Chapter 196 - Chapter 196

A makeshift lab hummed with activity in the New Mexico desert. Dr. Jane Foster stared at the data on her screen, peculiar energy signatures painting an abstract picture of the unknown. Dr. Erik Selvig, her mentor, scribbled calculations on a notepad, his brow furrowed in deep thought. Darcy Lewis, their sharp-witted assistant, organized a tangle of cables, offering dry commentary every now and then. They had gathered a wealth of data on the recent "wormhole event," which they theorized was an Einstein-Rosen bridge, a cosmic shortcut through space and time. Its origins remained a mystery.

"The cosmic microwave background radiation is… off," Jane murmured, pointing to a fluctuating graph.

"Indeed, Jane," Erik replied, adjusting his glasses. "These readings suggest an instability in the local spacetime continuum."

"So, like, a cosmic hiccup?" Darcy offered, unplugging and replugging a sensor. "Because that's what it feels like. A really big, universe-sized hiccup."

Thor, the man they had accidentally hit with their van, incessantly spoke of Asgard and his hammer, Mjolnir, which they dismissed as the ramblings of a concussed man. Still, his presence at the event made him their primary, if unreliable, witness.

"You mortals speak of mere hiccups when a Bifrost tore open the sky!" Thor boomed from his cot, his voice echoing in the small space. "Asgard awaits my return!"

Jane rolled her eyes, but a small smile touched her lips.

"Right, Asgard. Just try to keep the yelling to a minimum, Thor. We're trying to understand the universe here, not summon it," Darcy said, her tone laced with amusement.

While reviewing the extensive data, Jane noticed a new, distinct energy signature. It was an earth-bound anomaly, separate from the cosmic readings, yet undeniably linked to the overall disturbance. This piqued her scientific curiosity even more than the Bifrost itself. She pointed it out to Selvig, who confirmed its unique properties.

"Erik, look at this," Jane said, her voice filled with a fresh excitement. "A new signature, entirely localized, but correlating with the larger event."

Selvig leaned closer, his eyes scanning the new graph. "Fascinating. A terrestrial energy source, but with… digital overtones."

"Digital overtones?" Darcy repeated, walking over to inspect the screen. "Are we talking about a really advanced toaster oven, or something that actually matters?"

The team, ever eager for new discoveries, decided to track this unfamiliar signal, hoping it would shed more light on the strange phenomena unfolding in their desert.

Jane, Erik, and Darcy bounced along the dusty New Mexico road, their battered research van kicking up plumes of red dust. Jane gripped the steering wheel, her eyes fixed on the vibrating needle of her custom-built tracker. The signal pulsed stronger with every passing mile, pulling them deeper into the desolate landscape.

"Are we sure this thing isn't just picking up a really confused tumbleweed?" Darcy asked, adjusting her sunglasses. "Because we've been driving for an hour, and all I see is more… beige."

Erik peered over his glasses, a thoughtful frown on his face. "The data is consistent, Darcy. The digital overtones are intensifying, suggesting a significant localized anomaly."

"I know it seems impossible, but something is out here," Jane replied, her voice firm. "This signal is too powerful to be a mistake. We are going to find something."

The sun beat down, turning the desert into a shimmering oven. The endless expanse of sand and rock stretched to the horizon, making them feel small and isolated. The air itself seemed to crackle with an unseen energy, a silent hum that vibrated in their teeth. They were driving toward the unknown, and the anticipation was a tangible thing.

Suddenly, the ground beneath them shuddered, a deep, guttural rumble rising from the earth. The van swerved as a massive, dragon-like creature burst from the desert floor. Sand and jagged rocks exploded skyward.

CRASH

Groundramon, a creature of impossible scale, stood before them. Its hide, infused with jagged, mineral-rich scales, glinted like ancient armor under the desert sun. Massive, clawed forelimbs, resembling wings, tore at the air, each movement radiating raw, primal force. Its eyes, twin pools of molten gold, fixed on the tiny van.

Jane slammed on the brakes, sending them skidding to a halt. Darcy gasped, her sarcastic wit abandoning her. Erik Selvig stared, his mouth agape, his carefully constructed scientific theories dissolving like smoke. The world had just rewritten its own rules.

[Groundramon]

[Level: Ultimate]

[Type: Earth Dragon]

[Attribute: Virus]

[Special Move: Scrapless Claw, Megaton Hammer Crush, Giga Crack]

[An Earth Dragon Digimon with huge arms on its back. These arms, which are said to have transformed from wings, allow Groundramon to dig through the earth efficiently. It usually lies hidden in tunnels it has bored deep underground, and seldom shows its face on the surface. Groundramon likes living in veins of rare Huanglong Ore, and in fact the scales covering its body are very likely composed of the same material. Its personality is quite brutal, and most who encounter it wind up losing their lives. It uses its special move Scrapless Claw to crush enemies with its back arms, or Megaton Hammer Crush to knock out foes with the metal ball on its tail. While on the surface Groundramon may use Giga Crack, by which it slams its body into the ground to open up a fissure and drops the enemy inside.]

Groundramon's attention snapped from the three scientists to their battered van, its curiosity piqued by the minerals embedded in the vehicle. A low rumble escaped its throat, almost a growl of anticipation. The colossal Digimon lowered its head, its powerful jaws clamping down on the van's rear bumper. Metal shrieked and groaned, twisting like paper as Groundramon tore into the vehicle. It crunched through the chassis, its teeth rending steel and plastic with ease, devouring the van piece by piece.

"My research!" Jane cried out, her voice laced with anguish. "All my equipment, my data, it's all in there!"

Thor, seeing the beast occupied, seized his chance.

"Hark, foul beast!" Thor bellowed, pushing himself up from the sand. "You face Thor, son of Odin! Prepare to meet your doom!"

He charged, a mortal man against a digital dragon, his fists raised in a futile challenge. Groundramon barely registered his approach. A massive claw, designed to tear through bedrock, swatted the thunder god away with dismissive ease. Thor flew through the air, a ragdoll in the wind, landing with a soft thud in the sand several yards away. He lay there, dazed but unharmed, his declaration of godhood now sounding like the ravings of a madman.

"Well, that was productive," Darcy mumbled, a nervous tremor in her voice.

Erik just shook his head, his scientific mind struggling to reconcile the impossible creature with Thor's equally impossible claims.

Having devoured the last remnants of the van, Groundramon turned its attention back to the humans. Its golden eyes, now devoid of curiosity, fixed on them with a predatory glint. A deep, guttural growl vibrated through the air, carrying the scent of pulverized metal and hot sand. The ground beneath their feet began to tremble, a subtle tremor that quickly grew into a rhythmic thump-thump-thump. Groundramon lowered its massive head, preparing to charge, its powerful legs coiling for an attack.

Jane, Erik, and Darcy froze, their faces pale with terror. There was no scientific explanation for this, no heroic solution in sight. This was raw, primal danger, and they were utterly helpless.

BZZZZZT

A series of sharp energy blasts slammed into Groundramon's armored hide. The impacts sparked and flashed, forcing the colossal Digimon to recoil with a surprised roar. Its charge faltered, its massive head snapping upward.

A sleek, mechanical bird, MailBirdramon, descended from the sky. Its blue and silver body gleamed under the desert sun, and the Plasma Cannon in its beak still pulsed with residual energy. Perched confidently on MailBirdramon's back was Ethan. He landed lightly in the sand between Groundramon and the terrified scientists, his Digivice already in hand.
