Chapter 1034 - The Reception at the Main Gate

The carriage advanced the last few meters of the winding and rocky road, breaking through the thick layer of gray fog that permanently surrounded the base of the gigantic tower. The sound of the heavy wooden wheels scraping against the loose gravel echoed muffled through the lonely gorge, announcing our arrival at the imposing landmark marking the transition between the outside world and the relentless domains of the dungeon. Through the vehicle's half-open window, I observed the colossal black stone structure that tore through the cloudy sky, rising like an impenetrable monolith erected by divine hands or ancestral forces forgotten by time. The atmosphere around it carried a palpable magical density, capable of subtly accelerating the heartbeat of any unsuspecting adventurer who dared to set foot in those surroundings without proper psychological and physical preparation.

Reflecting on the imposing nature of the place, I understood that the vigilance exercised at the entrances of great dungeons served not only to bar unprepared intruders, but also functioned as a natural filter to separate fools from true strategists. The tower demanded absolute respect on each of its levels, beginning with the main gate itself, where security was rigorously maintained by elite veterans tasked with monitoring the flow of entrances and exits. For a group that had already overcome thirty-five floors of pure horror and tactical complexity, that austere reception represented not an obstacle, but the formal ritual of reentry into the territory where our abilities would once again be put to the supreme test.

As soon as the carriage gently braked before the immense runic gate carved with reliefs of mythological creatures, I noticed the silhouette of a man standing guard directly beneath the main arch. He was an S-Rank veteran adventurer, whose reputation in combat and longevity in dungeons qualified him perfectly for the task of inspection and access control in that isolated area. He wore impeccable silver armor, without a single visible scratch, which attested to his extreme defensive skill, and casually rested a broad-bladed sword over his right shoulder, observing our approach with an analytical and perceptive gaze.

As soon as I opened the carriage door and set foot on the rocky ground, the veteran instantly straightened his posture, narrowing his eyes in our direction as a standard precaution against possible ambushes or disguised intruders. However, as soon as the light from the torch burning on the wall illuminated my face, the warrior's stern expression transformed into a mixture of respectful surprise and evident relief. He knew perfectly well the records of the few warriors capable of ascending beyond the thirtieth floor with their lives and operational consistency intact.

"Well, if it isn't Lord Takumi and his renowned squad," exclaimed the S-Rank guardian in a deep and firm voice, while delivering an impeccable military salute, slightly inclining his head as a sign of profound recognition. "I confess that I did not expect to see you returning so soon after the last prolonged incursion. The guild reports indicated that you would be managing your fiefs in the Kingdom of Vailor for at least a few more weeks."

"The administrative duties were properly taken care of with the cooperation of my team, allowing us to move up the schedule for our return to the tower," I replied with a cordial smile, approaching a few steps to shake the veteran's gloved hand in a gesture of mutual camaraderie. "It is good to see that the security of this gate remains in hands as competent and vigilant as yours, my dear fellow. Stability at the base is what gives us peace of mind to advance into the unknown."

"I appreciate the compliment, Takumi," the warrior replied with a discreet smile at the corner of his lips, relaxing his posture as he watched Liriel, Scarlet, Rai'kanna, Elara, Vespera, and Lyannis disembark from the carriage with the impeccable elegance and composure peculiar to them. "With an escort like that at your side, I imagine even the deepest floors must tremble in fear when they notice your approach. The guild has recorded small fluctuations in the mana of the upper floors over the past few days, which suggests that the difficulty level up there may have undergone some kind of recalibration generated by the dungeon system itself."

"Mana fluctuations are merely a sign that the environment is alive and reacting to our presence," Scarlet intervened with a challenging gleam in her crimson eyes, adjusting the sheath of her sword with a fluid and natural movement. "If the tower system thinks it is going to intimidate us with climatic variations or more aggressive monsters, it will certainly bitterly regret it when it tastes the edge of our blades."

The guardian let out a short and hearty laugh at the unwavering confidence displayed by the swordswoman, shaking his head in approval. "That is the attitude expected of an S-Rank elite squad. I have seen many promising groups arrive here trembling with fear after hearing rumors about the thirty-sixth floor and beyond, but you seem to be heading to a festive banquet instead of a deadly incursion."

"The secret is not underestimating the danger, but fully trusting in the strength of the bond we have built throughout every battle," Liriel pointed out in her serene and melodious voice, approaching with a stack of transit authorization scrolls that she politely extended to the guardian for the proper bureaucratic records. "Here are the official seals issued by the Vailor Chancellery, attesting to the legality of our expedition and our full responsibility for any collateral damage that may occur inside the structure during the clearing process."

The veteran carefully took the documents, gave the gleaming magical stamps a quick look, and returned them with an affirmative nod. "Everything is in perfect order, as always, Liriel. Your bureaucracy is as impeccable as the precision of your combat magic. Therefore, there is no reason whatsoever to hold the retinue any longer. The main gate is officially authorized for your passage."

While the enormous mechanism of ancestral gears began to turn with a deep and deafening metallic sound, gradually releasing the opening of the heavy runic door leading into the interior of the tower, I took the opportunity to exchange a few more words of courtesy with the guardian. We spoke briefly about the weather conditions in the neighboring mountains and the effectiveness of the new logistical support patrols we had implemented the previous month to ensure safe supplies for the independent adventurers operating on the lower floors. The exchange of information reinforced the importance of maintaining a solid communication network between the surface and the upper strata of the dungeon, ensuring that no strategic detail was neglected.

With the gate fully open, revealing the dark corridor illuminated by bluish magical torches that extended toward the intermediate floors, I looked back one last time to contemplate the vastness of the outside world before the tower's gloom completely enveloped us. My companions were already lining up in perfect tactical formation, breathing in sync and demonstrating absolute readiness to begin the ascent. I gave the guardian an affirmative nod, and he wished us good luck with a respectful wave, before we took the first decisive step across the threshold, entering with unwavering courage into the labyrinth of challenges that awaited us in the depths.
