Chapter 278 - A Stormy Era Begins

After casually slaying the three-headed Dark Gold Bat King, Cheng Xiao sheathed the Demon King's longsword. Immediately afterward, Nash beneath his feet emitted a deafening dragon roar. The next moment, a giant, dark red serpent appeared before him. Its eyes weren't particularly large, but its head and back had nine protruding points.

Each protrusion resembled a bright red mushroom, seemingly containing flowing blood. The serpent's abdomen was exceptionally large, bulging high on the narrow path, and its length was at least ten meters.

Cheng Xiao saw this strange serpent, and the serpent also saw Cheng Xiao and his companions. However, surprisingly, it didn't attack. Instead, it made a rather human-like gesture of bowing, as if expressing submission.

Hu Liena didn't know what kind of creature this was; in her memory, such beings didn't seem to exist in the Soul Beast Realm.

"It's the Ten-Headed Sun Serpent," the woman in black veil said in a deep voice. "It's the guardian of the Hell Road, and the final barrier. Once you defeat it, you can leave the Hell Road and the City of Slaughter."

Seeing the Ten-Headed Sun Serpent so human-like, Cheng Xiao didn't dwell on it. After giving Nash a command in his mind, he flew past the Ten-Headed Sun Serpent and headed straight for the end of the Hell Road.

The exit of the Hell Road wasn't very obvious; it was an oval-shaped light curtain formed by a white light. That was the end of the Hell Road.

Standing at the end of the Hell Road, Nash turned into a shadow and returned to Cheng Xiao's shadow. Then, Cheng Xiao took the lead and walked out of the Hell Road.

Seeing this, the others followed one by one. Now, although they hadn't achieved the so-called hundred victories, the City of Slaughter would cease to exist from this day forward. As for the fallen ones within the City of Slaughter, they would all perish here. "

  ...

Hu Liena, farewell." On the forest path, Cheng Xiao stopped and turned to the blonde girl following behind him, saying.

"Aren't you coming back to the Spirit Hall with me?" Hu Liena asked instinctively, startled.

She already knew Cheng Xiao's identity, which was why she had followed him after leaving the City of Slaughter. However, she hadn't expected that Cheng Xiao didn't seem to intend to return to the Spirit Hall.

"Yes, I have other things to do," Cheng Xiao said after a moment's thought.

"Alright," Hu Liena sighed softly. "Then if you have time to return to the Spirit Hall, remember to tell me. Only the higher-ups know your identity; the lower-ups don't know yet."

Hearing this, Cheng Xiao politely thanked her. Then, he and Hu Liena said goodbye and left in opposite directions.

"What are we going to do next?" Xue Di's cold voice suddenly rang out.

"Yes, yes," Bing Di chimed in, looking at Cheng Xiao with curiosity.

Cheng Xiao remained silent. He didn't know when the King would appear. Three Kings had already died, their bodies and flesh strengthening this land. The Demon King, the Illusion King, the Plague King, and the Beast King were still missing. As for the Dragon Emperor, he believed that once he killed the remaining four Kings and absorbed their magic crystals, that would be enough.

"Let's return to Heaven Dou City first."

  ...

  Papal Palace, Council Hall.

At this moment, the only sounds in the hall were Pope Bibi Dong's voice and the rustling of pens taking notes.

With the High Priest absent, the Pope held the most power in the Spirit Hall. Normally, the Platinum Bishops and Cardinals were those she needed to win over, but now it was the other way around.

As long as High Priest Qian Daoliu didn't recover, the Pope was the sole ruler of the Spirit Hall. Therefore, all the Platinum Bishops and Cardinals could do was obey.

"I think I've made myself clear enough. The situation on the continent is perilous. In order to unite against the alien beings in the future, I've decided to launch Operation Soul Hunting ahead of schedule. From now on, there will only be one voice in the Soul Master world, and that is the Spirit Hall."

"Gentlemen, I don't think I need to repeat myself, do I?"

As soon as he finished speaking, the entire conference room erupted in chaos. They knew all too well what Operation Soul Hunting meant—it meant using the power of one hall to fight against three major sects!

"Your Holiness, should we take action against the Clear Sky Sect in this Soul Hunting Operation?" A Hall Master of the Spirit Hall stood up and asked, "The previous operation records don't seem to include the Clear Sky Sect."

"That's a good question." Bibi Dong pondered for a moment, then said calmly, "Although the Clear Sky Sect lives in seclusion, they will still come out to disrupt our plans at crucial moments. In that case, we cannot let them live."

"This Soul Hunting Operation is of great importance. The elders of the Hall of Worship will also participate. I refuse to believe that the Spirit Hall, with its formidable resources, cannot destroy a mere Clear Sky Sect."

"Before the arrival of the alien beings, the Spirit Hall must resolve its internal threats. Only in this way can we concentrate on dealing with external forces."

Upon hearing this, the bishops' faces darkened even more. They had painstakingly climbed to this position, but Bibi Dong's words had completely broken their resolve. So, after climbing to the position of bishop, they would ultimately have to give their lives?

However, Bibi Dong didn't care what they were thinking. After giving her instructions, she waved to dismiss the meeting.

Once everyone had left the meeting room, Bibi Dong slumped wearily into her chair, staring blankly at the massive dome, lost in thought.

  ...

  An alternate dimension.

This was a vast land, stretching as far as the eye could see, filled only with endless darkness and occasional bursts of fire.

Inside a massive castle, five indistinct figures gathered. Seated at the head of the table was a man with long red hair and an arrogant face. Although he didn't speak, the aura emanating from him already instilled fear in the other four figures.

After a long silence, the Beast King, unable to bear the silence any longer, spoke first, "Dragon Emperor, Hundred Flames, Frostbite, and the Giant are all dead. Do you really intend to let the new Shadow King defeat us one by one?"

These words caused the already tense atmosphere to freeze. The other three kings stared at the Beast King with expressions of utter disbelief. They hadn't spoken because the Dragon Emperor's strength surpassed that of the other kings. The other kings were called Kings, while only the Destruction King was called Emperor—a clear indication of the vast difference in power.

Seemingly realizing his mistake, the Beast King slapped himself twice without hesitation, then lowered his head, waiting for the Dragon Emperor to speak.

After a long pause, the Dragon Emperor, his eyes bloodshot, slowly spoke, "Beast, we have already been defeated by the Shadow King twice. We were resurrected by beings from other dimensions using the power of our creators. But the Shadow King of the original timeline, Cheng Xiaoyu, is no longer someone we can contend with."

"After being resurrected by beings from other dimensions, I considered challenging Cheng Xiaoyu, but in the end, I chose to flee. He has completely mastered the Shadow King's power, even surpassing Aspen. What do you think we should do to kill him again?"

"Dragon Emperor, so you intend to erase all life in this dimension in order to enhance your power?" The most intelligent Illusionary Realm King spoke up. He was the one who suggested the idea of besieging the Shadow King last time, so he quickly guessed the Dragon Emperor's thoughts.

The Dragon Emperor nodded and said, "That's right. We have no chance of winning against Cheng Xiaoyu, but the Shadow King of this dimension doesn't have that kind of strength yet."

"I will perfect my powers here, and then I will return to slaughter them. At that time, not only Cheng Xiaoyu, but even the Absolute Ones, I will kill."

As he spoke, the Dragon Emperor's crimson eyes blazed with fire. As the proud Dragon Lord, he had been killed twice by humans he despised, but this time, he would never allow such a thing to happen again. He would transform all life on this planet into his own power.

"Alright, I understand what you mean." At this moment, the most handsome and also the most demonic Demon King spoke. He looked at the Dragon Emperor and said frankly, "This dimension is more difficult than we imagined. On this planet, there are even higher-level life forms. Dragon Emperor, what do you plan to do?"

"Just kill them all." The Dragon Emperor said calmly.

"Dragon Emperor, before that, I think we need to kill the Shadow King first. Otherwise, his terrifying power will become our biggest obstacle again," the Beast King suggested.

"Go, kill him. His magic will be used to irrigate the earth, and the same will happen to you if he kills you."

The other four kings nodded silently upon hearing this.

  ...

Heavenly Dou City, Seven Star Academy.

In a quiet room, Cheng Xiao sat cross-legged on the bed, a faint magical aura hovering around his body, his black shadow filling the entire room.

The Snow Empress and Ice Empress sat on the sofa beside him. These past few days, they had rarely gone out, mostly staying indoors, listening to the shadow soldiers tell Cheng Xiao's story.

On this day, Cheng Xiao suddenly stopped cultivating. He slowly opened his eyes, his dark pupils as dark as an abyss. He casually twisted his neck, making a series of crisp cracking sounds.

"Finished cultivating?" The Snow Empress glanced at Cheng Xiao and said coldly.

"Yes, just stabilizing." Cheng Xiao nodded, then got out of bed and prepared to open the door.

Just as Cheng Xiao's hand was about to touch the doorknob, the door was suddenly pushed open, and an old man in a green robe walked in. When he saw Cheng Xiao standing in front of the door with his hand halfway outstretched, he was stunned for a moment, then quickly closed the door and left.

At the same time, Dugu Bo's voice came from outside the door.

"You brat, I'm here. Open the door."

Hearing Dugu Bo's voice and remembering his actions just now, Cheng Xiao's lips twitched, and he opened the door.

"Cheng Xiao, you're treating this old man like a workhorse, aren't you?" As soon as he entered, Dugu Bo said to Cheng Xiao, "You're such an easygoing manager, do you know how busy I've been lately that I'm losing hair!"

"It's alright, old poisoner, I believe you." Cheng Xiao smiled, patting Dugu Bo's shoulder. "You're the dean of our academy, if you're not busy, who is?"

"Besides, losing a couple of hairs is just a matter of time. Doesn't that prove you're young? If you weren't young, you wouldn't have any hair to lose."

"Hiss..." Hearing this, Dugu Bo gasped. For some reason, he felt there was some truth to what Cheng Xiao said.

"Has there been any major change in the situation on the mainland recently?" Cheng Xiao asked.

Dugu Bo frowned, pondered for a moment, and said in a deep voice, "The Spirit Hall is probably about to do something. Recently, they've gathered all the Spirit Masters above the Bishop level scattered throughout the continent. I estimate they'll be making a big move soon."

Cheng Xiao nodded silently. The timeline had changed, so it wasn't strange that the Spirit Hall was acting ahead of schedule.

"By the way, who are these two?" Dugu Bo put his arm around Cheng Xiao's shoulder, glancing at the Ice Empress and Snow Empress out of the corner of his eye, and whispered.

"I almost forgot, they're my friends." Cheng Xiao slapped his forehead and explained to Dugu Bo with a smile.

When Dugu Bo heard that the Snow Empress and Ice Empress were both Spirit Beasts over 100,000 years old, he was completely dumbfounded. Especially after learning about the Snow Empress's true strength, he was speechless with surprise. He had thought that 100,000-year-old Spirit Beasts were the limit, but now it seemed he had been short-sighted.

  "It's lunchtime, let's go eat!"

  ...

A magnificent waterfall, carrying a burst of water vapor, cascaded down from the sky.

Within the vast curtain of water at the waterfall, a black figure wielding a giant hammer could be vaguely seen. He stood directly beneath the falls, his body spinning continuously, the black hammer swirling and whirling around him. With

each swing of Tang San's hammer, the cascading waterfall rose higher, and within the massive curtain of water, a terrifying black light could be faintly seen, rising like a black dragon towards the top of the falls.

The terrifying scene continued. When the cascading waterfall, propelled by the black dragon, reached a hundred meters, suddenly, the figure beneath the falls froze, all movement reduced to a single, final point, abruptly halted.

All the black light coalesced and erupted at that moment!

  Boom!

The black dragon soared into the sky, and the massive waterfall scattered in all directions, unable to coalesce any longer. The two-hundred-meter drop of the waterfall vanished completely from sight in an instant. The enormous black dragon emitted a powerful roar, seemingly a howl, or perhaps a display of its terrifying power.

Tang Hao stood quietly by the pool, watching the magnificent scene before him. A satisfied expression graced his face. He knew he hadn't achieved anything like this even in his teens.

Yet his son, Tang San, had.

"Truly worthy of being my son, Tang Hao's son!" Tang Hao laughed heartily. "Little San, that's enough training for today. Take a rest. I'll take you to awaken your Blue Silver Grass second spirit later." Hearing this

, Tang San leaped off the wooden stake, landing lightly beside Tang Hao.

"You did well." Tang Hao patted Tang San's shoulder. "Remember the place I told you about where you could cultivate killing intent?"

"I remember," Tang San answered truthfully.

"Good. Change your clothes, we'll set off immediately."

  "Okay, Dad."
