Inside the military truck.
Fish made sit down on my seat alongside my squadron.
"I'll be seeing you." She pointed her fingers right at me.
"Where the hell did you go?" Tobias asked.
"Nothing."
"Nothing? Is that how you talk with your fellow comrades? Tell us what happened!" Lena said.
Everyone nodded in agreement.
"Nothing ever happened alright!
Besides it's personal business."
"Oh! Personal business I see." Hermann blurted out.
"Yes! Personal business, something you guys shouldn't be involved in!"
I crossed my arms and puffed my cheeks.
"Oh, come on!" They started nudging me to spill the beans.
"I'm not saying it."
"Oh, com-"
"Just leave that bastard alone would ya!" Fish sounded.
everybody returned to their seats and minded their own business.
I chuckled to myself now that they left me alone.
"Alright Krieg, we should start going now." Fish banged the roof of the trucks cabin.
"On it!"
The truck instantly roared like a beast.
Black smoke puffed out from the exhaust pipe from the back.
And we started moving.
The wheels slid off the muddy ground.
As our combined weight slowed it down.
But we were for sure moving.
To the front we go.
***
Through forest.
As our truck went closer to the trenches.
I saw soldiers walking on the opposite direction.
Back to the camps to rest.
These soldiers were covered in blood, their bandages stained brown and red.
One had a bandage wrapped around his eyes, the fabric soaked through.
Another was missing an arm, the stump wrapped in dirty gauze.
A third leaned on two comrades, his leg dragging behind him like a dead weight.
I couldn't look away.
I couldn't stop looking.
How awful.
I looked back my squad.
All of their eyes the same.
Anticipation for what was to come.
Suddenly the truck stopped on its tracks and the driver yelled.
"Alright, this is far as I can go. Get out!"
The tailgate dropped down and Tomas was the first one to hop out.
Then Wesley.
Then Mara.
And soon enough, I jumped out.
Lena and Amelia closed the tailgate behind them.
Before Fish tapped the vehicle which notified the driver.
The truck started to move again.
It turned around and went straight back from where we came from.
I saw the vehicle leave out of my sights.
Going further and further from me.
I just hope, I get to see that truck again.
Grabbing my pendant around my neck.
I slowly raised on my mouth and kissed it.
Asking the lords that I and my friends get to survive this.
"Hey! Why the hell are you just standing there!" Fish yelled out.
Looking back, I saw that my squad was already moving without.
"Sorry!"
I quickly rushed over to them.
***
The group stayed together whilst we followed behind our squad leader.
Our heads lowly hanging around.
I looked at Gideon.
When we are looking gloomy with our heads down.
Gideon wasn't.
His head was straight with his eyes concentrated forward.
I let out a sigh of relief.
"You better raise your kids, Grandma." One of the veteran soldiers wheezed out loud talking to Fischer and they just left her.
Fish looked back at us and frowned.
Coming towards us, she walked besides us with our exact pace.
"Look children, it's not going to be as bad as you think it is. Your only job for today is lookouts during the nights and also fixing the wires in no mans land.
Nothing else. Not bad right?" She smiled at us.
"What about the fa-" I shut my mouth, realizing what I was about to say probably haven't been announced.
"About what?" Fish asked.
I came over to her and whispered to her ears.
"When I was meeting with the captain, I overheard that we were going to charge in just a week."
Taking my face away from her ears, I saw her expression completely indifferent.
I was a bit shocked by her reaction but I guess it was normal for her.
Just another Tuesday for her I guess.
She lightly nodded.
"Okay, it's better if the captain told us that herself."
I felt a hand touch my shoulder.
Looking back, I saw it was Mara.
"What was it?" She asked.
"I-um... nothing..."
I kept my mouth shut.
Not daring to tell them about the charge happening.
They would probably freak out and cause more trouble.
"Alright back to talking." Fish stated.
It seemed that she has dismissed my words.
Or rather she was acting like she didn't hear my words.
Not because she was in denial or in any kind.
But more like she didn't want to terrify the recruits.
"You see, fixing the wires isn't that too hard. You might cut yourself but nothing too extreme almost like a papercut. Turn replace the old broken ones with the new. Twisting and turning the tips and shit. I'll show you an example when we're at the trench.
But make sure to keep your heads down, alright?
Cause those Claudorians are good at seeing during night time almost as if they are owls.
When they spot you, they would mostly start off by shooting.
Picking off each soldier but one thing you should worry about is the mortars.
They're quiet as fuck but make sure to hear a distinct wwwwwwhhhhheeeeeeee-BOOM!
get it?"
We shook our heads.
Fish let out a sigh.
"Just... don't get yourself killed."
