Noctis reached the subway district before the police had fully closed the streets around it. From the edge of a rooftop across from the station entrance, he watched uniformed officers push pedestrians away from the steps while paramedics forced their way through the crowd with folded stretchers and medical bags. Several people stood behind the forming perimeter with their phones raised, trying to film through the movement of police jackets, flashing lights, and frightened commuters still spilling from the station. The official response had only begun, but the supernatural conflict below had already moved beyond the point where ordinary authorities could understand it.
He remained at the rooftop edge without descending. The stronger signatures were still below street level, divided between tiled corridors, maintenance routes, platforms, and older service spaces buried behind public walls. Vampire blood carried a colder, more controlled pressure through the station, while the lycans moved with a rougher heat that spread through their bodies whenever aggression pushed them closer to transformation. Between those forces were hundreds of humans trying to escape through stairwells too narrow for panic. The station had become a confusion of running feet, abandoned bags, halted trains, shouting employees, and gunshots that echoed farther than the people firing them could control.
Michael Corvin remained inside.
Noctis could feel the human moving through the chaos, his breathing too fast and his heart striking hard enough that every burst of fear made his blood stand out from the surrounding crowd. He had no trained instincts for this kind of pursuit. He did not understand why two men had followed him into the station, why armed strangers had opened fire around him, or why some of those strangers moved with a speed that could not be explained by adrenaline. He only understood that people were shooting, that several of them seemed interested in him, and that every path he chose threatened to carry him deeper into the conflict.
For the moment, that was not enough to make Noctis interfere.
Michael was frightened, but he was still moving. The vampires had not identified him as their primary target yet, and the lycans closest to him were trying to follow rather than kill him. One of them had already been forced away by gunfire, while the other remained several corridors behind, pinned down by a vampire whose attention was fixed on the lycan rather than the human. Michael had stumbled into the center of an old war, but neither side had gained control of him. He still had several possible exits, and the confusion of the crowd gave him protection that none of the supernatural combatants had intended to provide.
Noctis settled his weight against the rooftop ledge and watched.
There was no reason to insert himself merely because he recognized the human below. Michael Corvin would become important later, once his blood mixed with forces that had spent centuries refusing to mix. At this moment, he was still only a young man trying to find a way out of a subway station. His future did not make every second of his present a crisis. If he could escape without help, there was no benefit in placing another unseen hand over events that were already moving toward their established course.
The fighting below remained violent but contained. A vampire fired from behind a tiled column, forcing one of the lycans into a service corridor. The lycan returned fire, bullets striking the wall near a public map and shredding the edge of an advertisement. Humans screamed and dropped lower, using benches and turnstiles as cover even though neither would stop the kind of ammunition moving through the station. Michael ducked behind a concrete support, waited for a gap he did not understand, and then ran for a stairwell that would have carried him toward another platform.
He was still not in immediate danger.
Then Lucian entered the station.
Noctis felt him before he saw the shape moving through the lower service routes. The pressure of the lycan leader did not arrive as an uncontrolled flare. It entered with direction, compressing itself through the tunnels while remaining heavy enough to change the behavior of every lycan near it. The two hunters already inside the station reacted at once. One stopped retreating and turned back toward Michael's trail. The other abandoned his exchange with the vampire and began moving toward the next corridor, no longer acting as an isolated operative but as part of a plan whose leader had finally reached the field.
The vampires felt the shift as well.
One of them changed direction and signaled the others. Their formation tightened across the lower platform, weapons lifting as they abandoned their earlier caution and began closing routes rather than merely driving the lycans away. A second group moved in from the opposite side, cutting through a maintenance access that should have remained locked to the public. The fight had been a pursuit before Lucian arrived. His presence turned it into a contest for control of the station and everyone trapped inside it.
The difference reached Michael within seconds. A corridor that had been open ahead of him filled with gunfire as a vampire intercepted one of the lycans trying to reach him. Michael stumbled backward, turned, and found another route blocked by humans pressing toward him from the opposite direction. An employee shouted for everyone to move toward the nearest stairs, but the crowd could no longer agree on which direction was safer. Michael was pushed sideways through an emergency door that had been forced open during the panic, separating him from the larger group and carrying him into a narrower service passage behind the public platform.
Noctis straightened from the rooftop ledge.
Below him, Lucian gave his first order.
"Find him," he said, his voice carrying only a short distance through the tunnel but reaching the lycans tied to his command.
One of them looked back. "Alive?"
"Alive. Move."
The lycans surged deeper into the station. The vampires responded to their movement without understanding the full reason behind it, and several abandoned their previous targets to cut across the same paths. Michael's presence had become the center of the conflict even though most of the vampires did not yet know why. The old war tightened around him, and the routes that had protected him only moments earlier began closing one by one.
Noctis stepped off the roof.
Wraith Step drew him into the shadow beneath the building's edge, and he emerged below street level through a service access where the lights had failed during the first exchange of gunfire. He did not appear on the public platform or among the fleeing humans. He entered behind the walls, moving through older maintenance spaces where pipes ran above narrow passages and dirty water collected along the edges of concrete floors. The air carried dust, oil, hot metal, gunpowder, blood, and the stale breath of tunnels that rarely received fresh air.
Michael ran somewhere ahead of him.
Noctis followed without revealing himself. His pace remained easy, matching the human's movement from the darkness while the conflict spread through the surrounding passages. Michael reached a locked maintenance gate and pulled at it twice before realizing the handle would not move. A lycan was coming from the corridor behind him, close enough that the scrape of boots against concrete had already reached Michael's hearing. The human turned toward the sound, looked back at the gate, and pulled harder even though panic could not change the lock.
A thin line of Noctis's blood slipped through the darkness, entered the mechanism, and lifted the latch.
The gate gave beneath Michael's next pull.
He did not stop to question it. He forced himself through, slammed the metal gate behind him, and ran down the passage beyond. The lycan reached the barrier seconds later and seized it with both hands. He could have torn it open, but the delay was enough to expose him to a vampire cutting across the adjoining corridor. Gunfire filled the passage. The lycan twisted aside and returned fire, both of them losing sight of Michael as the human continued deeper into the service level.
Noctis moved on.
A second vampire reached the next intersection ahead of Michael and heard his footsteps approaching. She stepped behind a concrete support, pistol raised toward the mouth of the corridor, her body still except for the slight adjustment of her wrist. She did not know who was coming. She only knew someone was running through a route the lycans had tried to secure. Michael rounded the corner before he saw her, and the vampire's finger tightened on the trigger.
Noctis touched the underside of her wrist from the shadow behind her.
The gun shifted less than an inch.
The shot struck the wall beside Michael's head, blowing tile and concrete dust across his face. He recoiled, nearly falling, then pushed away from the wall and ran in the opposite direction while the vampire recovered her aim. She never got the chance to fire again. Noctis's hand closed over her mouth, his other arm locking around her throat as Wraith Step folded both of them into the darkness beside the support.
The vampire vanished without a cry.
Inside the shadowed service recess, Noctis twisted once and broke her neck before her weapon hit the floor. He caught the pistol, lowered the body silently, and left both hidden behind a row of electrical cabinets where no one in the active fight would see them. The vampires would assume a lycan had taken her. The lycans would assume she had moved deeper into the station. By the time either side understood she was missing, Michael would already be gone.
The next lycan came from above.
He dropped from a utility stairwell into the passage ahead of Michael, landing in a crouch before rising into the human's path. Michael stopped so abruptly that his shoes slid across the dirty concrete. He backed away, chest heaving, while the lycan advanced with one hand held out, trying to secure him without causing unnecessary injury. The gesture might have looked less threatening if the man's eyes had not already changed and his fingernails had not begun thickening under the pressure of partial transformation.
"Wait," the lycan said. "We're not going to hurt you."
Michael stared at him, then at the blood on his coat and the weapon in his other hand. "Get away from me."
"Listen to me. You need to come with us."
"No."
The lycan stepped forward.
The light above him flickered once.
Noctis emerged from the darkness at the lycan's back, caught him beneath the jaw, and pulled him away before Michael could process the second shape entering the corridor. The lycan's boots scraped across the floor, one hand reaching for Michael even as his body disappeared into the unlit space beside the wall. There was a dull impact, a wet crack, and then silence.
Michael stood frozen for half a second.
Nothing came back out of the dark.
He turned and ran.
Noctis left the lycan's body in the service recess with his throat crushed. The kill had taken less than a second, but the disappearance would intensify the confusion among Lucian's men. They were already struggling to distinguish vampire movements from the crowd and the station's blind corners. Losing one more hunter in the dark would be blamed on the enemy before anyone considered a third force.
He continued clearing Michael's route.
Another vampire entered through a side door, heard Michael moving, and tried to cut him off near a junction marked by rusted pipes and old maintenance signs. Noctis caught the vampire's coat from behind and pulled him into the darkness before he completed the turn. The vampire struck backward with his elbow, but Noctis shifted around it, drove two fingers through the base of his skull, and lowered him before the body could strike the pipework. The blood that touched Noctis's hand disappeared into his skin, leaving no trail for anyone to follow.
A lycan moving along the opposite passage sensed the death and turned toward it. Noctis waited until he crossed the threshold, then wrapped an arm around the man's chest and dragged him backward into a maintenance room with a broken lock. The lycan managed to half-transform before Noctis drove him headfirst into the concrete wall. Bone split beneath the impact. Noctis released him, caught him again before he fell, and placed the body behind a stack of rusted equipment where it would remain unseen from the corridor.
The fight around Michael became easier to shape as both sides lost people in places where their enemies were expected to be. Vampires fired into shadows where lycans had already disappeared. Lycans rushed positions where vampires were no longer waiting. Every missing fighter deepened the assumption that the opposing side had gained an advantage. Neither group had time to stop and study the deaths. Police were beginning to enter the upper levels, humans were still trapped in parts of the station, and Lucian's pressure pushed his people onward even as the path around Michael quietly emptied.
Noctis did not kill indiscriminately. He ignored the vampires who withdrew from Michael's route and left the lycans who moved toward the main platform rather than after the human. He removed only those who would have closed the escape path. A gun jammed when it should have fired. A door opened before Michael reached it. A vampire disappeared behind a column. A lycan stepped into darkness and never stepped out. The station's chaos swallowed each intervention because the truth was less believable than any mistake the survivors might invent later.
Michael eventually reached an older stairwell leading toward a service exit several blocks from the main station entrance. The door at the top was secured by a heavy chain and padlock. He struck the bar once, looked through the dirty glass at the alley beyond, and turned as footsteps echoed from the tunnel behind him.
Noctis broke the chain from the shadows.
The metal fell loose.
Michael shoved the door open and stumbled into the alley, catching himself against the brick wall before forcing his legs to keep moving. Cold air struck his face. Sirens sounded from the main street, but they were distant enough that the service exit had not yet drawn attention. He looked back once through the open doorway, breathing hard, his expression caught between terror and the desperate need to understand what had happened.
The stairwell was empty.
A light deeper in the tunnel flickered, revealing nothing more than stained concrete and the shadow of a railing.
Michael left.
Noctis remained below.
He could still feel Lucian moving through the station, no longer directing from a distance. The lycan leader had realized too many things were going wrong around Michael's route. Men had disappeared. The vampires had suffered losses that did not match the lines of fire. Michael had escaped through a path that should have been closed. The pattern was too clean to be luck and too uneven to belong to either known side.
Lucian began following the trail himself.
He moved quickly through the lower passages, pausing at each place where one of his men had vanished. At the locked gate, he found blood on the concrete but no body. Near the electrical cabinets, he found the vampire Noctis had killed, her neck broken in a way that required more strength than the scene suggested. In the maintenance room, he found the dead lycan with his skull crushed against the wall. He crouched beside the body, touched two fingers to the blood, and lifted them toward his nose.
The scent did not belong to the vampires he knew.
It was present only faintly at first, hidden beneath the smells of gunpowder, human fear, lycan blood, vampire blood, oil, rust, damp concrete, and the old air of the subway. Lucian followed it deeper, moving into the same stairwell Michael had used. The farther he went from the active fight, the stronger the scent became. It carried blood, but not merely blood. It carried something ancient beneath the surface, something dense enough that his body reacted before his mind found language for it.
Lucian slowed.
Every instinct built into his transformed blood told him that a predator was near. Not a vampire soldier. Not one of the elders hiding behind their coven walls. Not a lycan challenging for dominance. The pressure carried the certainty of something that did not need to announce itself because it had never learned to fear what might answer.
Lucian reached the lower junction and stopped.
The corridor ahead appeared empty. A single fluorescent tube buzzed above the maintenance door. Water dripped from a pipe joint and struck the floor at regular intervals. The scent filled the passage now, so strong that the muscles along Lucian's back tightened and his breathing changed. He took one step forward, then another, before his instincts forced him to shift his weight backward.
He did not flee.
He simply stopped advancing.
His eyes moved across the walls, the ceiling, the recess beside the old electrical panel, and the dark service passage turning away to his left. Nothing moved. There was no footstep, no breath, and no scrape of clothing against concrete. Yet the pressure remained, surrounding him without revealing a direction.
Then the shadow beside the wall deepened.
Noctis stepped out of it as though he had been standing there the entire time.
Lucian's gaze locked on him. The burgundy suit looked absurdly clean against the stained tunnel, the black shirt open at the collar, silver-white hair tied high behind his head, jewelry catching thin lines of fluorescent light. Noctis's expression held no strain from the station fight, and there was no blood on his clothes despite the bodies Lucian had found behind him. Only his crimson eyes connected him to the scent filling the corridor.
"Lucian," Noctis said.
Lucian attacked.
He crossed the space between them with a straight punch aimed at Noctis's face, throwing his body behind it without wasting time on questions. Noctis turned his head and let the fist pass beside his cheek. Lucian followed with his left elbow, pivoting through the missed punch to strike from the opposite side, but Noctis stepped inside the arc, caught the upper arm, and guided the elbow over his shoulder.
Lucian twisted free and drove a knee toward Noctis's ribs.
Noctis caught the leg under his forearm, lifted, and turned. Lucian lost the floor for an instant before his back struck the wall. He recovered quickly, using the impact to push himself forward again, and threw a short hook at Noctis's jaw. Noctis leaned away just enough for the knuckles to pass, then seized Lucian's wrist and folded the arm behind him in one smooth motion.
Lucian growled and forced his shoulder forward, trying to break the lock with strength.
Noctis shifted his grip, rotated the wrist, and used the pressure against the elbow to drive Lucian toward one knee. Lucian caught himself before touching the floor, planted his other hand against the wall, and shoved backward. The force would have thrown most vampires across the passage. Noctis stepped with it, released the lock before it broke, and let Lucian turn without giving him the resistance he expected.
Lucian overextended by half a step.
Noctis hooked a foot behind his ankle and pulled.
Lucian hit the floor on one hand, rolled across his shoulder, and came back up with more anger than damage. His eyes had changed. The human shape remained, but the lycan blood had begun pressing against it, thickening his muscles and sharpening his teeth as his restraint weakened. He lunged again, faster this time, using a low feint before driving both hands toward Noctis's chest.
Noctis redirected one arm, stepped behind him, and trapped Lucian's elbow against his own shoulder. The motion carried Lucian forward into another lock, his wrist bent downward while Noctis controlled the shoulder from behind. Lucian jerked once, then twice, each attempt tightening the pressure along the joint.
"Are you finished?" Noctis asked.
Lucian drove his head backward.
Noctis shifted aside, let the strike miss, and released him.
Lucian turned with a snarl, his breathing heavier now. "Who are you?"
Noctis adjusted the cuff of his sleeve. "You attacked before asking."
"You were following him."
"So were you."
Lucian's eyes narrowed. "You killed my men."
"I killed vampires too."
"That doesn't answer me."
"No. It doesn't."
Lucian rushed him again.
The corridor filled with the sounds of shoes scraping against concrete, fists cutting through air, and Lucian's breathing growing rougher each time Noctis slipped away from an attack that should have landed. Lucian changed rhythm, abandoned broad strikes, and began using shorter combinations built from experience rather than rage. Noctis answered with small movements, turning shoulders, guiding wrists, checking elbows, and stepping outside Lucian's balance before each exchange could develop.
When Lucian tried to clinch, Noctis caught one arm beneath the shoulder, rotated behind him, and lifted the wrist high enough to force his spine forward. Lucian planted his feet, muscles swelling as he fought the lock. Noctis released him, slid an arm across his chest, and used the momentum to throw him over one hip. Lucian struck the floor hard enough to crack the concrete, rolled through the impact, and rose with his control finally breaking.
The change began before he fully stood.
His spine lengthened beneath his clothing. The shoulders widened, tearing fabric across his back, while his hands struck the floor and thickened into claws. His jaw pushed forward with the wet sound of bone shifting beneath flesh. Hair spread over his arms, neck, and torso as muscle gathered over the expanding frame. The trousers split along the thighs, the remaining cloth tearing apart when his legs changed shape and his feet broadened against the floor.
Heat filled the tunnel.
Lucian's breath became a deep animal rasp. The final pieces of his human appearance disappeared beneath the lycan form, leaving a towering body of dark fur, heavy muscle, exposed teeth, and claws long enough to cut through flesh and bone with a single sweep. He remained conscious behind the transformation, but rage had moved closer to the surface, sharpening every instinct that told him to tear apart the predator standing in front of him.
Noctis did not interrupt.
He stood where he was and watched the transformation finish.
Lucian raised his head and roared. The sound rolled through the service corridor, shaking dust from the pipes and carrying into the adjoining tunnels. Water trembling in a shallow puddle broke into ripples. The lycan lowered himself, claws scraping lines into the concrete as his weight shifted forward.
Noctis's expression remained calm.
"Go ahead," he said.
Lucian launched himself down the corridor.
The transformed body covered the distance with far greater speed than his human form. His right claw swept toward Noctis's head, carrying enough force to tear through the concrete wall behind him. Noctis did not retreat. He raised his right hand and caught Lucian's wrist in the middle of the swing.
The attack stopped.
Air snapped through the tunnel from the halted motion. Lucian's feet ground against the floor, cracking the surface beneath them, while his claws remained inches from Noctis's face. For the first time since the confrontation began, shock displaced the anger in Lucian's eyes. His full transformed strength pressed into one arm, yet Noctis's hand did not shift.
Lucian reacted quickly. His left claw came across from the opposite side, aimed at Noctis's ribs.
Noctis turned beneath the strike while maintaining his hold on the right wrist. He twisted Lucian's captured arm backward, forcing the massive shoulder to rotate beyond its natural angle, and stepped around the outside of the lycan's body. As Lucian tried to follow the turn, Noctis lifted his leg and drove a backward kick into the side of his head.
The impact snapped Lucian forward.
One knee struck the concrete.
He twisted immediately, left claw sweeping backward toward Noctis's body even as the right arm remained trapped. Noctis turned until his back faced Lucian, extended his left hand behind him, and caught the second wrist before the claws reached him. Both of Lucian's arms were now stretched behind his upper body, the shoulders forced outward while Noctis stood between them.
Noctis bent his knees once.
Then he jumped backward.
His body rotated through a back somersault while his hands maintained their grip on Lucian's wrists. The motion carried him over the lycan's shoulders, pulling both arms higher as Lucian tried to rise from his knee. Noctis completed the rotation and landed with both feet against Lucian's upper back, his weight centered between the shoulder blades.
He pulled.
The joints gave with a heavy series of pops and crunches that echoed down the tunnel. Both shoulders dislocated almost together, the arms dragged backward beyond the range even Lucian's transformed body could tolerate. The lycan roared in pain and tried to throw himself upright, but Noctis remained balanced on his back, still holding the wrists.
Noctis drove one knee into the back of Lucian's head.
Lucian's face snapped toward the floor. The sudden movement finished tearing the shoulders free from their sockets, leaving both arms hanging at wrong angles behind him. Noctis pushed off Lucian's upper back and landed behind him, then kicked between the shoulder blades with enough force to drive the lycan forward.
Lucian struck the ground face-first.
Before he could roll, Noctis planted one polished shoe against the back of his head and pulled both dislocated arms higher behind him. Lucian's legs drove against the floor as he tried to push his body forward, his claws flexing uselessly in Noctis's grip while his knees and feet scraped across the concrete. His body twisted beneath the pressure, but the ruined shoulders gave him no leverage.
Noctis smiled.
"Stay down, dog."
Lucian answered with a furious roar. He drove his knees and feet against the concrete again, trying to force his body forward while Noctis kept both dislocated arms pulled behind him. His shoulders strained against the ruined joints, but with his arms controlled and Noctis's foot pressing down on the back of his head, he could not gain enough leverage to rise.
Noctis tightened his grip and twisted both arms.
Flesh tore along the shoulders and upper arms. Dark blood spread through Lucian's fur and struck the concrete beneath him in thick drops. His roar deepened into raw pain, but his legs still pushed against the floor, scraping uselessly as he tried to wrench himself free.
"Relax," Noctis said.
Lucian struggled harder.
Noctis twisted again, smaller this time but precise enough to widen the tears around the joints. "I'm not here to kill you."
The lycan's breathing came in violent bursts. He pulled once more, then slowed when the movement only increased the pressure through both shoulders.
"I need you alive," Noctis continued. "So stop trying to rip your own arms off."
Lucian remained tense beneath him. The rage had not left, but the words reached whatever reason remained behind the transformation. His claws flexed in Noctis's hands. His back rose and fell beneath the pressure of Noctis's shoe. For several seconds, every muscle in his body stayed prepared to fight again.
Then the resistance weakened.
Lucian stopped pulling.
Noctis waited long enough to make sure the surrender was real, then lifted his foot from the lycan's head and released both wrists. He jumped backward, landing several paces away while Lucian remained facedown on the floor. The lycan's arms fell beside him, hanging uselessly from the torn shoulders as blood continued dripping through the fur.
Lucian pushed himself up using his knees and forearms. The movement was slow, his breathing still heavy, but the damage had already begun healing. Torn tissue tightened along the edges of the wounds. Blood flow slowed. Muscle shifted beneath fur as the transformed body worked to repair what Noctis had done.
He rose onto one knee and turned his head toward the right arm. The shoulder remained visibly deformed, the upper bone displaced beneath the muscle. Lucian leaned down and bit into his forearm, using his teeth to hold it steady while he twisted his torso sharply. The arm whipped backward, then forward.
The bone slammed into the socket with a loud pop.
Lucian growled through clenched teeth and released the arm. He tested the movement once, then reached across with the recovered hand and gripped the opposite upper arm. With more control than the first time, he pulled the limb outward, rotated it, and drove the shoulder back into place.
Another heavy pop filled the corridor.
Lucian remained kneeling while both arms began recovering. The claws flexed. Torn muscle closed by degrees. The blood matting his fur darkened as the wounds stopped feeding it. He looked at Noctis without attempting another charge, anger still burning in his eyes but now restrained by the understanding that raw strength had failed completely.
Noctis watched him recover without moving closer.
Lucian slowly stood. His posture remained uneven for the first few seconds, shoulders rolling as the newly reset joints healed enough to take weight. The growl in his chest never entirely stopped, but his breathing began to settle. Intelligence returned more clearly to his expression as rage receded from the front of his mind.
The transformation released.
Fur drew back into skin. The jaw shortened with the sound of bone reforming, teeth returning to human proportion while the broad skull narrowed. His shoulders contracted, arms shortening as claws withdrew into fingers. The massive torso folded inward over itself, muscle compressing until Lucian's human body stood where the lycan had been. The process left him breathing hard, sweat and blood covering skin that continued healing around the shoulders.
His clothing had not survived.
Lucian stood completely naked in the service tunnel, staring at Noctis with open hostility while the last traces of transformation left his eyes.
Noctis looked him up and down.
"Put something on."
Lucian's expression hardened.
"It's indecent to stand there completely exposed while we talk," Noctis added.
For a moment, Lucian seemed more offended by the comment than by the dislocated shoulders. He glanced toward a rusted utility cabinet built into the wall near the maintenance door, then moved toward it without taking his eyes off Noctis. The cabinet opened after a sharp pull, revealing folded clothes, a long dark coat, boots, weapons, and several sealed packages placed there as part of a lycan emergency cache.
Lucian pulled on the trousers first, moving carefully while his shoulders continued to recover. He dragged the coat over his bare torso rather than struggling with a shirt, then fastened enough of the front to cover himself. His movements remained stiff, but the wounds had already closed into dark lines across the shoulders. By the time he turned back, most of the blood had stopped flowing.
Police footsteps sounded somewhere above them. Orders carried faintly through the station, followed by the metallic strike of a gate being forced open. The public levels were filling with human authorities, and the supernatural survivors had begun withdrawing through the older tunnels before the response could trap them underground.
Lucian looked toward the adjoining passage and then back at Noctis. "What do you want?"
Noctis adjusted the cuff Lucian had nearly torn during the first exchange. "I need your help with something."
"You kill my people, interfere with my hunt, break both my arms, and then ask for help?"
"You attacked me before I could explain."
"You were standing between me and Michael Corvin."
"I was standing in a tunnel."
"You helped him escape."
"I kept both sides from killing him."
"My men were ordered to take him alive."
"One of them was beginning to transform in front of him." Noctis glanced toward the service stairs Michael had used. "Michael didn't know the difference between being captured and being killed."
Lucian's jaw tightened, but he did not deny it. Police movement grew louder above, and the remaining sounds of fighting farther down the tunnels had begun fading into retreat. He looked toward Michael's escape route, clearly measuring how much distance the human had gained while they fought.
Noctis followed the glance. "He's gone."
"I know."
"He'll be easier to find again than explain to the police."
Lucian turned his attention back to him. "Who are you?"
"My name is Noctis."
"That tells me nothing."
"It tells you what to call me. Anything beyond that isn't your concern."
Lucian drew another breath through his nose, studying the unfamiliar scent that still filled the tunnel. "You're a vampire."
Noctis gave a faint smile. "Good nose."
"Not one of Viktor's."
"Me?" Noctis looked genuinely offended by the suggestion. "Being mistaken for one of Viktor's bloodline is rather insulting."
Lucian's eyes narrowed. "Amelia's, then?"
"That's even worse."
The distant movement of police carried through the upper passage before Lucian could continue. Boots struck the station floor above them, accompanied by shouted instructions and the metallic rattle of another gate being opened.
Lucian glanced toward the sound. "We can't stay here."
"No, we can't."
"There's another route through the old tunnels."
"Then lead the way."
Lucian remained where he was for another moment. "And if I refuse?"
Noctis glanced at the healing lines around his shoulders. "You already tried refusing."
Lucian's jaw tightened, but the approaching footsteps left little room for another confrontation. He turned toward the darker service passage and started walking, keeping enough distance between them to turn if Noctis attacked.
"You said you needed my help," Lucian said as they entered the tunnel.
"I do."
"With what?"
Noctis followed at an easy pace. "Let's get away from the police first. Then I'll explain."
Lucian looked back once, clearly dissatisfied, but continued leading him deeper into the old underground route.
They passed beneath low pipes and through a gate Lucian opened with a key taken from the emergency cache. The sounds of police response faded behind them as the tunnel sloped away from the public station and entered older infrastructure no longer marked on current maps. Water ran through a channel beside the walkway. Exposed lights appeared only at long intervals, leaving sections of the passage in complete darkness between them.
Lucian's shoulders shifted beneath the coat as they continued through the old tunnel. "My people won't be happy when they see me bringing a vampire into one of our routes. They'll smell the blood on me too. They'll know I was injured."
"They should be relieved that you came back injured instead of dead," Noctis said. "Especially after the effort you put into dying the first time."
Lucian stopped so abruptly that the hem of his coat swung around his legs. He turned toward Noctis, the irritation on his face disappearing beneath immediate alarm. "What are you talking about?"
Noctis stopped several paces behind him. "The branded skin you cut from your arm and gave to Kraven."
Lucian's expression changed. His eyes sharpened, and every muscle beneath the coat tensed as he looked into the darkness behind Noctis, then toward the tunnel ahead. "How do you know that?"
"Don't worry so much," Noctis said, his voice calm. "Aside from you and Kraven, I'm the only one who knows the truth."
"That doesn't make me worry less."
"I have no plans to expose it."
Lucian kept watching him, his suspicion unchanged. "Then why bring it up?"
"Because I need your help, and I want you to understand that I'm not here to hand you over to the vampires or interfere with whatever arrangement you have with Kraven."
Lucian took a slow step toward him. "What kind of help?"
"A mutual transaction." Noctis spoke with a faint smile, remaining relaxed despite the tension filling the tunnel. "You help me with something I need, and in return, I help you with something you need. We both benefit."
"You already know what I need?"
"I know enough to make you an offer."
Lucian studied him for several seconds. "And if I refuse?"
"Then you refuse." Noctis gave a small shrug. "I'm offering you an opportunity, not forcing you into an agreement. Whether you take it is your decision."
Lucian's eyes narrowed. "You expect me to believe you'll simply walk away?"
"If you turn down the offer, yes. Your secret stays between you, Kraven, and me."
The low vibration of a distant train passed through the tunnel beneath their feet, followed by the irregular dripping of water somewhere farther ahead. Lucian remained still until the sound faded, weighing Noctis's words against everything that had happened since the subway.
"We'll discuss the details when we reach the others," Lucian said at last.
Noctis nodded. "That works."
Lucian turned and resumed walking, though his pace was more measured now. Noctis followed several steps behind him, still wearing the same relaxed smile while Lucian considered an offer whose true value he had not yet heard.
