Chapter 184 - Chapter 184

The agents advanced with a chilling, synchronized precision, moving like a single, predatory organism. Renamon spun, unleashing a flurry of golden leaves with her Diamond Storm, slicing through two of their energy rifles. The weapons cracked and fizzed, sparking on the ground. Three more agents immediately stepped into their places, their own weapons already aimed. They didn't miss a beat. Jewel flipped one of the agents over her shoulder, a flash of white and blue, and his helmet clanged against the pavement. Her gloved hand sparked against the agent's armor as she did it.

"Don't let them regroup!" a man's voice barked from somewhere behind the main line, cold and sharp. I couldn't see him, but his authority was clear. These weren't just random thugs; this was a coordinated attack.

My grip on Impmon tightened, my knuckles white. He whimpered, pressing himself closer to my chest. Renamon moved with a dancer's grace, deflecting another agent's strike with a powerful Power Paw. The agent stumbled back, his arm spasming. Jewel followed up, delivering a sharp kick that sent him crashing into a tree. We were holding our own, but the pressure was suffocating. Every move we made, they countered. Every agent taken down, another seemed to replace them. It felt like trying to fight an endless tide.

I clutched Impmon tighter, my heart pounding against my ribs. My Digi-Camo shimmered around me, distorting the light, but it offered little comfort against the barrage of stun rounds. They whizzed past my ears with an electric CRACKLE, some glancing off the camo with dull THUDS.

"Proxy, get back!" Jewel shouted, her voice strained, but where could I go?

There was no way out. Renamon was a blur of motion, her golden fur flashing as she weaved through the concentrated fire. She moved with impossible speed, deflecting rounds, but her breaths came in ragged gasps. I could feel her exhaustion, a dull ache in my chest that mirrored her struggle. My Digivice buzzed with her stats, a red flicker warning of draining stamina. Every dodge, every counter-attack, cost her. I watched, helpless, as she strained against the relentless assault, her usual elegant movements becoming more desperate, more raw. It killed me to see her like that, pushing herself past her limits because I was too weak to help.

THUNK.

A grenade rolled across the asphalt, pulsing with a sickly violet light. It stopped inches from Jewel's boot. Renamon, despite her obvious fatigue, snapped into action. She lashed out with a glowing Power Paw, sending the grenade rocketing skyward.

BOOM.

The explosion ripped through the air above us, the concussive force rattling my teeth and sending a jolt through my entire body. I stumbled, nearly dropping Impmon. A man's voice, the same one that had barked orders earlier, chuckled from behind the advancing agents.

"Smart girl," he said, his tone dry, almost appreciative. I still couldn't see him clearly, only the dark silhouette of his body. "But not smart enough."

He gestured, and the agents shifted, splitting into two precise groups. They moved like a well-oiled machine, cutting off our escape routes, forcing us backward until our backs were pressed against a rough concrete wall. The light glinted off their rifles, a dozen red dots appearing on Renamon, Jewel, and then me.

"It's over, ladies," the voice drawled. "Give up the little devil, and nobody else gets hurt."

CRACK.

My right shoulder exploded in a blinding flash of white-hot pain. The Digi-Camo held, distorting the bullet's impact, but the force slammed me into the ground. My head hit the asphalt with a sickening THWACK. Impmon tumbled from my arms, landing with a startled squeak, then scrambling behind a nearby trash bin, a small purple blur of terror.

PING. PING. PING.

Three more shots. Renamon, already moving, threw herself over my body. She took the rounds meant for my head, her golden fur rippling as the impacts shook her. A pained yelp escaped her, low and guttural. My vision swam. The concrete felt cold and gritty against my cheek. I could feel the throb in my shoulder, a deep, burning ache that spread through my arm. It was my first time getting shot. It was so much worse than I ever imagined. Renamon lay over me, unmoving for a second, her body twitching. I tried to push myself up, but the pain was too much.

I struggled to move, my shoulder screaming in protest. Renamon still lay over me, her small body trembling with effort. I heard a low, guttural growl vibrating through her chest, a sound I had never heard from her before. She was protecting me.

Then I saw him. He moved from the edge of the rooftop, a dark shadow detaching itself from the deeper night. He was tall, dressed in dark, tactical gear, but it was his arm that caught my eye. It was made of metal, a gleaming silver, with a red star emblazoned on the shoulder. He moved with a terrifying precision, too smooth, too quiet for any human. It was like watching a perfectly calibrated machine, not a person. My blood ran cold, a wave of sheer dread washing over me. He wasn't just an agent; he was something else entirely, something deeply wrong. His eyes, even from a distance, seemed hollow, like a doll's, devoid of any light. This wasn't just a fight anymore; this was something much darker, much more dangerous than I had ever imagined.

This person, this thing, was going to kill us. He was going to kill Renamon. My Digivice was hot in my hand, burning against my palm.

"No!" I screamed, a raw, primal sound tearing from my throat. "You won't touch her!"

My hand clenched around the Digivice. A golden light erupted from it, bathing Renamon in its warmth. The light surged into her, wrapping around her like a second skin. Her body began to shimmer, pixels dancing around her form. Her legs elongated, stretching into a more powerful, graceful shape. Her fur deepened in color, gold and white blending seamlessly. Her single tail split, multiplying, becoming nine magnificent, flowing tails. Blue flames, ethereal and bright, began to wreathe her paws and the tips of her tails.

[DIGIVOLUTION]

"Renamon, Digivolve! Kyubimon"

A roar tore from Kyubimon's throat, shaking the very ground beneath us. It was a sound of fury, power, and fierce loyalty. The blue flames around her pulsed with her new strength. I felt a surge of pure adrenaline, a connection to her newfound power. Jewel, who had been struggling against two agents, paused, her mouth slightly agape as she stared at Kyubimon. For a fleeting second, even the agents seemed to hesitate, their red laser sights wavering.

Kyubimon stood tall, her nine tails fanning out behind her, each tip flickering with blue fire. Her eyes, once icy blue, now burned with an intense, protective glow. She was magnificent. She was terrifying. And she was mine.

My Digivice screamed in my hand, beeping a frantic warning. Kyubimon was still there, but now she was Kyubimon, taller, stronger, a beacon of golden light and blue fire. She moved with a speed Renamon could only dream of, a golden blur streaking across the pavement. Two agents, their rifles raised, were engulfed in her furious Dragon Wheel. Their screams were cut short, lost to the roaring inferno that briefly blossomed where they stood.

WOOSH

Kyubimon turned, a predatory glint in her now-fierce eyes, fixing on the man with the metal arm. The Winter Soldier. He was fast, impossibly fast. He ducked under her first strike, a clawed swipe that would have torn a normal human in half. His metal fist connected with her jaw with a sickening CRACK. I flinched, my own jaw aching in sympathy, but Kyubimon barely staggered. She was Champion-level now. The punch might have stunned Renamon, but Kyubimon simply roared, a sound that vibrated through my bones.

He rolled under her retaliatory burst of flames, a cynical efficiency in his movements. His pistol barked three times, spitting fire and lead. PING. PING. PING. The bullets struck Kyubimon's flank, digital sparks flying where they impacted her fur. She was tough, but even she couldn't ignore that. A low growl rumbled in her chest.

"Onibidama!" I screamed, my voice raw.

A volley of blue fire orbs shot from her tails, striking the Soldier at point-blank range. He twisted, a blur of motion, but the blast still scorched his tactical gear, sending a puff of smoke from his shoulder. He grunted, a flash of something in his empty eyes. He was adapting. He was learning her patterns. This wasn't just a fight against a super-soldier; it was a chess match against a cold, calculating machine. He understood how Kyubimon moved, how she fought. He was learning how to counter her, and that was a terrifying realization.
