Chapter 39 - ch38

Chapter: The Beginning of Something Bigger

The next morning, Jay woke up with a smile she couldn't hide.

For the first time in months, her phone wasn't the first thing on her mind.

It was the building.

Her building.

Her dream.

And the fact that Keifer had secretly spent months planning it.

She rushed downstairs and nearly collided with him in the kitchen.

"Whoa!" Keifer laughed, steadying her shoulders. "Good morning to you too."

Jay stared at him.

Keifer immediately became suspicious.

"…Why are you looking at me like that?"

She folded her arms.

"You're annoyingly thoughtful."

He grinned.

"That's the nicest thing you've ever said to me."

"Don't get used to it."

Too late.

He was already smiling like an idiot.

Back at Headquarters

When they arrived, everyone was preparing for the next phase of the internship.

The director walked into the conference room.

"Good news," he announced.

Nobody trusted those words.

Especially Ryan.

"Whenever adults say 'good news,' someone's about to suffer."

The director ignored him.

"The internship teams will compete in a three-week innovation challenge."

The room groaned.

Jay sighed.

Keifer leaned over.

"See? Suffering."

The director continued.

"The winning team will receive direct mentorship from the executive board."

The room immediately became serious.

This was huge.

Even Jay sat up straighter.

Then the director smiled.

"And because we enjoy chaos…"

Everyone became nervous.

"…the teams have been reassigned."

The screen changed.

Names appeared.

Jay searched immediately.

Then froze.

Jay Mariano

Keifer Watson

Alexa Hart

Ryan Carter

Ryan stood up.

"Oh no."

Team Chaos

Five minutes later, they were seated around a table.

Nobody looked happy.

Ryan looked dramatic.

Alexa looked exhausted already.

Jay looked concerned.

Keifer looked entertained.

"This is a terrible idea," Jay said.

"Agreed," Alexa replied.

Ryan pointed at them.

"The fact that you both agreed scares me."

Their challenge?

Create a proposal for a global youth entrepreneurship initiative.

The winning project could actually be implemented.

Suddenly everybody became interested.

Especially Jay.

As the meeting continued, Jay's ideas started flowing rapidly.

She sketched plans.

Created outlines.

Connected concepts.

Within twenty minutes, half the whiteboard was covered.

Everyone stared.

Ryan whispered to Alexa.

"She's scary when she's inspired."

Alexa nodded.

"A little."

Keifer just sat there smiling.

Watching her.

Again.

Jay eventually noticed.

"Why are you staring?"

"Because you're amazing."

The room immediately went silent.

Ryan covered his face.

Alexa looked at the ceiling.

Jay turned bright red.

"KEIFER."

"What?"

"We are in a meeting."

"I know."

"Stop."

"Okay."

He stopped for exactly thirty seconds.

The Challenge Begins

For the next week, the team worked harder than ever.

Late nights.

Research.

Presentations.

Brainstorming sessions.

Arguments.

Lots of arguments.

But something strange happened.

The more they worked together…

The better they became.

Not just Jay and Keifer.

All four of them.

One evening, after everyone else left, Jay remained in the conference room reviewing numbers.

Keifer walked back in carrying coffee.

"You forgot dinner."

She looked up.

"Oh."

"You've been here four hours."

"Oh."

"You really need a better response than 'oh.'"

She laughed.

He placed the coffee beside her.

Then sat down.

For a moment, neither spoke.

The city lights glowed outside the windows.

"You know," Keifer said quietly, "when we were kids, I thought we'd end up running our companies."

Jay smiled.

"And now?"

He looked at her.

"Now I think we might build something better."

Her heart skipped.

For once, she didn't tease him.

Didn't roll her eyes.

Didn't change the subject.

She simply smiled.

And somehow…

That meant more.

Outside the conference room, Ryan happened to walk past.

He looked through the glass.

Saw them smiling at each other.

And immediately texted the group chat:

Emergency.

They're being cute again.

Alexa replied instantly:

We're never surviving this internship.

And honestly?

She was probably right. 😆✨
