Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Between Classes

The final lecture of the day dragged longer than any class Ren had ever endured. Every time the professor turned toward the whiteboard, he glanced at the clock. Every time a student shifted in their seat, he imagined Aoi waiting for him outside the campus gates the way she had promised in her last message.

**Aoi:** I'll be at the usual bench under the ginkgo tree. Don't make me wait too long or I'll start stealing your hoodies as revenge.

When the professor finally dismissed them, Ren was the first out of the room. He cut across the courtyard, weaving between groups of chatting students, heart already racing.

She was there.

Aoi sat on the weathered bench beneath the half-bare ginkgo tree, legs crossed, a paperback open on her lap. The late-afternoon light caught in her hair, turning the dark strands a soft brown at the edges. She looked up the moment he appeared, and the smile that bloomed across her face made the entire day of waiting worth it.

Ren stopped a few steps away, suddenly self-conscious. They had spent an entire night and morning wrapped around each other, skin to skin, yet standing here in public felt strangely new.

Aoi closed her book and stood. "You came."

"Of course I did."

For a second neither of them moved. Then she reached out, her fingers brushing the sleeve of his jacket in a way that looked casual to anyone watching, but felt like a secret handshake between them.

"Walk with me?" she asked.

They fell into step side by side, close enough that their shoulders almost touched. The campus was still busy—students heading to clubs, part-time jobs, or the station—but the noise seemed to fade around them.

"How was class?" Aoi asked, glancing up at him.

"I didn't hear a single word," Ren admitted. "I kept thinking about this morning. About you."

Her cheeks colored, but she didn't look away. "Me too. I tried to study and ended up staring at the same page for twenty minutes."

They took the long way toward the quieter side of campus, where the path curved past the old library and the small pond. Fallen leaves crunched under their shoes. Aoi's hand brushed his once, then again, until Ren finally laced their fingers together. The simple contact sent a warm current up his arm.

Aoi squeezed once. "People might see."

"I don't care," he said, surprising himself with how steady the words came out. "Let them."

She looked at him for a long moment, then smiled—small, private, radiant. "Okay."

They found a quiet corner near the pond, partially hidden by a low hedge and the shadow of the library wall. Aoi sat on the low stone ledge and pulled him down beside her. For a while they simply sat in silence, hands still linked, watching the water ripple under the breeze.

Then Aoi leaned her head against his shoulder. "I missed this. Even after only one night apart."

Ren turned his face into her hair. "I kept reaching for you in my sleep. Woke up confused when you weren't there."

She made a soft sound of sympathy and shifted closer. "Stay with me tonight."

The invitation was quiet, almost shy, but it landed in his chest like a spark.

"I want to," he said. "I just… Haruto already covered for me once. And my mom—"

"I know." Aoi lifted her head. "I'm not asking you to disappear again. Just… come over after dinner. Even if it's only for a few hours. I don't want to sleep without hearing your heartbeat."

Ren's throat tightened. He nodded. "I'll be there."

Her smile returned, brighter this time. She reached up and brushed a leaf from his hair, her fingers lingering against his temple. The touch was gentle, almost reverent. Ren turned his face into her palm and pressed a soft kiss there.

Aoi's breath caught. For a moment the world narrowed to the space between them. She leaned in, and he met her halfway.

The kiss was careful at first—aware of the open air, the distant voices—but it deepened quickly. Aoi's hand slid to the back of his neck. Ren's free arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer until their knees touched. The familiar taste of her, the soft sound she made against his mouth, made the entire day of restraint unravel.

When they finally parted, both were breathing faster.

Aoi rested her forehead against his. "We're terrible at public restraint."

Ren laughed under his breath. "Completely."

She glanced around, then stood and tugged him to his feet. "Come on. Let's go somewhere no one can see us for five minutes."

They slipped behind the library, into the narrow space between the building and the old stone wall. The moment they were out of sight, Aoi pushed him gently against the cool bricks and kissed him again—hungrier this time, less careful. Ren's hands found her waist, then slid under the hem of her sweater, fingertips brushing the warm skin of her lower back. Aoi shivered and pressed closer, her body fitting against his the way it had in her bed, on her couch, as if it remembered every curve.

"I kept thinking about last night," she whispered between kisses. "About the way you looked at me when I was on top of you. About how you said my name."

Ren's voice was rough. "Aoi—"

She kissed the words from his mouth, then pulled back just enough to meet his eyes. "I want you again. Soon. Not here… but soon."

He nodded, forehead against hers, heart hammering. "Tonight. I promise."

They stayed like that for another minute—kissing, breathing each other in, stealing warmth—until the distant sound of footsteps forced them apart. Aoi straightened her sweater. Ren ran a hand through his hair. Both of them were flushed, lips slightly swollen, eyes bright.

As they stepped back onto the main path, Aoi slipped her hand into his once more.

"One more thing," she said softly.

"What?"

She looked up at him, expression suddenly serious. "When we're out here… when other people are around… I still want to be yours. Even if we have to hide the rest. I don't want to pretend we're only friends."

Ren's chest ached with something fierce and protective. He lifted their joined hands and pressed a kiss to her knuckles, right there in the open, where anyone could see.

"You're not just my friend," he said. "You're the person I'm in love with. I'll never pretend otherwise."

Aoi's eyes shone. She squeezed his hand tightly, and together they walked toward the campus gates as the sky began to turn the soft purple of early evening.

Somewhere ahead of them waited dinner, the short train ride, the familiar door of her apartment, and the quiet hours that would once again belong only to them.

But for now, walking side by side with their fingers laced and the memory of her mouth still warm on his, Ren felt something settle deep inside him.

Their secret world of two was no longer only a place.

It was becoming a way of living.
