Chapter 2 - Tangled Threads

------Chapter 2-------

The training arena stretched wide beneath the morning sun.

Rows of targets gleamed in neat formation, rifles resting along the stands, and the faint metallic scent of gunpowder mingled with the tang of sweat.

Cadets moved through drills, some clashing wooden swords, others sprinting across obstacle courses, their footsteps echoing sharply against polished floors.

Enix adjusted the strap of his rifle case and set it down with methodical precision. He scanned the arena wind patterns, sunlight reflections, distances all details that could affect his aim.

Every sense worked in tandem, the world narrowing to target, stance, and timing. Memories flickered briefly his homeland in ruins, the war that orphaned him, and the mercenary training under his adoptive father.

Following Mr. Raven's guidance was more than duty; it was a promise he had made.

From the far end, a flash of pink caught his attention.

Azre Ashburn, one of the academy's upper-year cadets, moved with deliberate grace, bow in hand. Her arrows flew with silent precision, each striking its mark.

Her sharp eyes flicked to Enix as Mr. Raven and Mr. Greyhound passed nearby, a faint interest hidden beneath her poised demeanor.

Azre had always commanded attention without demanding it. Fierce eyes, a serious demeanor, and innate leadership made cadets think twice before challenging her.

To some, she radiated a "princess" aura composed, elegant, untouchable yet beneath it was a relentless competitor.

She had mastered fencing under a professional teacher, quickly surpassing every instructor, and firearms became another arena where she excelled, building her own target range, favoring light, stylish handguns.

Each skill honed was for herself, not her father's approval, not society's praise.

Watching Enix, her mind whirred. Calculated, precise, unyielding someone to watch, someone worth attention.

A spark of rivalry flickered, and curiosity sharpened like a blade.

"Oh, fancy meeting you here, Ms. Ashburn,"

Raven's voice carried across the arena, smooth and theatrical, every word measured for effect.

His gestures were broad, precise, almost like a conductor leading an orchestra.

Azre froze, then removed her earbuds with a flick of practiced composure.

"Good morning, Mr. Raven. Mr. Grey,"

she said crisply. Though she wasn't on duty, the unspoken authority in their presence demanded respect.

"You're practicing, Ms. Ashburn?"

Greyhound's calm, analytical gaze swept over her form.

"Yes, sir. Almost done,"

she replied, lowering her bow and stretching, the sunlight catching her hair in streaks of pink.

Enix shifted his attention back to his rifle. "What are the rules here?"

"Hit all ten,"

Greyhound answered simply, his voice carrying quiet authority.

The first shot rang out. Bullseye. The second, third, and every following shot struck the center with mechanical perfection ten consecutive rounds, flawless precision.

Azre, stepping away, froze mid-stride. The reports were crisp, deliberate, and perfectly timed.

The targets were obliterated. Her sharp eyes narrowed. A rival had arrived. Finally, someone who demanded her attention.

Above the arena, Amu rested on a sturdy branch like a cat surveying its domain. Tail curling around the trunk, his eyes half-lidded but fully aware.

Every movement below the cadence of rifle shots, the subtle motions of cadets, even the sunlight catching Enix's hair was cataloged meticulously.

From a shaded corner near the benches, another figure observed silently. Hood drawn, one eye visible, posture relaxed yet alert Rubal.

Known as the youngest sniper in Novarra, he had earned recognition for deadly precision and uncanny perception.

Raised in a remote village, his senses hearing, touch, even smell were far beyond ordinary.

Peace was his preference, but the rhythm of rifle shots drew him in. A calm curiosity, tempered by instinct, evaluated every detail of Enix's form and timing.

The training session ended, and murmurs of cadets moved through the arena.

Whispers trailed behind Enix as he walked past, some shaking their heads in awe, others exchanging quiet speculation about the new cadet's abilities.

Another prodigy… but who is he really?

Enix slung his rifle case over his shoulder and moved toward the tree across the courtyard. Warm sunlight shifted to dappled shadows under the branches.

A gentle breeze stirred the leaves, carrying faint cadet chatter and the scent of fresh-cut grass.

Each step was measured, his mind quietly analyzing every detail the perfect angles of the tree, the pathways to navigate, the sound of distant voices.

As he neared, he spotted a hooded figure on a bench beneath the shade. One eye barely visible beneath dark strands of hair Rubal.

Calm, detached, yet alert. Their gazes met a silent acknowledgment of awareness and potential.

Above them, Amu flicked his tail lazily from his perch, half-asleep but fully aware of the silent tension below.

The courtyard seemed to shrink around the two geniuses, each studying the other as naturally as the wind stirred the leaves above.

Nearby, cadets whispered, some stopping to watch. A passing student almost tripped over a backpack, only to be steadied by Brooke, who caught the loaf of bread falling from her mouth mid-step.

Her chaotic energy contrasted with the measured focus of Enix and Rubal, adding an unpredictable rhythm to the quiet scene.

Mr. Raven lingered a short distance away, mask hiding a subtle smirk.

Observing quietly, his theatrical movements and gestures remained deliberate measuring reactions, cataloging abilities, and plotting his staged challenges.

Greyhound followed him briefly, then was called to the office by a cadet. "Sir, you've been summoned. Urgent."

"Very well,"

Greyhound replied, nodding, then moved swiftly away, leaving Enix walking alone toward the tree.

The courtyard seemed to hold its breath as Enix reached the shade.

Meanwhile, In a dark, sealed room deep beneath the academy, monitors flickered to life.

Mr. Raven stood before a massive bank of screens, each one displaying different angles: the arena, training rooms, courtyards, corridors, and hidden corners.

Six prodigies moved across the campus, unaware they were being watched in real time.

A gloved hand traced the edge of a screen, eyes glinting behind the mask. The faint hum of electronics filled the room, punctuated by the rhythmic blinking of red camera indicators.

"Let the party begin," Mr. Raven whispered, his voice carrying a theatrical, almost sinister elegance.

From the shadows, the plan was already in motion. Every movement, every reaction, every step of the prodigies was now a piece on his board.

The academy, for all its sunlight and polish, had become a stage—and the audience of one was ready to watch the game unfold.
