Chapter 1036 - The Green Labyrinth

Crossing through the runic portal of the thirty-sixth floor enveloped our group in a gust of humid air densely charged with the exotic scent of crushed leaves, fresh moss, and millennia-old roots. As soon as the blinding light of the transition chamber completely dissipated, the rocky and austere landscape of the lower floors disappeared entirely, giving way to a vast and imposing underground forest whose colossal trees seemed to support the very ceiling of solid rock of the dungeon with their twisted trunks and dense canopies that blocked almost all external light. The ground beneath our boots was soft, covered by a thick layer of fallen leaves and low vegetation that muffled the sound of our footsteps, creating an atmosphere that was simultaneously magical, isolated, and filled with hidden dangers in the shadows of the dense vegetation.

Reflecting on the abrupt transition in scenery, I understood that the dungeon used the variation of ecosystems as a psychological and tactical tool to disorient careless adventurers. While the previous floors required combat in narrow corridors and stone chambers, this new sector relied on the vertical claustrophobia of the jungle, where visibility was severely limited by curtains of vines and light mists that emerged from the humid ground. This reality imposed an immediate change in our tactical posture, transforming exploration into a constant exercise of patience, meticulous observation, and careful reading of the magical signatures circulating throughout the green ecosystem.

"This place has an energy completely different from everything we have faced so far," Liriel murmured, adjusting her glasses and raising her left hand to conjure a spherical beam of light that floated gently above our heads, illuminating the canopies of the nearby trees. "The guild records indicate that the thirty-sixth floor functions as a living organic labyrinth, whose paths of vines and roots subtly change position whenever the tower's mana flow undergoes cyclical fluctuations. We need to record frequent visual landmarks to prevent us from walking in circles."

"A living labyrinth?" Scarlet repeated with a curious smile on her lips, while using the tip of her blade to move aside a thorny branch that partially blocked the path ahead of us. The swordswoman showed genuine enthusiasm in the face of the new challenge, keeping her senses perfectly synchronized with the environment. "That means the entire forest is trying to confuse us. I admit I prefer giant and fierce monsters that come straight at us over trees that decide to change places whenever we blink."

"Don't be fooled, Scarlet," Rai'kanna intervened, her beastly ears moving rapidly to catch the slightest sounds coming from the depths of the forest. The warrior wolf crouched down to inspect deep marks embedded in the bark of a colossal tree on the left. "The trees and bushes here not only change position, but also hide predators specialized in arboreal camouflage. These claws in the wood were left by medium-sized creatures that hunt in packs and attack by surprise from the treetops."

"Rai'kanna is absolutely right about the presence of aggressive fauna," Elara confirmed, preparing a small bottle of magical aromatic repellent that spread a soft silver mist around our group, neutralizing the natural smell of sweat and dispersing poisonous insects that prowled the vegetation. "This spray will ensure that we do not attract the attention of swarms of carnivorous wasps or flying leeches while we advance along the main path."

We advanced in a tight formation, with the vanguard led by Rai'kanna and Scarlet, while Vespera and Lyannis covered the side flanks, occasionally firing small sparks of magical light to reveal natural traps hidden beneath the carpet of dead leaves. The atmosphere of the forest was punctuated by strange and fascinating sounds: the metallic singing of translucent birds, the distant cracking of dry branches beneath the weight of invisible beings, and the constant whisper of the wind circulating through the canopies of the gigantic trees, creating a dark melody that accompanied our deep march toward the interior of the sector.

As we walked among the immense roots that snaked across the ground, Vespera analyzed the geometric patterns formed by the fluorescent mosses covering the trunks around us. "These mosses follow a spiral growth pattern that points directly toward the dungeon's magnetic north," the mage pointed out in her analytical and serene voice, pointing with her staff toward a series of plant formations on the rocks. "If we maintain our course following the clockwise direction of this spiral, we will drastically reduce the chances of falling into the spatial displacement traps created by the labyrinth."

"Excellent observation, Vespera," I praised, momentarily placing my hand on her shoulder as a sign of recognition for the practical usefulness of that empirical discovery. "The ability to read the natural signs of the environment is what differentiates a group of surviving adventurers from a truly legendary elite squad. Let us adjust our marching route according to this guideline."

After approximately two hours of constant progress through the dense vegetation, the first signs of native resistance began to emerge. A group of humanoid creatures made of petrified wood and thorny vines suddenly leaped down from atop an ancient tree, attempting to intercept our passage with pointed stakes made from hardened branches. The attack was sudden and aggressive, but our tactical readiness prevented any unpleasant surprise. With a fluid and perfectly synchronized movement, Scarlet and Rai'kanna advanced into close-quarters combat, delivering precise cuts that shattered the wooden carapaces of the creatures within seconds.

The rear guard, composed of Liriel, Elara, and the assistant, provided immediate magical support, launching beams of contained fire that incinerated the plant remains before they could release paralyzing spores into the air. The impeccable synergy of our group transformed what could have been a dangerous ambush into a quick and clean victory, reaffirming the strength of our unity in the face of the constant dangers of the Green Labyrinth.

As the afternoon progressed and the light filtering through the canopies began to take on a reddish hue of underground twilight, we decided to set up a temporary camp in a natural clearing protected by circular rock formations. The surrounding environment remained mysterious and challenging, but the certainty that we were advancing firmly toward our objectives brought a comforting peace to everyone's hearts, preparing us spiritually for the long days of exploration that still awaited us in the depths of that ancient forest.
