Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Last Ember

Time no longer existed.

The battlefield, the armies, the mountain seven the sky had vanished.

Only fire remained.

An endless sea of living flame stretched in every direction, flowing like an ocean beneath a crimson horizon. Rivers of molten gold wound between towering pillars of black fire, while countless embers drifted through the air like stars searching for a forgotten heaven.

Darian stood alone.

Emberfang rested in his hand, though its blade no longer burned. Instead, it glowed with a quiet radiance, as though it understood this place belonged to something older than battle.

Across from him stood Corvus.

Neither man moved.

Neither raised a weapon.

Between them, the First Keeper watched in silence, his spear planted upon the ground of living flame.

"The first trial," the Keeper said, his voice echoing through eternity, "is not of strength."

Golden fire spiraled around them.

"It is truth."

The world shattered.

Darian stood beneath a sky he had never seen.

There were no castles.

No kingdoms.

No Frostvale.

Only endless forests, crystal rivers, and a mountain whose summit burned with a flame brighter than the sun.

Thousands of people knelt before it.

Not in worship.

In gratitude.

The First Flame belonged to everyone.

It warmed the world.

It healed the sick.

It brought harvest after winter.

It gave light without asking for anything in return.

"It was never created for war," a familiar voice whispered.

Darian turned.

The First Keeper stood beside him.

"This..."

"...was the First Age."

Darian watched children laughing around the sacred fire.

"No kings?"

The Keeper smiled sadly.

"No."

"No crowns."

"No conquest."

"Only guardians."

The vision shifted.

Two young guardians trained upon the mountain.

One wielded brilliant golden fire.

The other commanded silver flame tinged with shadow.

They laughed.

Fought.

Protected one another.

Brothers.

Darian's heart tightened.

"I know them."

"You should."

The Keeper's eyes never left the vision.

"They were us."

The golden warrior turned.

It was Darian.

Not exactly.

Older.

Wiser.

Yet unmistakably him.

The second warrior slowly faced them.

Corvus.

Before the darkness.

Before the Hollow Crown.

Before hatred.

He was smiling.

The vision darkened.

Villages multiplied.

Kingdoms rose.

Greed followed.

Men no longer asked the guardians for warmth.

They demanded power.

"We can end every war."

"We can rule forever."

"We deserve the Flame."

The brothers refused.

Kings answered with betrayal.

The sacred mountain burned.

The First Flame screamed.

Darian watched in horror as countless soldiers stormed the sanctuary.

The brothers fought together.

Side by side.

For days.

For weeks.

Until finally...

The First Flame began to die.

"It had given too much," whispered the Keeper.

"It could no longer sustain mankind's endless hunger."

The mountain trembled.

The sacred fire collapsed inward.

Darkness poured from its heart.

Not evil.

Pain.

Every act of greed...

Every betrayal...

Every murder committed beneath its light...

The Flame had remembered them all.

Its sorrow became shadow.

The Hollow Flame was born.

Corvus staggered backward.

He had seen it too.

"No..."

His voice cracked.

"That isn't how they told it."

"They lied."

The Keeper looked at him.

"Every generation forgets."

"The Hollow Flame was never evil."

"It was grief."

Corvus's breathing became uneven.

"My master..."

"The Hollow Lord..."

The Keeper nodded.

"He was the first guardian consumed by despair."

"He chose judgment over mercy."

"And so the Flame was divided."

The endless fire split before them.

One half remained golden.

The other became black as midnight.

"You..."

Corvus whispered.

"You separated them."

"I did."

The Keeper lowered his head.

"And I have regretted it every day since."

Silence consumed the Trial.

At last, the Keeper looked from Corvus...

...to Darian.

"My sons."

"One inherited hope."

"The other inherited pain."

"But neither inherited the whole truth."

The Trial changed once more.

Now both men stood before two thrones.

One forged from living gold.

The other from obsidian flame.

"Choose," the Keeper commanded.

Corvus walked immediately toward the black throne.

Then stopped.

For the first time in centuries...

He hesitated.

Darian looked toward the golden throne.

Then shook his head.

"I don't want a throne."

The Keeper watched him carefully.

"What do you seek?"

Darian looked into the endless sea of fire.

"A world where no child has to carry this burden again."

Silence.

Then...

The First Flame erupted.

Every ember in existence rushed toward Darian.

Not violently.

Joyfully.

The golden throne dissolved into light.

Instead of crowning him...

The fire entered his heart.

The Keeper smiled.

"Then the Flame has chosen well."

He raised his spear.

"I name you..."

"...the Last Ember."

"Not because you are the end."

"But because you are the beginning."

A deafening roar echoed across eternity.

Corvus cried out.

The Hollow Crown shattered.

Instead of breaking...

It melted into black fire that wrapped around his body like living armor.

He fell to one knee.

Dark wings of smoke unfolded behind him.

His eyes became twin stars of obsidian flame.

The Keeper's expression became grave.

"It has accepted you."

Corvus slowly stood.

His voice was no longer entirely his own.

"Brother..."

"We are not finished."

Darkness exploded.

The Trial collapsed.

The armies of Frostvale looked up as reality returned.

Darian and Corvus reappeared above the battlefield, suspended within a storm of golden and black fire.

A shockwave burst across the valley.

Snow melted instantly.

Every soldier was thrown backward.

The seven pillars of flame extinguished themselves.

The Gate of Fire slowly closed.

Darian descended gently onto Frostvale's walls.

Serenya ran to him.

"Darian!"

He caught her before she reached him.

"I'm here."

She stared into his eyes.

The gold within them had become calm.

No longer wild.

No longer frightening.

Simply...

Alive.

Across the valley...

Corvus landed among the Hollow army.

His new armor breathed black fire.

Even Lady Miren stepped back in fear.

Corvus looked toward Darian one final time.

"There will be no more running."

"Next time..."

"...we finish what began before history."

He turned.

The Hollow army withdrew.

Not in defeat.

In preparation.

For three days Frostvale buried its dead.

The broken walls were rebuilt.

The Sanctum was sealed once more.

Captain Aeric stood upon the repaired battlements as ravens departed in every direction.

One flew west.

Another south.

Another beyond the eastern sea.

Each carried the same message.

The Last Ember has awakened.

Far away...

Kings abandoned council meetings.

Queens unlocked forgotten vaults.

Ancient orders stirred from centuries of hiding.

Mercenaries accepted impossible contracts.

Assassins whispered a single name.

Darian.

Back in Frostvale, the First Keeper's spear had vanished.

Only one sentence remained carved into the stone floor of the Sanctum.

When the Last Ember burns...

...the Ashen War begins.

Serenya stood beside Darian as dawn broke over the mountains.

"The world is coming."

Darian looked toward the endless horizon.

"Then we'll be ready."

Far beyond the northern sea...

Something immense opened its eyes beneath a mountain of black stone.

It smiled.

And the age of hidden flames came to an end.
