Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Harvest

The chains held. Barely.

Golden light wrapped tight around the Void-touched wolf from every direction, and for one suspended moment the creature simply hung there, claws digging deep furrows into the dirt as it fought a restraint it clearly hadn't expected to survive. That was the part that unsettled Alden most. It wasn't just struggling — it was terrified, in a way that felt less like an animal in danger and more like something that recognized exactly what had a hold of it. As if it had met this power before, somewhere, and remembered what came after.

He didn't have time to sit with that thought. The wolf roared and purple energy flooded out of its body in a wave that shook the surrounding trees hard enough to strip bark. Two of the chains cracked audibly. Alden's stomach dropped.

Then the Ledger spoke again, calm in a way that felt almost obscene against the noise.

Authority: Harvest.Target Bound. Harvest Available.

[Harvest Soul]

He hesitated for exactly as long as he could afford, which wasn't long — another chain snapped as the wolf thrashed, and whatever was holding it wouldn't last more than a few more seconds. There was no time to weigh what harvesting a soul actually meant. There was only time to act.

"Harvest," he said.

The forest went utterly silent.

The wolf froze mid-struggle, every muscle locking at once, the purple light bleeding out of its body like water draining from a cracked bowl. A small sphere of silver light bloomed out of its chest — a tiny, impossible star, threads of brightness churning inside it — and the instant it appeared, the wolf began to scream. Not the roar from before. Something closer to a living thing being unmade from the inside out.

Alden watched, frozen, as the creature's fur turned ash-gray and its body folded inward, flesh shriveling, bone crumbling to dust in the time it took him to draw one breath. Within seconds there was nothing left where it had stood except a faint outline pressed into the dirt.

The silver sphere drifted toward him and sank into his chest.

Pain hit first — a white-hot flare that dropped him to one knee — and then, just as fast, it burned away into something else entirely. Heat spread through every muscle. His pulse hammered. He could hear the individual rustle of leaves a hundred feet off, could smell wet bark and turned earth with a clarity that hadn't existed for him thirty seconds earlier. Somewhere underneath it, faint and unwanted, he heard the wolf's dying scream again — once, a perfect echo, in a memory that wasn't his to keep. He shook it off and told himself it was nothing.

Harvest Successful.Soul Fragments Acquired: 12.First Harvest Completed. Reward Granted.Skill Obtained: Lesser Soul Sight.

A skill. His first one. He almost laughed at the absurdity of it — three years of drills had never handed him something with his name actually attached to it, and one dead monster in a forest had done it in under a minute.

He was stronger. Actually stronger, not the illusion of progress a hard drill left behind before it faded by morning. For the first time in three years, he could see the shape of a path that didn't end with him packing a bag.

The relief lasted about four seconds.

Danger Detected. Danger Level: High.

Cold water down his spine. A growl rolled out of the dark to his left. Then another, from the right. Then more, until he lost count of the direction entirely, because they were coming from everywhere. Pairs of violet eyes blinked open between the trees — one, five, a dozen, more still emerging from the shadows in every direction he looked.

The wolf hadn't been alone. It had been the first one out of a pack only now showing itself, and by the time the last set of eyes opened, Alden had counted past twenty.

One had nearly killed him. Twenty wasn't a number his mind wanted to process.

The pack parted as something larger pushed through the middle of it — a wolf built on a different scale entirely, nearly double the size of the others, its hide crusted with dark crystalline growths that pulsed faintly with inner light. Purple mist curled from its jaws with every breath.

Void-Touched Alpha. Threat Assessment: Fatal.

The Ledger didn't hand out that word lightly, and seeing it attached to the thing currently studying him like a meal made his grip on the shattered stub of his practice sword feel laughably useless.

The Alpha growled low, and the pack began to close in.

Then the forest lit up. A pillar of blue-white light tore into the sky off to the east, followed a heartbeat later by a second explosion that rattled the ground under his feet. Real magic — the kind he'd only seen demonstrated by senior instructors during controlled exhibitions. The Alpha's head snapped toward it, its focus splitting for one crucial instant.

One instant was all he needed. He ran.

The pack reacted immediately, a wall of snarling fury crashing through the underbrush behind him. He ran harder than he ever had in a single drill, vaulting fallen logs, weaving between trunks too close together for the wolves' longer strides, ignoring the fire building in his lungs because stopping to acknowledge it wasn't survivable. Jaws snapped shut inches from his shoulder at one point, close enough that he felt the disturbed air against his skin. He stumbled over a root, nearly went down, and forced his legs back under him on nothing but refusal.

The trees broke apart ahead of him, and he burst into a clearing lit by the aftershocks of the same blue-white light he'd seen from a distance.

A young woman stood at its center — silver hair, pale blue eyes, an academy uniform torn at one sleeve. His mind needed a full second to process what he was looking at, because there was exactly one person at Blackthorn who matched that description.

Elara Ravenshade. The top-ranked student in their year.

She wasn't standing idle. In front of her, a towering shape nearly ten feet tall dragged one massive claw through the dirt, its skin like black cracked armor, purple light leaking out through every fracture across its body. Elara's palm came up and a wave of ice tore across the clearing, sealing the creature's arm in a solid casing — for about two seconds, before the thing simply flexed and shattered the ice like it had been made of dry leaves.

Even she was struggling. That frightened Alden more than the entire wolf pack combined.

Elara's head turned. She saw him first, then the wall of glowing violet eyes closing in behind him, and something that looked genuinely like shock crossed her face for the only time since he'd known her.

"What are you doing here?!"

The Alpha broke from the treeline at that exact moment, its growl rolling across the clearing loud enough to drown out her voice. Elara's expression hardened as she took in the full shape of what had just walked into her fight — the armored giant in front of her, the pack behind him, Alden caught directly in between.

Then the ground split.

A deep fracture tore open across the center of the clearing, and purple light erupted upward through it, thick enough to bend the air around it into something no longer quite solid. Reality itself seemed to strain at the seams.

The Soul Ledger flared, urgent in a way it hadn't been until now.

Void Rift Detected.Emergency Event Updated.Survive.

Alden's stomach dropped through the floor of the world. Whatever was about to come through that tear in the ground hadn't traveled this far to be gentle about its arrival — and from the widening crack alone, it was already halfway here.
