They were on the balcony just outside the lake house, the wooden floor smooth and warm underfoot.
The railing ran along the edge and beyond it the full view opened up.
The lake stretched out ahead, flat and dark, the moonlight sitting on the surface in one long broken line.
There was a boat dock extended from the shoreline below, pale in the silver light, the water lapping quietly against the posts.
Trees lined the far bank. Fireflies moved in slow pulses near the treeline.
The air smelled like water and pine.
Elena had both hands on the railing looking out at the lake.
She turned her head and looked at him over her shoulder.
"When you said change position," she said, "I thought you meant on the couch."
Liam looked at the lake. Then at her. "I just survived a poisoning. I feel like connecting with nature."
Elena stared at him. "That is the stupidest reason I have ever heard."
"I know."
"I'm not going to lie," she said. "I'm actually looking forward to this."
