Chapter 39 - CHAPTER 38

The atmosphere in the packed arena crackled with anticipation as two powerhouse teams readied themselves for a clash of titans. On one end of the court, the Charlie Queens resplendent in their signature pink pre-match warm-up kit, were immersed in a series of warm-up drills. Their sneakers squeaked against the polished floor, and their laughter echoed throughout the arena, a testament to their unwavering camaraderie

"Let's go, Queens! You've got this!" yelled an enthusiastic supporter from the stands

"Hey, I'm rooting for Tosin! She's got what it takes to dethrone the Victorious Varsity!" another spectator chimed in

At the other end of the court, their opponents, Wyse International High School, warmed up with a quiet intensity. Clad in their striking gold striped black pre-match warm-up kit, their movements were calculated and precise, like a well-oiled machine. They were a team on a mission, their focus trained solely on the impending game

Amidst the ferry of activity, a figure in Wyse's gold striped black track suit made her way to the other end of the court where the Queens were warming up. Her gaze was fixed on one player – Oluwatosin Folasade

"Hey, you're Tosin, right?" the stranger inquired, her voice tinged with an air of confidence.

"Yeah, who are you?" Tosin asked, her curiosity piqued

"I'm Cynthia," the stranger replied, extending her hand for a handshake

"Cynthia, huh? Cynthia James, right?" Tosin asked, recognizing the name of her formidable opponent

Cynthia draped her arm around Tosin's neck in a seemingly friendly gesture, but her whisper sent a chill down Tosin's spine. "Hey, babe, I'd prefer if you didn't call me by my surname. Just call me Cynthia"

Tosin nodded in agreement, unaware of where the conversation was headed. "Alright, understood. How can I help you?"

Cynthia's lips curled into a smirk as she continued. "I've heard great things about you, Tosin. I was looking forward to facing you on the court"

"Well, thanks. I'm honoured by your words," Tosin replied, trying to maintain her composure

"However," Cynthia pressed on, "you lost to that self-centered Victoria, despite having a commanding lead at half-time. Not to mention that I beat the very same Victoria last year. Does this mean I won't have fun today?"

Tosin's brows furrowed in confusion, "What are you trying to say?"

Cynthia's voice took on an introspective tone. "Is there a way to declare that I'm strong without being accused of arrogance? I'm searching for a worthy opponent, but at this point, I might give up soon. I thought I'd find another me, but is that even possible? I have been asking 1 simple question for a while now. WHO CAN STOP ME?"

Tosin's eyes widened, confusion etched on her face. "Huh?"

Cynthia chuckled; her expression enigmatic. "Well, don't let it get to you. I look forward to our duel. Interestingly, we're both power forwards. Let's have some fun today"

With that, Cynthia walked away, leaving Tosin perplexed

As the two teams warmed up, the crowd's excitement grew, their chatter and applause swelling to a deafening crescendo. The Queens and The Wyse were about to clash in a battle of skill, strategy, and determination. The question on everyone's mind was; which team would emerge victorious

As the warm-up concluded, the two teams dispersed, each returning to their respective locker rooms. Within the confines of the Queens' quarters, a tense silence permeated the air. Team members sought solace in their individual pre-game rituals, whether it be losing themselves in music, quiet meditation or novels

With a mere fifteen minutes remaining until tip-off, the Queens' focus sharpened. Dropping their personal effects in their bags, they emerged from the locker room, their expressions stony and resolute

Mrs. Lawal's voice rang out in the noisy arena, "Tosin, Oluchi, Mercy, Shalom, and Eno," she announced with authority, "you will form our starting line-up today." A chorus of affirmation rose from the team, each member eager to embrace their roles on the court

"Tolu," Mrs. Lawal continued, "be ready to join the game at any moment." A firm nod from Tolu confirmed her preparedness

"Alright, Queens," Mrs. Lawal declared, her eyes surveying the determined faces of her team. "Let's show them what we're made of." The air reverberated with a resounding chorus of agreement as the Queens steeled themselves for the battle ahead

As the Queens gathered for one final huddle, a disconcerted sight caught their attention. Tosin, their fearless captain, appeared lost in a world of her own, her gaze distant and troubled

"Captain, come on!" Chioma urged, her concern evident in her tone. However, Tosin remained unresponsive, her mind seemingly elsewhere. This unexpected behaviour sent a ripple of unease through the team, their eyes turning to Mrs. Lawal, who shared their mounting concern

It was Shalom's gentle tap on Tosin's shoulder that finally jolted her back to the presence, a look of confusion and surprise flitting across her face. "Wh… What is it?" she stammered; her voice uncharacteristically shaky

"We are waiting for you to lead the way, Captain," Shalom replied, her gaze a blend of concern and reassurance

"Oh, sorry," Tosin managed, forcing a strained chuckle that did little to ease the tension in the air

"Are you okay?" Shalom pressed; her brow furrowed in worry

"Yeah, I'm fine," Tosin insisted, though the unease in her eyes betrayed her words

Despite Tosin's' reassurance, Mrs. Lawal knew something was amiss. As Tosin joined the huddle, her forced smile did little to quell the concern that had taken root amongst her teammates

Tosin yelled. "3… 2… 1… Charlie Queens! Fight!"

The Queens' rallying cry "YEAH!" echoed through the arena, punctuated by their loyal supporters. However, the omission of Tosin's signature line was not lost on her teammates, each one sharing a glance of apprehension as they wondered what could be troubling their once-confident captain

Amidst the anticipation of the upcoming battle, an enigmatic figure emerged from the shadows of the stands. Clad in an attire that exude an air of mystery, Mrs. Parker watched the scene with a keen interest, her lips curling into a satisfied smile as she observed the player who had piqued her interest

"Now then, Tosin," she muttered, her voice laced with a blend of anticipation and challenge, "show me what you've got"

The highly anticipated Christmas Champions Cup first round match between Wyze International High School and Charlie Queens Academy commenced with an announcement from the game official. The players from both teams assembled on the court, bowing to one another in a display of sportsmanship as they wished each other a good game

After the brief exchange, the athletes took their respective positions on the court. The referee tossed the ball high up into the air, the shrill sound of the whistle piercing the air as both centers, Eno and Zainab, leaped into the air to gain control. With a swift tap of the ball, Eno managed to direct it towards Oluchi, the Queens' point guard

"Let's get the first points!" Oluchi instructed her teammates, hoping to gain complete control of the game. However, Success, Wyse's point guard, had other plans as she swiftly stole the ball from Oluchi

"You fell for it," Success taunted, her eyes locked on Oluchi's irritated expression. Exploiting the Queens' lapse in defense, Success capitalized on the opportunity and executed a one-handed slam dunk, scoring the first points of the game

As soon as Success landed, she turned her attention to Oluchi once more, "Your team's attack pattern is predictable when you're on the court. Get the tip-off, and launch a fast attack – it's the Queens' signature move. Stopping you guys was easier than I expected. You call yourself a point guard, right? Try to be more unpredictable even if a little." She criticized. "It would've been more challenging if that young point guard, Chioma, was starting instead."

Success' words struck a nerve, causing Oluchi's anger to mount. "Eno, pass me the ball," she demanded through gritted teeth

Eno couldn't help but smile at Oluchi's fiery determination. "You're ready to go?" she inquired

"She needs to be taught a lesson," Oluchi declared, her frustration evident

With the ball back in the Queens' possession, Oluchi led the attack down the court. However, her advance was halted by Success, who seemed ready to stop her every move

"Why do I keep encountering annoying players?" Oluchi pondered, her irritation growing with each passing moment

"Oh, thank you," Success retorted with a laugh

"That's not a compliment!" Oluchi snapped; her competitive spirit fueled by Success' taunts

Determined to regain control, Oluchi managed to dribble past Success, only to be halted by Nene, Wyse's shooting guard. Seizing the opportunity, Success tapped the ball from behind, forcing Oluchi's second turnover of the game

Nene swiftly collected the loose ball, tossing a pass towards Success as she charged towards the basket. Just as it seemed Success would score once more, Oluchi managed to block her advance

"I won't allow them to capitalize on my mistake again," Oluchi resolved, her determination unwavering

In an unexpected turn of events, Success tossed the ball towards Nene, who caught it effortlessly

"Nice pass, Success," Nene praised Success with a smile, before unleashing a precise three-pointer jump-shot. The ball soared through the air, ultimately finding its mark as it swished through the hoop, much to the delight of the Wyse supporters

The echo of Mrs. Lawal's voice reverberated throughout the arena, her urgent tone cutting through the noise of the game as she stood from the bench. "Oluchi! Oluchi!! Oluchi!!!" she called; her eyes locked on the player

Hearing her name, Oluchi turned towards her coach, momentarily distracted from the action on the court.

"Calm down!" Mrs. Lawal instructed, her hands making a calming gesture to emphasize her words

As play resumed, the Queens found themselves in possession of the ball, with Oluchi leading the attack. Success, Wyse's point guard, however, halted her advance, looking to stop her for a third time. "Why do you look so serious? Go easy on us, would you" she said, flashing a taunting smile

Unfazed by the provocation, Oluchi returned a confident smile. "I don't intend to do that," she replied, her resolve unwavering

Bouncing the ball rhythmically, Oluchi began to strategize, her analytical mind dissecting her opponents' strengths and weaknesses. The looming challenge of the Christmas Champions Cup weighed heavily on her thoughts, with Wyse proving a formidable adversary. "Wyse International High School… how strong are they really? They could beat us even without Cynthia James. And yet we still have Cynthia James to worry about. The Victorious Varsity won't let anyone to overthrow them easily. Winning the CCC is harder than I expected"

A deep sigh escaped Oluchi's lips as she centered herself, a sense of calm settling over her. Mrs. Lawal, noticing the change in her player's demeanor, breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank God she's finally calm," she murmured, her eyes never leaving the court

Success continued her relentless defense, looking to steal the ball from Oluchi yet again. "If you're not coming, then I'll take the ball!" she said

Driving past Success, Oluchi found herself facing a double-team defense from Nene and Ruth. "A double-team?" she questioned irritably

"No, wrong. It's a triple-team!" Success said, trying to tap the ball from behind. Anticipating the move, Oluchi swiftly passed the ball to Mercy

"Nice pass, Oluchi," Mercy commended, capitalizing on space that was created by the triple-team defense from Nene, Ruth, and Success and unleashing a three-pointer. The ball soared through the air, and landed in the hoop for a satisfying swish that sent the crowd in a deafening uproar. The Queens exchanged high-fives, their unwavering camaraderie and determination shining through as the game continues to intensify

The game continued, with Wyse now in possession of the ball. Success led the charge only to be halted by Oluchi's determined defense. Without hesitation, Oluchi passed the ball to Ruth, eliciting a surprised smile from Success

"Is something wrong?" Oluchi asked, a smirk playing at her lips

"I just thought it was time to let our small forward take charge," Success replied, matching Oluchi's grin

As Ruth received the ball, she found herself facing Shalom's relentless defense.

"It seems like your teammates are counting on you," Shalom observed, her eyes locked on the ball

"I'm dependable, right?" Ruth quipped; her confidence unwavering

In a display of skill, Ruth executed a series of crossovers, dribbling the ball between her legs with practiced precision. Shalom's shock was palpable as Ruth breezed past her, leaving her in the dust

"What?" Shalom exclaimed, disbelief colouring her voice

With Eno as the last line of defense, she moved in to help stop Ruth, leaving Zainab unguarded under the hoop. Seizing the opportunity, Ruth tossed the ball high into the air, meeting the hands of the soaring Zainab, who executed a powerful alley-oop slam dunk that sent the crowd into a frenzy

The game continued, and the Queens found themselves in possession of the ball once more. With Oluchi leading the attack, the team advanced towards the hoop. Success, ever-vigilant, attempted to disrupt Oluchi's momentum, but was caught off guard when Oluchi skillfully tossed the ball high into the air

"What?" Success exclaimed, her face registering surprise as Oluchi allowed herself a satisfied grin

Eno, seizing opportunity, leaped into the air to intercept the airborne pass from Oluchi. Mustering all her strength, Eno attempted an alley-oop slam dunk. However, her efforts were thwarted by Zainab's swift block, leaving the Queens' center momentarily stunned

Ruth, quick on her feet, snagged the rebound and passed the ball to Success, prompting the Queens to retreat in anticipation of an imminent fast break attack

"Don't be fooled by flashy tactics," Success chided as she slowly closed in on Oluchi. "We don't need to rely on conventional strategies to defeat the likes of you,"

"What are you implying?" Oluchi questioned, her frustration mounting

"Forget I said anything." Success replied with a shrug. "You are a skilled player, Oluchi, but that alone won't guarantee your victory today. You will understand eventually"

Bouncing the ball rhythmically, Success maintained eye contact with Oluchi

"You certainly don't mince words when you want to hurt someone, do you?" Oluchi retorted; her irritation evident

"I didn't mean to upset you," Success admitted, "I was just being honest. You'll come to understand my perspective soon enough."

As Success sent the ball sailing through the air, Oluchi tracked its trajectory with a growing sense of dread. The moment she realized who the intended recipient was, her eyes widened in fear

The ball landed securely in Cynthia James' hands, a confident smile playing at her lips

"Watch out, Tosin!" Oluchi called out urgently. "It's Cynthia James!"

Tosin steeled herself, mentally rehearsing her plan to stop Cynthia. However, Cynthia's lightning-speed reflexes left Tosin unable to react as Cynthia deftly dribbled past her, executing a smooth and effortless layup that sent the ball swishing into the hoop

"What you're witnessing isn't a matter of conventional tactics," Success declared, her voice ringing out over the stunned silence. "It's the difference in skill"
