Chapter 279 - Chapter 144 Part 3: Something Is Lurking Around the U Boat!

Something is lurking around their U boat, but what exactly is it? Does it have anything to do with DTR? And what will happen next?

(Patch!) (Patch!)

Fiona: "Hmm."

She took out the USB sticks.

"I have always kept these USB sticks. They contain everything about Dark Umbrella. So, if they ever get any stupid ideas again, like hurting my friends, me, or my sister, Herold will distribute these sticks everywhere.

"Every operation, including those where innocent people died... I always have to be careful. You never know when Dark Umbrella might become a threat again.

"Even if I love them, that doesn't mean I trust them blindly.

"Herold, Chika, or I only need one button if I am in the room...

"So it would be wise of them not to do anything stupid. I don't want to experience something like what happened back then with Mona, Noelle, and Parzival again, when they sent us on a mission even though they knew it was dangerous. Far too dangerous...

"I was the only one who survived."

Sophie was outside with the others while Fiona checked the USB sticks.

Fiona: "Nobody knows about these sticks. That way, nobody will be in danger if they are discovered. They will only blame me.

"And if Dark Umbrella causes another disaster with victims, I will be the only one who gets into trouble if this information is made public. That is why... these are a weapon to protect Sophie and the others..."

(Meanwhile)

Rosika: "I have a question, Marcus. Who among you is the smartest?"

John: "Hmm? ...Smartest? ...Hmm... Fiona."

Marcus: "There is no question about it. Fiona."

Rosika: "Huh?..."

Marcus: "When it comes to fighting, that's me. When it comes to thinking, Fiona. When it comes to talking, Sophie... But of course, Fiona is the smartest among us."

John: "Although I am a scientist, I have to admit... when it comes to strategy and thinking things through, Fiona shocks me.

"That is why Dark Umbrella is afraid of her. They know Fiona isn't one hundred percent loyal to any of them. She is willing to ignore their orders... or perhaps she even knows how to make sure they wouldn't dare betray her.

"I'm sure she has information about Dark Umbrella, and if they betray her, she will expose everything. She is smart. She trusts nobody, and that is a smart thing to do."

Rosika: "But she trusts us."

John: "Yes, that is different... She probably does it for your sake."

Marcus: "Before you all arrived, Fiona was even better at thinking things through. Everyone was afraid of her because nobody ever knew what she was planning.

She could keep Dark Umbrella in check the entire time, like a chess player. She would checkmate them. That is why so many people were afraid of her.

Especially since she killed Lady Natascha and managed to avoid being punished by Dark Umbrella. They knew Fiona would probably make sure the others found out about the Howgarts experiments if they punished her...

For years, Dark Umbrella even wanted to get rid of Fiona, perhaps by making her sick or something. But they know that Fiona... can be very useful as long as they don't betray her."

Marcus: "You could say she is exactly what you would expect from a woman who was originally intended for espionage."

Rosika: "Huh?"

Marcus: "Didn't you know? Fiona was originally intended for espionage, just like me. But she chose to become a detective."

Rosika: "What about you, Marcus?"

Marcus: "Me? I am the strongest... Fiona is smart, but she isn't strong. I mean, in terms of fighting, things would be difficult for her. Nevertheless, you must never underestimate her.

"But I am strong. As for Sophie, she knows how to negotiate with others. She is probably the most underestimated among us because she is smart too, just in a different way. She simply doesn't show it in the same way.

"But after everything that has happened, we must not forget that she worked alone for years before joining Lilly Moon with Fiona. Just managing that on her own and achieving a success rate of seventy two percent in her cases is incredible."

Rosika: "Who has the most weaknesses?"

Marcus: "Fiona."

John: "Yes..."

Rosika: "Why?"

Marcus thought for a moment.

Marcus: "She is always sad... She is always afraid of losing people. We must not forget her war trauma and the trauma from the experiments. On top of that, she always thinks too much about others..."

John: "Yes... She also gets sad whenever someone gets hurt. She has become very caring."

Rosika: "Hmm... (Cough) ...Okay, I understand."

John: "That isn't a bad thing... but it does worry me. Fiona... the old Fiona... hardly cared about others."

Marcus: "Not entirely true... She was always like this. She simply shows her caring side more openly now. That is a good thing, but it can also be exploited.

"Sophie also needs to learn that she can use more force during missions. And me? I need to learn to get used to blood... but that is difficult."

John: "Well, that is just how we are. We are human. Everyone has weaknesses. Neither Marcus, Fiona, nor Sophie is perfect."

Rosika: "Hmm."

The door opened.

Sophie: "All right... I have researched quite a few things... Hmm? Where are Lina and Fiona?"

Marcus: "I don't know. What did you research?"

Sophie: "Well, the DTR case. It hasn't only appeared in the sea... It has appeared at a specific depth."

Marcus: "Hmm?"

Sophie: "...Five thousand meters deep in the sea."

Marcus: "We are currently three thousand meters down..."

John: "Oh dear... So things are going to get even creepier?"

(Patch!) (Patch!)

Fiona: "What is going to get creepier?"

Sophie: "Oh... Fiona... Where have you been?"

Fiona: "I was in my room, trying to think of something about this DTR... I think Marcus might be right. DTR has no meaning... But it could also be a name."

Marcus: "Hmm?"

Fiona: "The name of a code, a location, or... a mission."

Marcus: "You think someone wants to give us a mission?"

Fiona: "My dear, I am only saying what is possible... I have no idea. Unfortunately, I cannot see the future. I can only prepare us for possible outcomes so we won't be caught off guard... But even that is difficult."

Sophie: "Ohh..."

Marcus: "Sophie just discovered that the signal is even deeper down and has always appeared at a depth of five thousand meters."

Fiona: "Hmm? ...Okay, I understand..."

Sophie: "But I am not sure we will find anything."

Fiona: "How is Siegfried?"

Sophie: "He is fine. He has recovered by now... He is even spending time with Viola and Lina. Why?"

Fiona: "Nothing. I was just asking."

John: "Ohh... Were you worried about him?"

Fiona: "Cut it out, John."

She picked up the tablet.

Fiona: "Hmm..."

John: "Oh... As cold as ever. I mean... you are only pretending, but I know you were worried abou..."

She put her foot in front of his face.

Fiona: "Be quiet. I am reading."

John: "(Sniff)... Ohh... Your shoe smells strange."

Fiona: "It is a shoe. Did you expect it to smell like flowers?"

She put her foot back on the floor.

Fiona: "Hmm..."

Sophie: "Hey, Marcus... What do you want to eat?"

Marcus: "Hmm? ...How about noodles and meatballs?"

Sophie: "Hmm?... Yes... That should work. And you, John?"

John: "Hmm... Could you make me a small plate with peas?"

Sophie: "Okay... And you, Fiona?"

Fiona: "Hmm?"

Sophie: "What would you like to eat?"

Fiona: "Anything is fine with me. Your cooking is always good... But I would like something with sauce for a change."

Sophie: "Ahhh... How about noodles, rice with peas, and pieces of meat with sauce? What do you think?"

Fiona: "Mhm."

Sophie: "Okay... But what are you doing right now?"

just going through the data and everything we know about DTR so far. Maybe they overlooked something...

She found a photograph.

Fiona: "A photograph of the sea?"

Sophie: "Oh yes... It was taken a while ago. Why?"

Fiona: "..."

Sophie: "Hmm? Is something wrong, Fiona?"

Fiona: "Hmm..."

Marcus: "Hmm? What are you doing, John?"

John: "Nothing. I am just trying to get a look at that device."

Fiona: "Tell me, John... Do we have something here that would let us examine this photograph closely?"

John: "Of course... Go to my workspace. You will find a microscope there. It should help."

Sophie: "Hmm?"

Marcus: "Hmm?"

Fiona stood up and went to the room.

Fiona: "Something... is there..."

Sophie: "Fiona? Is something wrong?"

Fiona: "There is something in the photograph. I need to take a closer look... Hmm... Let's see..."

She examined it carefully.

Fiona: "Ugh... There..."

Sophie: "Hmm? What is it?"

Fiona: "Sophie, could you tell me what happened to this ship?"

Sophie: "Oh... The military U boat C4I? It disappeared... It was only years later that anything was found, namely a piece of the ship. Why?"

Fiona: "Look here."

Sophie: "Hmm?"

She made room for Sophie, who looked through the microscope.

Sophie: "Ugh... There is... something... But what is it?"

Fiona: "It... it is something large... Probably a creature."

Sophie: "Yes... Not a Ningen... But it has... hands, just like a Ningen... Only... I can see just one hand and... a huge eye.

"This was the last photograph taken by that team... But the ship was already underwater, which means..."

Fiona: "That someone took this photograph just before the ship completely sank."

Sophie: "Hmm... I understand, but I don't see how that helps us."

Fiona: "Not much... Only that we know something is lurking out there. Can you find more photographs like this? Ones taken by the U boats and ships that disappeared during the DTR investigations?"

Sophie: "Of course. Leave it to me."

Fiona: "Okay."

Sophie went to the research room.

Sophie: "Siegfried."

Siegfried: "Yes? Hey."

She grabbed him by his suit and took him along.

Sophie: "I need your help for a moment..."

Siegfried: "What... Oh... Okay..."

Lina: "Hmm?"

Viola: "Hmm?"

Sophie: "I am borrowing him for a bit, okay?"

Lina: "...Sure... We can just take a break until then, right?"

Viola: "Okay."

She threw him inside.

(Weee!)

(Crash!)

Sophie: "There."

She closed the door.

Lina: "(Sweating)... Uh..."

Viola: "Um..."

Fiona: "Hmm..."

She went back inside.

Marcus: "Looks like something is happening... Okay, then. Shall we go deeper?"

John: "Okay... But slowly and carefully, as if you were giving your wife a goodnight kiss."

Marcus: "(Sweating)... Okay..."

He guided the U boat deeper.

Marcus: "Hmm."

Fiona: "Hey, John... Can I lend Sophie the microscope?"

John: "Yes... Just don't break it."

Fiona: "Okay..."

(Meanwhile)

Sophie: "Hmm... This photograph... There... Nothing..."

(Knock! Knock!)

Sophie: "Yes?"

Fiona: "It's me."

She opened the door.

Sophie: "Hmm?"

Fiona: "The microscope will be useful. I will help you search."

Sophie: "Sure."

Siegfried: "(Sweating)... Why am I here?"

Sophie: "Be quiet and just look."

They placed the microscope on the table.

Sophie: "All right... Let's see. I found a total of... eight pictures."

Fiona: "Eight?"

Yep... The first one is this photograph of a ship called B31... A military ship built for Dehl. It suddenly broke down.

"This photograph hasn't revealed anything so far, although... I have a feeling the sea looks somehow different here compared to the other locations. What do you think?"

Fiona: "It does look strange... Let's investigate."

Sophie placed the photograph down and examined it.

Sophie: "Ohh... I found something... But... I am not sure. Is that... an eye?"

Fiona: "Let me see."

She took a look.

Fiona: "Mmmm... Yes, that could be one."

Sophie: "Okay... But the picture isn't very clear. It could be a Ningen."

Fiona: "Mhm."

Sophie: "Good. Let's look at the other pictures."

They continued examining them.

This picture here was taken from an aircraft... A military aircraft called QRS. It was there to help people because there were supposedly people in danger.

"The aircraft even survived... But the pilot... was the same person who made the DTR film."

Fiona: "Yes... But the film only showed an unknown creature. It only showed its eyes."

Sophie: "Yes... Hmm... And here... I think I can even see the eye."

Fiona: "Hmm... This one is clearer, so we don't need the microscope."

Sophie: "Wait. Maybe we can see its shape if we use it."

She looked through the microscope.

Sophie: "Ugh... I can see something..."

Fiona: "Hmm?"

Sophie: "...But... only a fin."

Fiona: "So it has a fin like a fish, hands like a human, and a fin."

Sophie: "Couldn't it simply be a giant Ningen?"

Fiona: "The largest Ningen ever sighted was about eighty meters long. I remember that from the photographs... But you must not forget, the larger the Ningen..."

Sophie: "The friendlier it is... That's right... This one destroys a lot of things. All right, let's look at another photograph."

They examined the other photographs, but they couldn't find anything new.

Sophie: "Hahh..."

Fiona: "Hmm."

Sophie: "All right, then... Hmm? Wait a moment... There is something else."

Fiona: "Hmm?"

Sophie: "A... recording."

Fiona: "A recording?"

Sophie: "Yes, but it is so old... Black and white... This must be the first sighting of DTR... In the year 1204..."

Fiona: "I see."

Sophie: "Let me take a look."

Sophie pressed play.

(Blob)

Fiona: "Only... the sea?"

Sophie: "Mhm... It seems to have been recorded from a U boat."

Siegfried: "Hmm."

Sophie: "(Sweating)... I forgot you were still here. Why didn't you say anything?"

Siegfried: "You brought me here without explaining anything."

Sophie: "Oh."

Fiona: "Hmm."

Siegfried: "Hmm..."

Sophie: "Ugh... Wait a moment..."

Something swam past the U boat. It was enormous...

Fiona: "Ugh."

Sophie: "Oh my goodness... That startled me. What was that?"

Fiona: "That was huge."

Sophie: "It must be at least one hundred meters long..."

Siegfried: "Mmm..."

It appeared again, and this time they could clearly see it.

Fiona: "Ugh."

Sophie: "Good heavens..."

Siegfried: "Ugh..."

Sophie: "Ugh... It... ate them..."

Siegfried: "Just like that."

Fiona: "Just like that?"
