The technicians had a protocol, which they were very proud of, and which lasted about eleven minutes.
Maren sat in the kitchen with a chalked slate in front of her and a young man named Dell explaining that they would work in two-minute intervals, with a bell, and that she should report only what she felt during the interval and not between them, and that the relay would carry a mark to Seven Peaks at the top of each one so the times could be lined up afterward.
"That's very tidy," Maren said.
"It has to be, ma'am. Otherwise we can't tell coincidence from correlation."
"No, I understand you. I did four decades of planting logs." She turned the slate around. "But you're asking me to feel a nine-year-old on a bell, and I'd tell you now — he'll not be on a bell. He's a boy. He'll be on his own time, and we'll be lucky to get him at all."
