The shocking buzzer-beater by Eno thundered through the arena, sealing the Queens' Victory and their coveted spot in the Christmas Champions Cup. In a joyous uproar, students and staffs from the Charlie Queens Academy rushed onto the court, celebrating their school's first ever participation in a national sporting event. The girls' triumph was an unprecedented achievement, one that their long-standing male counterparts had never accomplished. Tears of joy and laughter filled the court as the Queens reveled in their hard-earned victory
However, the air was heavy with sorrow in the Rose Mary High School camp. Despite their valiant efforts, the crushing defeat had taken its toll. Aisa, the team's Captain and Ace, fought to keep her composure while her teammates wept openly, their dreams of victory shattered
Gathered in the locker room, the Rose Mary High School Team convened for one final, emotional meeting. Coach Tunde, his voice thick with emotion, addressed his players
"My brave warriors, I know the pain of this defeat cuts deep. It was a fierce battle, and our fate could have swung either way. But you held your ground and fought with unwavering determination until the end. I want you to hold your heads high, for I am proud of each and every one of you." The coach's heartfelt words were met with tearful applause as the Rose Mary High School Team players found solace in his support
As the applause subsided, coach Tunde continued, "Today, as we all know, marks the end of an era for one of our own as she'd be retiring. I'd like to call upon our esteemed captain and ace, Aisa, to address the team one last time"
The weight of coach Tunde's words hung heavy in the air, causing the team to dissolve into tears once more. With a mix of trepidation and tenderness, Aisa rose from her seat, holding back her tears as she prepared to bid farewell to her cherished teammates
"My dearest teammates," Aisa began, her voice shaky with emotion, "it has been an honour and a privilege to play alongside each and every one of you. We have faced countless challenges together, and through it all, we have grown stronger as a team and as individuals"
She took a deep breath, trying to keep her composure as she continued. "Today, we may have fallen short of our goal, but the lessons we've learned and the memories we made will stay with us forever. I am so proud of the progress we've made and the bond we've forged on and off the court"
Aisa paused, looking at the faces of her teammates, her heart swelling with love and gratitude. "As I step back from my role as your captain, I want you to remember that you are all capable of greatness. You have the talent, the drive, and the determination to achieve your dreams, both on and off the court"
Her voice wavered as she fought back tears. "I will cherish every moment we've shared, and I will always be your biggest fan. Remember, once a Rose, always a Rose"
Aisa took a moment to compose herself before concluding, "I love you all, and I can't wait to see the amazing things you'll accomplish in the future. Thank you for making my time as a Rose unforgettable. And I hope our paths cross in the future"
As Aisa finished speaking, her teammates gathered around her in a tight embrace. Tears flowed freely as they shared words of love and appreciation, promising to carry on the spirit of teamwork and perseverance that Aisa had instilled in them
Though the pain of defeat still lingered, the Rose Mary High School Basketball Team found solace in the bond they had created. With Aisa's guidance and the lessons they had learned, they knew that their journey was far from over and they were ready to face the future with unwavering determination and spirit
As the emotional meeting came to an end, Coach Tunde dismissed his players, and they each made their way back to their respective homes. Despite the heart-wrenching day they had experienced, the Rose Mary High School Basketball Team knew that life would continue, and they must learn to move forward
Vicky and Aanu approached Aisa. They decided to go home together and wanted Aisa to join they. Vicky said, her voice tinged with concern, "Aisa, let's go home together"
Aisa hesitated before replying, "I'm sorry, guys, but I'm not going home just yet"
Aanu, puzzled by Aisa's response, asked, "Why is that?"
Aisa explained, "I'd like to see Tosin before leaving. Also, I'm going to visit my mother at the hospital before finally returning home"
Understanding dawned on Vicky's face. "Oh, I see. Well, we'll meet again someday."
Aisa nodded, a small smile forming on her face. "Of course"
The girls bid their farewells, leaving Aisa alone in the locker room. Overwhelmed by a sense of sadness for not leading her team to the nationals before her departure, Aisa struggled to fight back the tears that threatened to spill. The weight of the day's events pressed down on her, and she took a moment to collect herself, preparing for the final conversations she would have before embarking on the next chapter of her life
In the Queens' locker room, the atmosphere was electric with excitement as the team celebrated their historic victory. Cheers and laughter filled as they reveled in their accomplishment
Mrs. Lawal, their coach, raised her voice above the din. "Quiet down! Let's start our meeting now!" The Queens settled into their seats, the noise gradually subsiding
"First of all, congratulations on making it to the Christmas Champions Cup," Mrs. Lawal began, prompting another round of enthusiastic applause and cheers from the players. As the celebration died down, Mrs. Lawal continued, "You see, we've made history. It's the very first time…."
Suddenly, Mrs. Lawal noticed Tosin's absence and interrupted her own speech. "Wait a second, where is Tosin?"
Shalom, the closest to Tosin, stepped in to explain. "She left moments ago. She said she had to be somewhere and asked me to provide her with the details from the meeting"
Irritated by Tosin's decision to leave without informing her, Mrs. Lawal sighed. "That girl is always doing things on her own. Alright, girls, we will have to postpone this meeting until Monday at school. We can't have a team meeting without one of our team leaders. So, everyone, dismiss"
Meanwhile, outside the arena, Tosin stood by the roadside wearing the Queens' pink tracksuit trousers and their white number 10 top and carrying a bag, attempting to hail a tricycle
"So, this is where the legendary number 10 from the Queens is, huh?" Aisa said with a smile, approaching Tosin from behind, carrying a bag and putting on her team's kit
Startled, Tosin turned around to face Aisa. "Oh, Aisa, you're still here?"
"Yeah, what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be in your team's meeting?" Aisa asked
"I have to go somewhere, so I had to boycott the meeting. I'll apologize later," Tosin explained her situation
Aisa nodded understandingly. "Alright then, let's go together. So, are you trying to hail a cab?" Aisa inquired, observing Tosin's attempt to flag down a ride
"Oh, no. I'm trying to hail a Keke Napep," Tosin replied
Aisa raised an eyebrow, concerned about Tosin's injured leg. "Even with your injured leg? A Keke Napep? Really?
Tosin shrugged, her options limited. "What choice do I have? I don't have money for a cab"
Understanding the situation, Aisa offered a solution. "I see. Don't worry then; let me call a cab. I'll pay for both of us"
Relieved, Tosin breathed a sigh of gratitude. "Ah! Aisa, God bless you! You're a lifesaver"
As they waited for the cab, the two girls engaged in a conversation, touching on various topics. Aisa congratulated Tosin on the Queens' victory earlier that day. "Congratulations on your victory today. You guys are something else"
Tosin, beaming with pride, acknowledged her teammates' efforts. "You don't say. My teammates are amazing"
Aisa then shifted the conversation to the Queens' next game-the playoffs final. "Your next opponents are tChe Rose Newton High School"
Tosin nodded, sharing some history between the two teams. "Yeah, we've already played them twice. We were soundly beaten both times. I didn't participate in either of those games"
With a serious expression, Aisa analyzed the Rose Newton High School's strength. "This might sound harsh, but even with you on the court, I just can't imagine the Rose Newton High School ever losing to any team other than teams with members of the Victorious Varsity. After all, they've got a member of the Victorious Varsity in their team too"
Tosin, acknowledged Aisa's point. "Yeah, I know,"
Continuing her analysis, Aisa highlighted the importance of the upcoming game. "This game is crucial, Tosin. It might seem irrelevant to some people, as they might think, 'since you've qualified for the Christmas Champions Cup, what are you playing for in the playoff final?' But to be honest, this game is the most important game ever. Depending on the outcome of this game, your first match in the tournament this winter could either be a tough one or a walk in the park. It's not that the draws are rigged, but the existence of those five prodigies known as the Victorious Varsity makes it look that way. If you win the playoffs, there is no telling how strong your first opponents in the Christmas Champions Cup will be. However, if you lose in the playoffs final, there is a 90% possibility that your first opponents in the tournaments will be stronger than you, and it's highly likely that the strong opponent you will face in your first game in the tournament will be a team with a member of the Victorious Varsity"
Tosin's eyes widened, her grip on her bag tightening. "Interesting," she murmured
Aisa's voice took on a sense of urgency. "So, you guys must win this game at all costs."
Just then, the cab pulled up beside them, its horn honking softly. Aisa smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Looks like our ride is here," she said as the two friends entered the cab
A wave of silence washed over the cab's interior. Aisa, noticing they were halfway to the hospital, cleared her throat and broke the quietude. "Um….. Tosin, can I tell you something?"
Tosin, her curiosity piqued, responded warmly, "Of course, Aisa. What's on your mind?"
Aisa hesitated, the weight of her words settling in her chest. "Today's game…. It's the last time we'll go head-to-head against each other"
Tosin, bewildered by the revelation, questioned, "What do you mean?"
Aisa took a deep breath, summoning the courage to share her news. "Well, my family and I will be moving to the United States in few days. I've already said my goodbyes to my teammates and friends"
Tosin's expression brightened, surprising Aisa with her enthusiasm. "That's wonderful news! The move will surely benefit your mother's health as well"
"Yes, her well-being is the primary reason we are making this change," Aisa affirmed, her heart aching despite Tosin's optimism
Unfazed by the distance that would soon separate them, Tosin challenged Aisa's assertion with confidence. "This is just the starting line of our rivalry. We will face each other many more times, growing stronger with every battle."
Aisa, taken aback, questioned Tosin's certainty. "How can you be so sure?"
Tosin chuckled brightly, her dreams shining in her eyes, "Because I'm going to play in the WNBA someday and become the best basketball player ever!"
Tears of joy streamed down Aisa's face. She had just realized that she and Tosin shared the same dream. A bond forged through their mutual love of the sport. The weight of the day's emotion eased as Aisa found solace in the hope that their path would intertwine again
"Are you crying?" Tosin asked, noticing Aisa's teary face
Embarrassed by her own vulnerability, Aisa brushed away her tears, "Huh? No, I'm not crying"
As the cab arrived at hospital, Aisa stepped out and ordered the driver to take Tosin wherever she needed to go. Once Tosin was ready to go home, the driver would take her home, the fare covered by Aisa's generosity. The cab pulled away after Tosin had appreciated Aisa for her kindness, leaving Aisa to enter the hospital, her heart full of gratitude and anticipation for the future
Aisa's footsteps echoed through the sterile hospital corridor as she made her way to her mother's room. Her mind swirled with vivid images of her mother on her feet again, fully recovered and brimming with life. Lost in her hopeful daydream, the clamor of the hospital guests and patients faded into distant hum
Finally reaching the door, Aisa rapped gently before pushing it open. Inside, she found her father and younger sister weeping, their grief palpable in the somber air. Her eyes quickly scanned the room, coming to rest on her mother's bed. Though the bedsheet concealed the figure beneath, Aisa sensed the undeniable truth
"Father, what's going on here?" Aisa asked, her voice trembling with fear. "Why did they cover mother with that white cloth?"
Her father's grief rendered him speechless, his only response a slow, mournful nod
As the weight of her father's silent confirmation settled upon her, Aisa's knees buckled, and she wept uncontrollably. The world around her seemed to shatter, the cruel hand of reality tearing away the fragile hope that had sustained her
It's quite funny how people disvalue life. Life is priceless. If we lose money, we can regain it back. We can even gain more than what was lost. But if we lose a loved one, we can never get him or her back. Once someone dies and leaves this world, he or she is gone for good. Though material wealth may ebb and flow throughout one's existence, the love and companionship of a cherished soul, once extinguished, can never be regained. This is a sad truth that we humans keep avoiding. While money remains important, life itself is the most precious gift, a treasure to be cherished and never taken for granted
