The cave had gradually returned to its previous quiet.
Tessandra eventually released John from her embrace and moved toward a wooden bed positioned against the stone wall. She sat on its edge, crossing one leg over the other as she regarded him with a calm expression. John remained standing nearby, his hands resting at his sides, his attention occasionally drifting toward the cave entrance.
Around them, the others settled into their own arrangements.
Kaelen walked over and sat beside Jess, who shifted slightly to make room for him. Kimotsu leaned against the wall with his arms folded, his eyes half-closed as he recovered from the strain of the previous battles. Denma took a seat opposite them and folded his arms across his chest, appearing deep in thought.
Faith moved over to sit beside him.
Gene, who had apparently decided that the day's events had exhausted every ounce of energy he possessed, found a comfortable spot and promptly fell asleep.
Nobody bothered to wake him.
On the other side of the cave, Britanya sat beside Kaelven. She had recovered enough to sit upright without difficulty, although the occasional glance she cast toward the entrance suggested that she was still processing everything that had happened.
After a few moments of silence, Tessandra raised her head toward John.
"Is it finally going to begin?"
John turned his gaze toward the cave entrance.
Beyond it, the sky stretched over the distant mountain peaks. The wind passed through the surrounding wilderness, carrying the faint vibrations of immense powers gathering beyond the horizon.
"Yes," he answered.
There was no excitement in his voice, nor was there any trace of apprehension. He spoke as though confirming an appointment whose time had already been decided.
Tessandra studied him.
For a while, she remained silent, watching the way his attention rested upon the distant mountains. Then she leaned back slightly, her expression becoming more thoughtful.
"What are you going to do after this war?"
John did not immediately answer.
It was a simple question, yet the answer involved a place that few among those present could even begin to comprehend.
"The Shadow World," he eventually said. "I'll visit it for a while."
Tessandra turned toward him.
John continued, his tone measured. "I don't want its inhabitants becoming too troublesome in the long run. A domain doesn't manage itself, and there are things I need to establish before I leave it unattended again."
He paused briefly. "I suppose I'll be gone for some time."
Tessandra watched him carefully before leaning sideways and resting her head against his shoulder. "Is it something you've always wanted to do?" John looked down at her.
"No. It's something I have to do." His eyes returned to the distant sky. "Let's call it preparation for the future." The words settled between them.
John was not a man who discussed his intentions without reason. Even when he appeared to be speaking casually, his words were chosen with care. Tessandra knew him well enough to recognize when he was giving her an answer and when he was deliberately withholding something. This time, he was doing both. She lifted her head slightly, studying the side of his face.
"You're hiding something."
"Naturally."
She gave him a faint, knowing smile. "You could at least pretend to deny it." "I could. But that would be a waste of both our time."
Tessandra let out a quiet breath that was almost a laugh before settling her head against his shoulder again. John remained silent for a while.
The cave was quiet enough that he could hear Gene's steady breathing from across the room. Outside, the wind brushed against the rocks, and somewhere far beyond the mountains, the forces preparing for the coming battle continued to gather.
Eventually, John spoke again. "I can't speak of it right now." Tessandra's expression grew serious.
"Not even to me?"
"Especially not in a place where others might hear." He lowered his gaze toward her.
"You'll understand soon enough. But if I speak of it before the time is right, a calamity will befall those who cannot bear the truth." For the first time since the conversation began, Tessandra did not immediately respond. She glanced around the cave.
Kaelen was speaking quietly with Jess. Kimotsu remained against the wall, while Denma and Faith sat together in silence. Britanya had turned her attention toward the ground, and Kaelven was staring thoughtfully at the entrance.
None of them appeared to have heard the full conversation. Tessandra sighed.
She had fought alongside John, witnessed his strength, and seen enough of his decisions to understand that he rarely acted without considering the consequences. There were parts of him that even she had yet to discover, and perhaps there always would be.
But she had never needed to know everything before choosing to stand beside him.
"I believe in you," she said quietly. "And I'll be with you regardless of what you choose to do." John looked at her. For a brief moment, the usual coldness in his eyes softened.
Then he smiled. It was a small smile, one that most people would never have noticed beneath his mask. Tessandra noticed it immediately. "Good," he replied. He placed a hand on her head and gently patted her hair once.
Across the cave, Kaelven had been listening to the general direction of their conversation without deliberately trying to intrude. Whatever John was planning after the war, it was clearly something significant. Still, Kaelven knew better than to ask questions that John had already decided not to answer.
There was something more pressing on his mind. He pushed himself away from the wall and stood upright.
"Master." John shifted his gaze toward him. Kaelven hesitated for only a moment before continuing. "Can I witness the final battle?"
The question caught the attention of several people. Kaelen turned his head immediately. A smile slowly appeared on his face. "I was just thinking the same thing."
Kimotsu opened his eyes fully. Denma unfolded his arms, while Faith looked from one to the other. Jess leaned forward, her interest unmistakable.
Even Gene stirred. He opened one eye, looked around with the confusion of someone who had been pulled from a particularly pleasant dream, and then sat up.
"I'm interested."
Kimotsu glanced at him. "You were asleep."
"And now I'm awake."
"That doesn't explain anything."
"It explains that I'm interested."
Kimotsu stared at him for a moment before deciding that the conversation was not worth pursuing. Britanya covered her mouth as a soft chuckle escaped her. Tessandra lifted her head from John's shoulder and looked across the group.
"Look at these kids." She sighed, although there was unmistakable amusement in her voice. "They've barely recovered from the previous battles, and now they want to watch another one." John regarded the group in silence.
At first, he had expected them to remain inside the cave. Their bodies had endured more than enough, and their wills had been tested by opponents whose power surpassed what most people could comprehend.
Yet there was something different about them now.
Kaelen no longer carried himself like someone who merely wanted to survive the next encounter. Kaelven had begun to look beyond his immediate limits. Kimotsu's curiosity had overcome his instinct to remain cautious, while Denma and Jess seemed equally determined to understand what stood at the summit of their world.
Even Gene, despite his questionable timing, had chosen to wake up. John could feel it. Their wills had changed.
Not all at once, and not in the same way. Some had become more resolute, others more curious, and a few had finally begun to understand the distance between their current abilities and the heights they wished to reach.
But change was present in all of them and unlike power, which could be gained or lost, a change in one's understanding could influence every decision that followed. John tilted his head slightly.
"At first, I assumed you'd all be shaken after the battles you endured," he said. "That would have been a reasonable response."
His gaze passed from Kaelen to Kaelven, then to the others.
"But you've also demonstrated something more interesting. You've changed. Your personalities, your convictions, the way you perceive the world..."
He paused. "I can feel your wills." The cave fell silent. John raised one hand.
"So why not?" Before anyone could ask him what he meant, he snapped his fingers. The sound was quiet. The result was instantaneous. The cave disappeared. The wind swept across the mountaintops.
Far above the surrounding landscape, the peaks stood beneath an immense sky, their summits illuminated by the light filtering through the clouds. The terrain below was vast and uneven, filled with valleys, cliffs, and enormous stretches of wilderness.
It was a suitable place for the final confrontation. On the rooftop of a building overlooking the mountains, Lord Zenith stood beside Queen Nullis.
Zenith's attention remained fixed on the distant peaks. His posture was relaxed, but his eyes were sharp. Beside him, Nullis watched the same scene with an expression that revealed little of what she was thinking.
Neither had spoken for several minutes. Then the air beside them shifted. A group of figures appeared on the rooftop.
John stood among them, his arrival so seamless that the wind barely seemed to notice it. Tessandra was beside him, while Britanya, Kaelen, Kaelven, Kimotsu, Denma, Faith, Jess, and Gene appeared in the same instant.
Gene blinked several times. He looked at the rooftop, then at the enormous mountain range stretching before him.
"...That was fast."
"Try not to fall off," Kimotsu replied. Gene glanced at him. "Was that supposed to be reassuring?" "No." Before Gene could respond, Zenith turned around.
His gaze passed over the assembled group, and the tension in his expression eased when he confirmed that everyone was present. A smile appeared on his face. "I'm glad everyone is safe." Kaelen looked at him in surprise. "So you were already here, Lord Zenith?"
Zenith turned his attention back toward the mountains.
"Always has been."
Kaelen walked over beside him.
"...What does that even mean?"
"Exactly what I said."
Nearby, Jess had moved toward the edge of the rooftop. She looked down at the ground several stories below, where two familiar figures stood among the scattered structures.
Jaotsu and Reinhart. Both were watching the mountain peaks, their attention focused on the gathering power in the distance. Then Reinhart seemed to sense that someone was looking at him. He raised his head.
His gaze met Jess's. For a brief moment, neither moved. Then Reinhart smiled. It was a simple gesture, carrying neither challenge nor mockery. He had merely noticed her presence and acknowledged it. Jess stared back at him.
She did not return the smile immediately, but she did not look away either. After a moment, she turned from the edge of the rooftop and walked over to Kaelen, taking her place beside him. Kaelen glanced at her.
"Know him?"
Jess kept her eyes on the mountains. "Something like that." He considered asking another question, but the sudden change in the atmosphere prevented him from doing so. The wind had stopped. Not gradually. It had simply ceased to move.
Across the mountain range, an immense pressure began to gather, spreading through the heavens as though the world itself were holding its breath. The clouds shifted. The peaks trembled.
And somewhere beyond the visible horizon, two opposing presences stood on the verge of colliding. The final battle was about to begin. One side stood ready to impose its will upon the world. The other had no intention of allowing it. On the rooftop, the conversations gradually died away.
Kaelen, Kaelven, Kimotsu, Denma, Faith, Jess, Gene, and Britanya turned their attention toward the mountains. Even Tessandra grew quiet as she watched the distant sky. Zenith's smile faded into a more serious expression. Nullis narrowed her eyes, her All Seeing Null Eyes focused on the battlefield.
John moved forward until he stood beside them. He looked toward the mountain peaks, his hands resting casually at his sides. There was no excitement in his posture. No impatience.
Only the composed attention of a man who had already calculated countless possible outcomes and was waiting to see which one the world would choose. The Shadow Sovereign had returned to his domain. Supreme Light had ascended to Heaven.
And now, upon the world they had left behind, Arata Kurogane and Kitakim were about to settle the matter that had been building toward this moment. John's ocean-blue eyes narrowed slightly. "Witness ," he murmured, "The true power of my creator."
Above the mountains, the first shockwave swept across the sky.
