Chapter 24 - An Unfamiliar Affection

For a brief second, the world around them seemed to fall silent, as if even the air itself had paused to witness what had just happened. Tara stood impossibly close to Chandraveer, her body still held within his grasp, his arms firm around her as though he had pulled her in without realizing how tightly he had done so.

Neither of them moved.

Neither spoke.

It wasn't just an accident anymore—it was a moment that lingered longer than it should have.

Then, suddenly, Chandraveer snapped back to reality.

Chandraveer: My apologies… that was completely unintentional. I acted without thinking and overstepped my bounds. Please forgive me for that.

He immediately pulled himself away, releasing her as though the realization itself had forced his body to retreat. His expression regained its usual composure, but the brief hesitation before it settled revealed that even he had not been entirely unaffected.

Tara, however, didn't respond right away.

She simply stood there, her eyes fixed on him, as if she had yet to return from that suspended moment. Her mind lagged behind her body, still trying to process what had just occurred.

Then—

She blinked.

Reality returned.

Tara: N-No, Your Majesty… it was my fault. I stepped forward without thinking, and you only reacted to stop me. There is nothing for you to apologize for.

Chandraveer studied her for a brief moment before shaking his head slightly, his tone calm but firm.

Chandraveer: No, I should be the one asking for forgiveness. Do not trouble yourself over this matter any further.

Tara exhaled softly, a breath she hadn't realized she had been holding, her shoulders relaxing ever so slightly as the tension eased.

From the side, however—

Aryav and Kavya had witnessed everything.

Every second.

Every detail.

And while they remained outwardly silent, their expressions told a completely different story. Their eyes were wide, their thoughts racing, and it took every ounce of restraint for them not to react on the spot.

Chandraveer, now fully composed once again, turned slightly away, restoring the distance that had momentarily vanished.

Chandraveer: Your work here is complete. You may return to your duties.

That was all the permission Aryav and Kavya needed.

Aryav: Of course, Your Majesty.

Kavya: We shall take our leave.

Before Tara could even gather herself properly, the two of them rushed forward, grabbing her from either side.

Tara: Wait—what are you doing!?

They didn't answer.

They simply dragged her out.

Scene Shift – Ministry Office

The moment they entered, the doors were shut with urgency. Windows were closed, locks clicked into place, and every possible opening was sealed as if they were guarding a secret of the highest importance.

Then—

Without warning—

They threw Tara onto the couch.

Tara: Ow! What the hell are you two doing!?

Kavya stepped forward immediately, her expression a mix of disbelief and excitement, as if she could barely contain herself.

Kavya: Devi! Did you truly not realize what just happened back there, or are you pretending not to understand?

Tara blinked, tilting her head slightly as though genuinely thinking about it.

Tara: We discovered the mystery of the hidden pavilion…? That seems like the most important outcome of today.

Kavya froze for a second.

Then snapped.

Kavya: NOT THAT!

She pointed at Tara dramatically, her frustration rising.

Kavya: The moment! The… the scene that just happened between you and His Majesty!

Tara turned her face away slightly, maintaining her act.

Tara: What scene are you even talking about?

Aryav stepped in, clearly unable to hold back any longer.

Aryav: You—and the Emperor—standing that close, and then he just—

Tara immediately cut him off.

Tara: HEY! That was an accident! Stop exaggerating things and making it sound like something it wasn't!

Aryav and Kavya slowly turned toward each other.

They said nothing at first.

Then, as if sharing the exact same thought, they turned their backs to Tara and began whispering quietly.

Kavya: Did you see how close they were standing?

Aryav: Close? She was practically in his arms like—

Kavya: And His Majesty didn't even move immediately…

A small laugh escaped them.

Tara's face flushed instantly.

Tara: STOP IT!!

She grabbed a cushion and threw it at them in frustration.

Tara: I said stop imagining things that never happened!

Aryav dodged it easily, grinning.

Aryav: We're not imagining anything, Devi. We saw it with our own eyes.

Kavya crossed her arms, smirking slightly.

Kavya: You might want to be more careful next time… or maybe not, if such "accidents" keep happening.

Tara stood up immediately, completely flustered.

Tara: KAVYA!!

Her voice echoed through the room, filled with embarrassment she could no longer hide.

The room was still filled with Tara's embarrassment echoing through the walls, while Aryav and Kavya struggled—and failed—to contain their laughter.

Then—

The door burst open.

Malini stood at the entrance, slightly bent forward, breathing heavily as she tried to catch her breath. It was clear she had been running, yet still couldn't keep up with the chaos that had already unfolded ahead of her.

Malini: What in the world are you all running for!? I have been chasing you across half the corridor, and not one of you thought to stop and explain yourselves!

She stepped inside, still catching her breath, her expression shifting from frustration to curiosity as she took in the scene before her.

Tara sitting on the couch—

Clearly flustered.

Aryav and Kavya—

Barely holding themselves together.

Tara crossed her arms, still annoyed.

Tara: They're being unnecessarily irritating, that's all. There is nothing worth making such a scene over.

Malini raised an eyebrow, her gaze slowly moving from Tara to Aryav and Kavya, who immediately tried—and failed—to look innocent.

A knowing smile began to form.

Malini: Oh, I don't need anyone to explain it to me. I can already tell what must have happened here.

A pause.

Her smile deepened.

Malini: Though… I must admit, it was quite a delightful moment to witness. Seeing you and His Majesty standing so… closely.

Her tone carried a teasing edge, and the slight smirk on her face made it even worse.

Tara froze.

Then exploded.

Tara: YOU TOO NOW?!

Aryav and Kavya lost it completely.

Aryav: See!? Even she noticed!

Kavya: It wasn't just us imagining things!

Their laughter filled the room, uncontrolled and merciless.

At that moment—

Satyadhara finally entered, slightly behind Malini.

He stopped at the doorway.

Took a deep breath.

And exhaled heavily.

Satyadhara: I leave all of you alone for a short while, and somehow the entire palace turns into chaos… I don't even want to know what happened this time.

A small movement stirred near him.

One of the puppies peeked out slightly—

Followed by another—

Then another.

Satyadhara closed his eyes briefly, as if accepting his fate.

Satyadhara: And on top of that, I am still dealing with these little disasters, which none of you seem to remember are still my responsibility.

Scene – Outside the Hidden Pavilion

The garden outside the hidden pavilion had fallen into a quiet stillness, as if the chaos from moments ago had never existed. A soft breeze moved through the trees, and the water below reflected the fading light of the sky. Chandraveer stood near the edge, looking down in silence, his posture steady—but his mind far from composed.

His thoughts had drifted back without permission, replaying that moment again and again. The sudden pull, the closeness, the warmth that lingered longer than it should have. It wasn't just a memory—it felt almost physical, as if his body refused to forget it. For a brief moment, his expression softened, and without realizing it, a faint smile appeared on his face.

Lost in that thought, he didn't hear the footsteps approaching him.

Nayan: Your Majesty?

There was no response.

Nayan stepped closer, noticing the unusual stillness, the silence—and most of all, that faint smile that did not belong to the emperor he knew.

Nayan: Your Majesty.

Chandraveer snapped back to reality, his expression tightening instantly as he turned.

Chandraveer: Ah—yes? What is it?

Nayan observed him for a moment, clearly amused.

Nayan: I have been calling you for quite some time. We should return to your office. There are matters awaiting your attention.

Chandraveer straightened himself, regaining his usual composure.

Chandraveer: Yes… of course. I was just thinking about a few things.

Nayan tilted his head slightly, a faint smirk forming.

Nayan: A few things? From the look on your face just now, it did not seem like "a few things." It looked rather… specific.

Chandraveer's expression stiffened.

Nayan: In fact, I would say you were thinking about a certain moment… with a certain lady.

A quiet chuckle escaped him.

Nayan: Hehe.

Chandraveer turned sharply, clearly flustered.

Chandraveer: Wha—What are you talking about!? That was clearly an accident. My body simply reacted on its own. It was nothing more than a reflex.

Nayan's smile widened slightly, enjoying the reaction.

Nayan: A reflex, you say? I do not recall reflexes involving pulling someone so close and holding them there longer than necessary.

The words hit harder than expected.

Chandraveer: Wha—WHAT do you mean holding!? I did no such thing!

Nayan let out a soft laugh, raising his hands slightly as if backing off.

Nayan: Very well, Your Majesty. If that is what you believe, I shall not argue further.

There was a brief pause before his tone shifted, becoming more grounded.

Nayan: Though, I would advise you to be careful. Unnecessary affection, even accidental, can lead to complications—especially for someone in your position.

Chandraveer's expression hardened slightly.

Nayan: You are the emperor. Your relationships are not merely personal matters. They carry weight beyond yourself. You are expected to form alliances, to marry within royal circles—queens, princesses, unions that strengthen the empire.

Chandraveer looked away, clearly unwilling to entertain the thought.

Chandraveer: Whatever. I was not even thinking about what you are suggesting anyway.

His response came too quickly, too defensively.

Nayan said nothing more.

He simply watched him for a moment—

And smiled to himself.

Because for the first time, the emperor had reacted.

And that alone was enough.

Scene – Palace Corridor

The long palace corridor stretched ahead, lined with tall pillars and guards standing in disciplined silence as Chandraveer walked through with his convoy. His steps were steady, measured—as always—but his mind was far from the present moment.

Nayan walked beside him, occasionally glancing at him, noticing the unusual silence. But Chandraveer didn't speak.

He was thinking.

Deeply.

Chandraveer: Since the day I was born… I was never allowed to live like others.

His gaze remained forward, but his thoughts drifted inward.

Chandraveer: No friends. No play. No meaningless conversations. No freedom to act without purpose.

The corridor passed by him, unnoticed.

Chandraveer: Everything that shapes a normal childhood… was taken away from me before I could even understand it.

A faint pause.

Chandraveer: I was always curious about others… how they lived, how they spoke so freely… how they laughed without fear.

His expression hardened slightly.

Chandraveer: But it always felt like the moment I tried to get closer… they moved further away.

A memory surfaced.

Cold.

Unforgiving.

Chandraveer: Anyone who approached me without reason… without permission…

A brief silence.

Chandraveer: …was executed.

His steps did not slow.

Chandraveer: My mother ensured that.

No anger.

No rebellion.

Just acceptance.

Chandraveer: She taught me everything. Discipline. Authority. Control. I must respect her decisions.

Another pause.

Slightly longer.

Chandraveer: But now…

His eyes narrowed faintly.

Chandraveer: I am no longer a child.

A subtle shift in his tone.

Chandraveer: I am a grown man.

Another step.

Chandraveer: And the emperor.

Then—

That memory returned again.

Stronger this time.

Chandraveer: That moment…

A faint smile began to form.

Chandraveer: It was… probably the first time I have ever been that close to a woman.

A pause.

Chandraveer: Other than my mother… and my sister…

He exhaled lightly.

Almost amused.

Chandraveer: Hm.

A soft chuckle escaped him.

Chandraveer: Her presence was… unexpectedly gentle.

For a moment—

He allowed himself to linger in that thought.

Then suddenly—

He snapped himself out of it.

Chandraveer: What am I thinking?

His expression tightened again.

Chandraveer: This is unnecessary. I should not allow myself to develop any kind of personal attachment.

A pause.

Chandraveer: My responsibilities are greater than such distractions. If I am to form any bond, it must be for the empire… with royal families, alliances, purpose.

But—

Another thought interrupted him.

Chandraveer: Still…

He slowed slightly.

Chandraveer: She did seem… startled.

A flicker of concern.

Chandraveer: Perhaps even uncomfortable.

A brief silence.

Chandraveer: It would not be improper… to formally apologize.

His tone shifted—more resolved now.

Chandraveer: Yes… I should go and meet her. At the very least, I can offer an apology.

A small pause.

Chandraveer: Perhaps… even a gesture to make up for it.

His steps continued.

But now—

There was direction behind them.

He turned his head slightly toward Nayan.

Chandraveer: Nayan, where is Tara's office?

Nayan immediately looked at him, clearly surprised by the sudden question.

Nayan: Her office? What exactly are you planning to do?

Chandraveer didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

A faint smile appeared on his face.

Chandraveer: Nothing.

A small pause.

Chandraveer: Just something I need to take care of.

Nayan narrowed his eyes slightly, unconvinced.

But Chandraveer simply walked forward.

Still smiling.

Scene – Tara's Office

The room was filled with suppressed laughter.

Aryav, Kavya, and Malini stood in one corner, whispering and barely holding themselves together as they kept revisiting the moment again and again, each version sounding worse than the last. Their shoulders shook, their voices broke, and every attempt to stay quiet failed within seconds.

Tara stood opposite them, arms crossed, face burning with anger and embarrassment, glaring at them as if she might throw the entire table this time.

Tara: I am warning you all for the last time—stop talking about it or I will make sure none of you speak for the rest of the day!

Aryav: We are not even saying anything now, Devi.

Kavya: Yes, we are simply… recalling events.

Malini: And appreciating what we witnessed.

They burst into laughter again.

Tara: You three are impossible!

At the side, Satyadhara sat down, exhausted, trying to catch his breath. The puppies were hidden again, but his expression was uneasy, his instincts quietly alert.

Satyadhara: …Something is about to happen.

No one listened.

Outside the Office

Chandraveer stood just outside the door, having arrived without announcement.

From inside, the laughter was clearly audible.

Along with Tara's voice—annoyed, flustered.

He paused.

Chandraveer: …

He didn't need to think much.

He already understood.

A faint breath left him.

Then—

He stepped forward and pushed the door open.

Inside – Emperor Enters

The door opened.

Silence.

Everything froze.

For a split second, everyone stood still—caught completely off guard.

Then panic took over.

Aryav rushed to his desk.

Kavya grabbed scrolls.

Malini straightened her posture instantly.

Satyadhara jumped up as if struck.

Tara immediately sat down, grabbing documents and pretending to read with intense focus.

All together—

Aryav: Greetings, Your Majesty.

Kavya: Greetings, Your Majesty.

Malini: Greetings, Your Majesty.

Satyadhara: Greetings, Your Majesty.

Tara: Greetings, Your Majesty.

The room fell into disciplined silence.

Chandraveer walked forward calmly, his presence alone enough to restore order. His gaze swept across the room, taking in everything—the rushed movements, the forced composure, the lingering tension.

Then his eyes stopped on Tara.

Chandraveer: I would like to speak with Tara… in private.

Aryav: Of course, Your Majesty.

Kavya: We shall step outside immediately.

Malini: Please excuse us.

They moved quickly, dragging Satyadhara along.

Satyadhara: I was finally resting—

The door closed.

Inside – Apology Scene

The room grew quiet again.

Tara stood up slowly, still trying to regain composure.

Tara: Your Majesty… how may I assist you?

Chandraveer walked a few steps closer, his tone controlled, formal.

Chandraveer: I have come to address an incident that occurred earlier.

Tara froze slightly.

Chandraveer: My actions at that moment were improper. I acted without full awareness and may have caused you discomfort.

A pause.

Chandraveer: That was not my intention.

Another pause.

Chandraveer: I offer my apology.

Tara blinked, clearly not expecting this.

Tara: Your Majesty, that is not necessary. It was merely an accident. There is nothing for you to apologize for.

Chandraveer shook his head slightly.

Chandraveer: Whether intentional or not, the responsibility remains mine.

Then—

He reached for something and brought out a small, carefully preserved object.

There was a brief hesitation before he extended it toward her.

Chandraveer: I was informed that you study instruments and their patterns. This piece responds uniquely to sound vibrations. It may be of use to you.

Tara looked at it, surprised.

Tara: This is far too valuable. I cannot accept something like this for such a small matter.

Chandraveer: It is not for the incident alone.

A slight shift.

Chandraveer: It is also an acknowledgment of your capability.

Silence.

Tara slowly accepted it.

Tara: …Thank you, Your Majesty.

Chandraveer turned to leave.

He paused briefly.

Chandraveer: Do not concern yourself further about what happened.

He walked out.

Outside – Corridor (Chilling Moment)

Aryav, Kavya, and Malini stood a short distance away, whispering again, clearly trying to predict what was happening inside.

Kavya: What do you think he's saying?

Aryav: Maybe he's—

Their voices stopped.

Chandraveer had walked up to them.

Silently.

All three froze.

He looked at them.

One by one.

His expression—

Cold.

Unreadable.

Chandraveer: Do not annoy her.

A pause.

Chandraveer: And do not speak of that incident again.

The tone was calm.

But heavy.

Chandraveer: If I hear otherwise…

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

A chilling silence fell over them.

Their hearts felt like they had stopped.

Then—

Just as suddenly—

His expression changed.

A calm, composed face returned.

Chandraveer: Have a good day.

And he walked away.

They stood frozen.

Aryav: …

Kavya: …

Malini: …

None of them spoke.

Then—

They rushed back inside.

Inside – Chaos Returns

The door burst open.

Aryav: WHAT DID HE SAY!?

Kavya: WHAT DID HE GIVE YOU!?

Malini: SHOW US RIGHT NOW!

They surrounded Tara instantly.

Tara: All of you—get out!

Too late.

They were already leaning in.

And the chaos—

Returned.
