Kael moved across the quiet streets with calm steps, but his heart was not calm at all. Each day felt heavier as the dark forces grew stronger. He had promised himself he would not let the shadows win, and for that, he needed more allies. Every power counted. Every voice mattered.
The sun had just slipped behind the horizon, leaving the sky painted with orange and deep blue. The lamps lit one by one, casting long shadows across the stone roads. Kael walked with a steady pace, searching, listening. His eyes scanned the faces of the people, looking for that spark, that hidden strength which the world often ignored.
For hours he found nothing but tired workers and merchants packing their shops. He was about to turn back when something strange caught his attention. Across the street, a lone figure stood watching him. The man was still, yet Kael felt his gaze pierce through him.
Kael blinked once, and the figure was gone. A second later, the same man appeared behind him, then in a distant alley, then once again on a rooftop. He moved as if distance meant nothing, as if space bent around him.
Kael did not wait for an attack. With the reflex of a fighter who had seen too many battles, he moved first. He rushed forward, caught the man by the collar, and pressed a knife close to his throat.
The man's eyes widened in shock. He raised his hands slowly, not in defense but in disbelief. His voice came out in many echoes, as if a crowd spoke through him. "Who are you", he asked.
Kael felt the hairs on his arms rise. He turned his head, and his breath caught. Around him stood more than a dozen copies of the same man. Each one had the same face, the same stance, the same eyes staring straight at him.
Kael narrowed his eyes. His voice came out steady. Which one of you is real.
The man in his grasp looked almost amused. Without a word, he dragged a knife across his own palm. Blood fell to the ground in thick drops. But before the blood could even touch the stone, it spread, forming ripples. Each drop shimmered and rose, reshaping into another copy of the man. Within seconds, even more versions of him stood around Kael.
Kael released his hold, stepping back but keeping his guard high. He had seen many powers, but this one was different, dangerous, and wild. The air was thick with silence, broken only by the sound of the new copies breathing in unison.
Kael lowered his blade. I am not your enemy, he said. I am searching for warriors. The world is sliding into darkness. The hooded figures are moving faster, and soon they will strike. I am building a team to fight them. Will you join us.
The copies all tilted their heads at the same time. The one closest to Kael stepped forward. His face no longer showed shock but doubt. You gather a team to fight the evil. But why me. My power is not strong enough for such a war. I can multiply myself, but I am not unbreakable. I am only one man, split into many shadows.
Kael studied him with sharp eyes. Power is not only about strength, he replied. It is about how you use it. An army of your own body can stand in places where one man cannot. You can confuse, you can divide, you can protect. Somewhere in this fight, you might become the very shield we need.
The man looked at the ground, then at the many copies around him. Each of them stood silent, as if waiting for his decision. He sighed, then met Kael's gaze. "Who are you really. Why should I trust you".
Kael took a step closer. My name is Kael. I have given my blood and my life once already to hold back the darkness. I have seen good people fall. I have seen children hunted for their gifts. I fight not because I want to, but because I must. If you have even the smallest will to stop what is coming, then you are one of us.
The man was silent for a long moment. Then slowly, the copies around him began to fade. One by one they vanished, until only the real one remained, his cut hand now healed. He gave a slow nod. My name is Darius, he said. "I have lived in hiding because I never believed my power mattered. But if what you say is true, then maybe I was waiting for this. I will come with you".
Kael allowed himself a small smile. Welcome, Darius. You will matter more than you think.
The two men began to walk down the empty street. The night was quiet, but the silence felt heavy with the weight of the battles yet to come. Darius walked beside Kael, still unsure but willing. He did not know what future awaited.
As they reached the edge of the harbor, Kael turned to him. There is no turning back now, he said. Once you step into this fight, the hooded figures will know of you. They will hunt you. They will try to break you.
Darius gave a faint smile. Then it is better I stand with others than fall alone.
Kael nodded. His mind was already racing with the next names, the next powers to uncover. But for this moment, he allowed himself the comfort of knowing one more ally walked beside him. The gathering was growing, and with every step, hope grew stronger.
Elias turned to Kael, his eyes steady. Have you invited all of our friends to join the team yet. Kael nodded. I am working on that, he said. He glanced at Kieran. "You will help me, but keep it hidden. Do not let the whole world know. I know you like to joke around, but now is not the time".
Kieran grinned and made a small joke anyway. Elias gave a quiet nod. " I can provide the list of people I remember", he said.
Suddenly, the sea began to churn violently, waves rising higher than the docks, crashing against the harbor with a force that shook the wood beneath their feet. The wind howled, carrying a salty spray that stung their eyes.
The entire team froze, weapons and shields in hand, hearts pounding. Nothing like this had ever happened before. Mira's voice trembled. "What… what is going on?"
Elias tightened his grip on his staff. Kael's eyes narrowed, scanning the water. "It's not subtle," he muttered. "Something or someone is here."
From the depths, a shadow moved, massive and deliberate, making the sea itself bend to its will. Creatures unseen stirred beneath the surface, circling, waiting.
The team backed up instinctively, the harbor now alive with unseen power.
Elias whispered, almost to himself, "We are not alone. And whatever comes from these waters… it's not here to negotiate."
The waves crashed again, higher, fiercer, and in that moment, every member of the team realized they had just awakened something ancient.
