The streets of Sunagakure were alive with the restless energy of anticipation. The first day of the tournament had ended, but the city had not slept; its pulse had quickened, its conversations had sharpened, and its focus had narrowed to a single point: the three-way final. Shinobi moved through the crowds with purposeful steps, their eyes sharp, their voices low. Civilians clustered around food stalls and betting booths, their discussions animated, their opinions divided. Merchants hawked their wares with renewed vigour, knowing that the influx of spectators would not last forever.
The crowd's predictions were as varied as the voices that voiced them. Suna supporters, the majority, believed the final was already decided. Their reasoning was simple, almost arrogant; Shigan was undefeated, Maki had defeated Mariko, and Suna had two finalists against one Konoha genin. The math was clear, the outcome inevitable. "Suna's strongest are facing one exhausted Konoha fighter," a burly merchant declared, his voice carrying across the square. "The final will show the difference between villages." A young woman beside him nodded vigorously. "Satoru was impressive, but this is a different level. He barely survived Kaito. Against Shigan and Maki? He doesn't stand a chance."
But not everyone agreed. Some more experienced shinobi, those who had watched the tournament with analytical eyes, offered a different perspective. A scarred jōnin from the Land of Rivers leaned against a pillar, his arms crossed. "Satoru defeated a puppet user designed specifically to counter him. He forced Maki to reveal her abilities. He has the Sharingan and unpredictable strategies." He paused, his gaze narrowing. "I still consider Suna favoured. But I would not count him out."
Satoru and Ren moved through the crowds, their appearances altered by Transformation Jutsu. The disguises were simple; a different hair colour, a slight change in facial structure, civilian clothes that blended with the masses. They had learned the value of anonymity in a foreign village, had seen how attention could become a liability. Today, they had a purpose that required discretion.
Ren walked beside Satoru, his steps lighter than they had been in days. The poison had been flushed from his system, and his strength was returning. He glanced at Satoru, a grin spreading across his face. "You are becoming famous. I heard a group of merchants arguing about your chances. One of them said you were the most dangerous genin in the tournament."
Satoru's expression did not change. "I only want to get through the tournament. Fame is a distraction."
Ren snorted. "Fame is also profitable. Speaking of which…"
They arrived at the betting payout area; a large, covered stall at the edge of the market, surrounded by a crowd of winners and losers. The staff were busy, their hands moving quickly, their voices sharp. Satoru and Ren waited in line, their disguises holding, their identities concealed.
When they reached the counter, Satoru presented his winning slips. The staff member, a thin man with tired eyes, verified them against the records. His eyebrows rose slightly as he calculated the payout. "Your returns are substantial," he said.
Satoru's voice was flat. "I know."
The staff member counted out the money; a stack of notes that represented a small fortune. Satoru accepted it without expression, tucking it into his pouch. Ren followed, his own payout larger than expected. His winnings were substantial because he had bet on Satoru before he became a favourite; the odds had been better before Satoru proved himself.
Ren's grin widened as he counted his earnings. "You are making me rich," he said, his voice low. "I should bet on you more often."
Satoru's lips curved; not quite a smile, but close. "Do not get used to it. But it is hard being the Richest Genin in Konoha."
While collecting their money, they noticed the updated betting board. The final odds were displayed prominently, their numbers large, their implications clear.
Current Betting Odds — Championship Match:
Shigan Sabaku — Heavy favourite. Reason: Undefeated. Has the advantage of entering fresh. Unknown full capabilities.
Maki Arashi — Second favourite. Reason: Defeated Mariko. Has massive chakra reserves. Revealed only part of her power.
Yamanaka Satoru — Underdog. Odds were low. Reasons listed: One fighter against two Suna elites. Already fought a difficult match. Limited information about Shigan. Sharingan consumes chakra. Genin-level stamina compared to Suna monsters.
Ren laughed at the odds, a short, sharp sound that drew a few glances. "They really think you are going to lose." He shook his head. "After everything you have done, they still do not believe."
Satoru's voice was calm. "They are probably right. Shigan and Maki are both fresh. I have already fought two matches. My chakra reserves are lower than theirs. The odds reflect reality."
Ren's expression hardened. "I do not believe that. You have survived impossible fights. The odds underestimate your ability to adapt." He paused, his gaze meeting Satoru's. "I am placing another wager. All my winnings. On you."
Satoru's eyes widened. "That is reckless."
"So is fighting two Suna prodigies alone." Ren's voice was firm. "I believed in you before. Nothing has changed."
Satoru was silent for a moment. Then he looked at the odds again, at the numbers that represented the world's expectations. He made a decision. "I will do the same." He placed his entire tournament earnings on himself. "If everyone expects me to lose, the payout is worth the risk. The final is difficult. But I have a chance."
The staff member processed the bets, his expression curious. He had seen many wagers in his time, but rarely from the participants themselves. He checked their identities, their legitimacy, found no evidence of cheating. He concluded that it was simply confidence. The bets were accepted.
As they walked away, the staff member muttered to his colleague, "Either he knows something… or he is about to lose a fortune."
Later that day, Team Five gathered in a quiet room at the edge of the arena. The final was approaching, and the time for preparation was running out. Mariko was present, her strength recovered, her expression focused. Ren sat beside her, his energy restored. Sayuri stood at the centre of the room, her arms crossed, her gaze sharp. Taeko was there as well, his presence a reminder of the village's support.
Mariko spoke first, her voice quiet but steady. "I couldn't bring the win against Maki. I am sorry."
Satoru shook his head. "Do not apologise. You gave me valuable information. I understand Maki better because of you."
Mariko's expression softened. "Then use it. Maki's Typhoon Release needs airflow stability. She can reshape battlefield conditions, but she is vulnerable when her control is disrupted. Do not let her control the arena. Do not fight prolonged battles. Force her to adapt to you, not the other way around."
Satoru nodded, filing the advice away.
Sayuri stepped forward, her voice calm but carrying the weight of authority. "You have already defeated two of Suna's strongest. The final is not about proving superiority. It is about making the right decisions. You represent Team Five. You represent Konoha. Remember what you have learned, and trust your instincts."
Satoru met her gaze. "I will."
On the Kage viewing platform, Hiruzen and Rasa observed the crowd gathering below. The arena was filling rapidly; spectators streaming through the gates, their voices rising in anticipation. The final was about to begin, and the atmosphere was electric.
Rasa's voice was calm, but there was satisfaction beneath it. "Suna has the numbers advantage. Two fresh fighters against one. Statistically, Suna should win."
Hiruzen's response was measured. "Satoru has repeatedly defeated predictions. His greatest strength is adaptation."
Rasa's expression darkened slightly. "Adaptation works when there is information. Against Shigan, there is very little. Your genin is walking into unknown territory."
Hiruzen's gaze did not waver. "He has walked into unknown territory before. He has survived. That is what matters."
The arena filled to capacity; the stands were a sea of faces, banners, and raised voices. Spectators chanted "Suna!" and "Satoru!" their voices clashing in a wave of sound that crashed against the stone walls. The atmosphere was more intense than before; everyone understood that this was the championship match, the culmination of everything they had witnessed.
The finalists entered from opposite sides. Shigan walked onto the sand with calm, unhurried steps; his mask was in place, his expression unreadable, his chakra steady. Maki followed, her silver eyes gleaming, her red hair blazing, her smile confident. Satoru entered last, his Sharingan already active, his steps deliberate, his focus absolute.
The crowd's reaction was immediate; Suna supporters cheered for their champions, their voices rising in a wave of triumph. Konoha supporters cheered for Satoru, their hope flickering in the shadow of Suna's dominance.
The proctor stood between them, his voice amplified by chakra. "The final match will be a three-way battle. The winner is the last remaining fighter. All three may attack each other. There are no restrictions, no limitations. Fight."
The three fighters took their positions. Shigan's masked face turned toward Satoru, his gaze cold, analytical. Maki smiled, her silver eyes gleaming with anticipation. Satoru activated his Sharingan fully; the three tomoe spun, and the world sharpened into red-tinged clarity.
The crowd fell silent.
The proctor raised his hand. "Begin!"
