Chapter 181 - Consequences

The towering spires of Fanisila rose above the city like silver spears piercing the sky.

Roland's transport drove smoothly through the wide avenues of Fansilia, weaving between towering glass structures and massive bridges that connected the upper districts of the capital. The city was alive with movement. Hover traffic streamed between buildings, banners bearing the imperial crest fluttered from every major structure, and the distant hum of millions of citizens echoed faintly through the air.

But as the vehicle approached the center of the capital, the atmosphere slowly changed.

The buildings grew larger.

More ancient.

More monumental.

At the heart of the city stood the Royal Palace of Fanisila, the seat of the empire's authority. Its enormous white towers rose high above the surrounding districts, crowned with golden domes that reflected the sunlight like small suns.

Roland slowed the vehicle as they passed through the final security gate. Imperial guards in ceremonial armor stood along the palace roads, their presence a reminder that this was no ordinary gathering.

"This is bigger than usual," Roland muttered quietly.

Youri and Leonora exchanged a glance but said nothing.

They already knew.

Today was the Grand Consul Assembly.

Every noble house with political influence in the empire had been summoned.

And they had been summoned because of the incident above Terria.

Roland parked near the main entrance.

The palace gates slowly opened.

"Good luck in there," he said.

Youri gave him a faint nod.

"Thanks."

Leonora remained silent.

Together they stepped out of the transport and walked toward the towering palace doors.

The Consul Chamber was already filling with voices when they entered.

More than a hundred nobles had gathered.

Some whispered quietly among themselves.

Others studied datapads containing the official reports from Terria.

The atmosphere was tense.

Youri and Leonora walked to their designated seats near the center floor of the chamber. As they sat, Leonora could already feel dozens of eyes turning toward them.

Whispers followed.

"They're the ones who fought the rogue unit…"

"Apparently the Duke nearly died…"

"Is it true the enemy breached the Catacombs?"

The room slowly grew quieter as more nobles arrived.

Then—

the chamber doors opened again.

Every conversation stopped.

A line of imperial guards entered first, their armor gleaming under the chamber lights as they marched in perfect formation.

Behind them walked Prime Minister Alan, dressed in formal black robes embroidered with silver thread. His presence alone commanded attention; he was the most powerful political figure in the empire after the emperor himself.

But even Alan stepped aside as the final figure entered.

The Emperor of the Terrian Empire.

Johan Adrin.

The entire chamber rose to its feet.

Johan Adrin walked slowly down the central aisle, his long white cloak flowing behind him like a banner of authority. His silver crown rested lightly upon his dark hair, its design simple yet unmistakably regal.

But it was not the crown that commanded silence.

It was the emperor himself.

Even the most powerful nobles lowered their gaze when he passed.

When he finally reached the throne platform, he turned slowly toward the assembly.

Only then did the chamber sit again.

Prime Minister Alan stepped forward.

"The Grand Consul Assembly is now in session."

His voice echoed through the chamber.

"We gather today to address the Terria Incident."

The words alone shifted the tension in the room.

Alan gestured toward a large holographic display in the center of the chamber.

Images appeared above the floor.

Battle footage.

Orbiton telemetry.

Destroyed Terrian ships drifting through space.

Then the image of the Hound appeared.

A murmur spread through the chamber.

"The rogue unit designated 'Hound' engaged Terrian forces in orbit above Terria," Alan continued.

"The engagement escalated rapidly when an unidentified warship entered the battlefield."

The display shifted again, showing the colossal vessel that had appeared during the battle.

"We still do not know the origin of this ship," Alan said. "But we do know that its forces successfully infiltrated the Catacomb defense network."

The room grew colder.

The Catacombs were the backbone of Terria's planetary defenses.

If someone had accessed them—

It meant the empire had been exposed.

Alan turned slightly toward Youri and Leonora.

"Duke Youri Kaelthorn. Lady Leonora Kaelthorn."

All eyes followed his gaze.

"You were present during the incident."

Youri rose slowly.

Leonora followed.

Alan folded his hands behind his back.

"Tell us what happened."

Youri spoke first.

His voice remained calm, steady.

"The Hound unit attacked without warning. It demonstrated capabilities beyond any known orbiton design. Plasma manipulation technology, advanced energy weapons… and combat synchronization unlike anything we've encountered."

Leonora continued.

"The unidentified warship appeared during the battle and deployed a covert infiltration unit to one of the Catacomb nodes."

"Were you able to stop them?" one noble asked sharply.

Leonora's silence answered the question.

Another voice cut in.

"Why were Terrian defenses unable to intercept the intruders?"

The voice belonged to Trevor Mosioh.

He leaned forward slightly.

"You were in command of the defense fleet, Duke Kaelthorn," Trevor said coldly. "Yet the enemy penetrated our most secure infrastructure."

The accusation hung in the air.

Youri met his gaze calmly.

"The enemy operation was coordinated with extreme precision. They attacked the defense fleet and the Catacombs simultaneously."

Trevor's expression didn't soften.

"Yet they succeeded."

Leonora's eyes narrowed slightly.

"They succeeded because they were prepared."

Trevor scoffed lightly.

"Or perhaps because Terria's defenders were not."

Several nobles shifted uncomfortably.

The tension in the chamber grew.

The debate continued for nearly an hour.

Questions.

Accusations.

Speculation about the mysterious warship.

And the terrifying possibility that someone within the empire had helped them.

Eventually all eyes turned toward the throne.

The emperor had remained silent throughout the entire discussion.

Now Prime Minister Alan stepped back.

"Your Majesty," he said.

"The council awaits your decision."

Johan Adrin rose slowly.

The entire chamber went silent.

He looked across the assembled nobles before speaking.

"This incident was unprecedented."

His voice was calm but carried effortlessly through the hall.

"No single commander could have anticipated such an attack."

His gaze moved briefly toward Youri and Leonora.

"The Duke and Lady Kaelthorn faced an enemy unlike any we have encountered."

He paused.

"Therefore… I will not hold them solely responsible."

A ripple of quiet reactions spread through the chamber.

"This failure," the emperor continued, "was not the failure of two individuals."

His voice hardened slightly.

"It was the failure of the entire empire."

No one spoke.

Then suddenly—

Leonora stood.

The movement drew every eye in the chamber.

"Your Majesty."

The emperor looked at her.

"Yes, Lady Kaelthorn?"

Leonora took a slow breath.

"I would like to request that both Duke Kaelthorn and I be relieved of our royal duties."

The chamber erupted in whispers.

Even Youri looked surprised.

The emperor studied her carefully.

"May I ask why?"

Leonora hesitated.

Her eyes briefly met Youri's.

"This is a personal matter. But also due to our failure I can no longer face my soldiers I hope you understand"

She spoke quietly but firmly.

"Until I am ready… I would ask to be free from official obligations."

The emperor said nothing for several long seconds.

The entire chamber waited.

Finally he nodded.

"Very well."

Gasps spread through the nobles.

"Your request is granted."

Leonora bowed her head.

"Thank you, Your Majesty."

Johan Adrin sat back down upon the throne.

"The matter of Terria is not finished," he said.

"We will find those responsible."

His eyes moved across the chamber.

"And when we do…"

The silence that followed felt heavier than any verdict.

The empire had been shaken.

And the consequences of that attack were only beginning to unfold.
