Chapter 9 - Beneath the Surface

Seo Jae-han's Penthouse – Early Morning

The blinds were still drawn, letting in only thin slits of gray dawn. Secretary Min stood before Jae-han's desk, a slim file in hand.

"This is everything I could find on Kang Ha-rin," she said.

Jae-han flipped through the pages—academic records, press clippings, photographs from charity events. All immaculate. All public.

"You're telling me this is her entire life?" His tone was flat.

Min's gaze didn't waver. "At least the part she wants the world to see. There are… gaps."

"What kind of gaps?"

"Before twenty-three, the trail is faint. Sanitized. As if someone went back and cleaned it." She hesitated. "There's also a registry entry for a sibling. Male. No name, no image. Access is locked under high clearance."

Jae-han closed the file slowly. "People erase what they can't afford others to know."

A knock on the door pulled him from the thought.

Ryu Chan-woo stepped inside, dressed sharp but carrying the air of someone who didn't bother hiding his curiosity. "Min said you were looking into someone."

Jae-han didn't answer immediately. He poured himself a slow measure of whiskey, the clink of ice filling the silence.

Chan-woo leaned against the desk. "Kang Ha-rin, isn't it?"

Jae-han's gaze flicked up, unreadable.

"Why her?" Chan-woo pressed. "She's beautiful, yes, but you don't chase beauty. You chase leverage."

Jae-han set the glass down, amber catching the dim light. "Some people walk into a room and every piece on the board shifts. I want to know why."

"And if you find out?"

A faint smile touched Jae-han's lips. "Then I'll decide whether she's a threat… or an opportunity."

Chan-woo smirked faintly, straightening from the desk. "Speaking of rooms you can't ignore—there's a party tonight. You can't skip this one."

Jae-han's brow arched. "Why?"

"A close friend from my university days just flew in," Chan-woo said casually, but the glint in his eyes hinted at more. "You'll see."

That Evening – The Orchid Lounge

The lounge glowed like molten gold, crystal chandeliers scattering light across marble floors. The scent of champagne and expensive perfume mingled with low jazz from the corner stage.

Jae-han and Chan-woo stepped inside together, their presence drawing subtle glances from the crowd. Waiters in black moved like shadows, trays balanced effortlessly.

Chan-woo navigated the room with the ease of someone born to it, pausing to exchange brief handshakes and murmured greetings.

"I didn't realize this was one of those nights," Jae-han remarked, scanning the room.

"It's always one of those nights," Chan-woo said lightly, accepting a glass of champagne from a passing waiter. "But tonight's special."

His gaze flicked toward the entrance, a slow smile curving his mouth.

Jae-han followed the look, his expression unreadable as the crowd subtly shifted—making space for someone they hadn't seen yet.

The hum of conversation dipped, just slightly, as if the air itself was pausing in expectation.

And then—
