Chapter 96 - Chapter 95, Quiet Schemes, Loud Thoughts

Quiet Schemes, Loud Thoughts

The mansion was quiet. Too quiet. Not the usual kind where Aqua would be yelling about money or Kazuma Satou complaining about his life. This silence felt… empty. Because someone was missing. Ruko sat alone in the living room, leaning back in a chair, one leg over the armrest, staring at the ceiling. "…So this is what happens." No one answered. Because no one was there. Kazuma, Aqua, and Megumin had already left earlier—dressed in disguises, talking about something half-serious, half-stupid. Something about "just talking" to Darkness. Ruko knew better. "…They somehow went to her house... even without me." He said it like a fact. Because it was obvious. He closed his eyes slowly. "…Trying to reason with her…" A pause. "…Sigh... Pointless." He tilted his head slightly, eyes opening again. "…She already made her choice." Silence filled the room again. Then— "Or did she?" His eyes sharpened slightly. That small feeling again. That strange instinct. Like something underneath everything. "…This situation…" He sat up slowly. "…Doesn't feel natural." A faint blue panel flickered in front of him. [Main Skill Activated: Insight] His gaze steadied. "…Been a while since I used this." He leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

"…Let's see…"

His thoughts began to line up—slowly, carefully. Not rushing. Like a detective. "Darkness leaves suddenly…" "Acts unnatural…" "Doesn't ask for help…" "…And ties it to debt." He tapped his finger lightly against his knee. "…Debt big enough to force a noble like her to submit…" A small pause. "…How much?" His eyes narrowed slightly. "…Not small." He leaned back again. "…But not as big as it sounds either." He exhaled slowly. "…Someone's inflating it." The thought sat there. Heavy. Then—Footsteps. Ruko didn't move.Didn't even look. Because he already knew. "Still thinking, I see." The calm, mocking voice echoed. Vanir stepped into the room like he owned it. Ruko didn't react. "…You seem to be like you sleep in the corridor?" Vanir chuckled. "I have many rooms." Ruko glanced sideways. "…Yeah. Invisible ones." Vanir placed himself on the small couch anyway. The one that clearly proved he had no room or lived in the mansion. Silence. Then— "You're been using mind very clearly. What schems are you picking up?" Vanir said casually. Ruko didn't deny it. "…Trying to piece things together." Vanir leaned back. "…And what have you concluded?" Ruko stared forward. "…Political corruption."

Vanir's mask tilted slightly. "…Go on." "Debt pressure." "Unnatural behavior." "…Forced decisions." Ruko's eyes sharpened faintly. "…And someone benefiting from it." A pause. "…Well I already know's Lord Alderp." Vanir chuckled softly. "Correct. Anything to add." Ruko clicked his tongue. "…Tch." He leaned back again. "…Meh, Doesn't matter." Vanir raised an eyebrow behind the mask. "…Doesn't matter?" Ruko closed his eyes. "…Not my problem." Silence. Then—Vanir spoke again. "…You could stop it. Ever since we have that conversation outside." Ruko didn't respond. "…You could interfere." Still nothing. "…You could kill him. That you said before." That made Ruko open one eye. "…And ruin everything?" Vanir chuckled. "…Ah. So you still understand." Ruko sat up slightly. "…As I said before... If I move now…" A small pause. "…I'll break the flow and chance some influence in time." His gaze lowered. "…And I don't even know the full picture yet." Vanir nodded slightly. "…So you will wait." "…Yeah." Ruko leaned back again. "…I'll wait." Silence filled the room again.

Then—Vanir stood up. "Well then… I shall leave you to your thoughts." Ruko didn't respond. Vanir walked out of the mansion. Ruko stand up and look toward the corridor—The small one. With the tiny couch. "…Ugh! My room." Ruko muttered. Vanir ignored him and disappeared. The mansion returned to silence. Ruko sat there alone again. "…Insight…" The panel flickered faintly. "…Not enough." He exhaled slowly. "…Need more information." But he didn't move. Didn't rush. Didn't chase.Just sat there. Thinking. Waiting. "…Whatever they're doing…" He glanced toward the door. "…It won't be enough." A small pause. Then a faint smirk. "…But it'll push things forward... for now at least." He leaned back fully this time. Closing his eyes. "…And when it does…" Silence. "…I'll move. When the time is ripe." "...Wait why I'm I saying ripe?... Kinda weird of me to say." The wind outside brushed against the windows. Soft. Calm. Like nothing was wrong.

But Ruko knew. Something big was coming. And for now—He stayed exactly where he was. Watching. And thinking.
