulders. She watched Aiko for another second, making sure she was still sound asleep, before returning to her own bed to pick up the tablet again.

Her thumb scrolled through the spreadsheet, then swiped to a different app, a calendar. Her lips curved into a small smile. If Makoto could view the details on the screen, he would have a detailed itinerary for the next day. "Anniversary Getaway."

It had everything planned, from the hotel check-in time to the dinner reservations to the blocks of time simply labeled "Private Session." She had even scheduled a sixty-minute buffer for "potential tsundere-related delays."

After a satisfied nod, Mika placed the tablet on her nightstand. With a soft click, the lamp went out. Mika's room plunged into darkness. Makoto was left standing alone in the cool night air, the image of that quietly loving mother still vivid in his mind.

As the light went out, he was about to leave, but then he noticed the window wasn't locked. "She wouldn't make that kind of mistake, no matter how tired she is… unless…" His mind raced, and he waited patiently for a short while.

After five minutes of silence, Makoto opened the window, its lid open with a whisper-soft shhh that seemed impossibly loud in the dead of night. In silence, he eased himself through until he was inside.

"Phew, seems like they're still 'asleep,' that's good," he thought as letting out a slow breath.

He held his breath, his heart hammering, expecting a lamp to flick on and a knowing smile to greet him.

But nothing happened. Makoto swung his leg over the sill, landing on the plush carpet with the stealth of a clumsy ninja. The room was dark, but his eyes had adjusted, and the moonlight filtering in painted everything in shades of silver. Aiko was a small lump under her unicorn blanket. Mika was a still, elegant silhouette in the large bed.

"You're getting better at that," a calm voice said from the bed, completely devoid of surprise. "You only made one sound this time. The 'phew.'"

Makoto's blood ran cold. He whipped his head around. Mika's silhouette hadn't moved. She was still lying perfectly still on her back, her hands resting at her sides. She hadn't even turned her head.

"I was wondering when you would decide to come in," she continued, her voice a soft murmur in the darkness.
