Chapter 1040 - The Dark Swamp

Overcoming the rocky mountain ranges and cutting winds of the thirty-seventh floor paved the way for a rapid and methodical transition through the underground galleries of the thirty-eighth level, a vast sector characterized by formations of luminescent crystals that emitted a continuous sky-blue light. Without encountering significant resistance along this intermediate stretch, our march continued at a steady pace until we reached the threshold of the thirty-ninth floor. As soon as we crossed the corresponding runic portal, the cold radiance of the crystals was replaced by a suffocating gloom, and the dry mountain air gave way to dense, heavy humidity filled with sulfurous vapors. We were now in an immense underground swamp, where the solid basalt rock beneath us was submerged beneath thick layers of black sludge, stagnant water, and toxic mists that obscured the horizon.

Reflecting on the abrupt change of scenery, I understood that the dungeon exerted a profound psychological control over adventurers through the brutal alternation of biomes. Going from open and well-ventilated cliffs to a claustrophobic and stifling swamp required an immediate readjustment of the senses and tactical posture. Every step taken there had to be calculated to the millimeter to avoid sinking into pockets of corrosive mud or stepping into natural traps camouflaged by the dark waters. I kept my attention focused on Liriel's guidance and the humidity readings Elara was taking in real time, knowing that caution was the only effective shield against the invisible dangers of that putrid ecosystem.

"The acidity level of this swamp is considerably higher than that recorded in the guild's traditional compendiums," Elara warned in an analytical and firm tone of voice, while adjusting the clasps of her potion belt and handing each of us a small vial of neutralizing extract. "The low-lying mist contains toxic vapors capable of irritating the respiratory tract and slowly corroding ordinary leather protections if we do not maintain an active purification magic barrier around our bodies. Take this preventive tonic before we take another step toward the sludge."

"Thank you for the preventive care, Elara," I replied, accepting the vial and drinking the herbal-tasting liquid that immediately dispelled any sensation of tightness in my chest caused by the stale air. I looked at the group and continued firmly: "Make sure the arcane protection seals on your boots and cloaks are firmly activated. We cannot allow the miasma of this swamp to compromise our mobility during a possible ambush."

"My boots are already waterproofed with a light flotation spell that reduced my effective weight on the mud," Scarlet commented with a confident smile, testing the ground with the tip of her metal-covered boot before advancing a few centimeters. The swordswoman kept her crimson eyes attentive to the dark surface of the stagnant waters, where gas bubbles erupted sporadically. "I admit the smell here isn't the most pleasant, somewhat reminiscent of the bottom of a neglected sink, but I guarantee that no creature from the sludge will ruin our pace."

"Scarlet is right about the need to keep our steps light," Rai'kanna interjected, her beastly ears remaining raised and attentive to the slightest muffled noises echoing through the mist. The wolf warrior discreetly crouched to examine drag marks left in the mud near a cluster of giant reeds. "My instincts indicate that this sector is inhabited by large amphibious beasts that use the camouflage of the sludge to ambush inattentive prey. There are recent footprints of quadrupedal creatures with webbed toes just a few meters from here."

"Amphibious creatures and corrosive sludge form the classic defensive combination of the tower's swamp floors," Vespera added, raising the staff whose top radiated a soft golden light that cut through the purplish mist around us. "I can conjure a thermal dispersion dome to drive away the densest vapors within a radius of ten meters, ensuring that our visibility is not completely compromised if we are surrounded."

"Excellent initiative, Vespera," I took the opportunity to point out, indicating the direction we should follow based on the coordinates Liriel had plotted on the portable magical map. "Let's maintain a compact formation: Rai'kanna and Scarlet at the vanguard to detect traps and deep mud pits; Vespera and Lyannis covering the side flanks with beams of illumination and containment; and Liriel, Elara, and the assistant providing medical support and covering the rear. We will march calmly, but with unwavering determination."

Progressing through the dark swamp became a journey of patience and tactical rigor. The scenery around us was desolate and silent, broken only by the bubbling sound of gas escaping from the sludge and the constant dripping of moisture coming from the rocky ceiling concealed by the mist. The twisted, leafless trees emerging from the dark waters seemed like skeletal arms stretched toward us, creating a ghostly atmosphere that tested the mental serenity of any explorer. However, the unbreakable unity of our squad transformed the oppression of the environment into nothing more than an insignificant detail in the face of our collective determination.

As we advanced along the banks of a stagnant-water channel, the apparent calm was abruptly shattered. The sludge ahead of us began to churn violently, breaking the surface with a deafening sucking sound, while dozens of humanoid creatures formed from compacted mud, putrefied algae, and fossilized bones emerged simultaneously to block our path. They were the swamp sentinels, intermediate-level monsters whose bodies absorbed ordinary physical impacts and whose attacks released acidic spores capable of corroding armor within seconds.

"Frontal and lateral ambush!" Lyannis warned with a firm shout, reacting with instant speed as she drew her secondary blade and conjured a blast of cutting wind that dispersed part of the acidic mist released by the creatures. "They're trying to surround us using the mud as cover."

"No room for retreat!" I ordered in a calm voice, channeling pure mana to coat my sword in an intense golden glow that illuminated the darkness of the swamp. "Execute the coordinated dispersion maneuver!"

Our squad's counterattack was a true demonstration of tactical mastery. Scarlet and Rai'kanna advanced with firm steps over the sludge stabilized by the flotation spells, delivering synchronized strikes that shattered the mud carapaces of the main monsters with surgical precision. At the same time, Vespera and Lyannis released spheres of concentrated fire that evaporated the moisture around the secondary creatures, neutralizing the acid before it could reach our positions. Liriel and Elara kept the protective barriers active, ensuring that not a trace of toxic miasma penetrated our formation.

Within a few minutes, the skirmish came to an end. The shapeless remains of the creatures dissolved into the dark waters, leaving behind only a few crystallized mana cores that Liriel methodically collected with her spatial bag. After confirming that all the members were unharmed and that the formation remained intact, we took a brief pause to catch our breath and check our potion consumption. The quick and clean victory once again reinforced the harmony and strength of our group, proving that not even the most treacherous swamps of the thirty-ninth floor were capable of slowing our march toward the deep secrets that awaited us on the fortieth level and beyond.
