Whis observed for a moment before speaking:
"His control over power is extremely crude. At a glance, it's obvious he has never received proper martial arts training. If we measure it in terms of battle power, it's roughly 3 million."
The moment those words were spoken, Gran froze.
Back then, Vegeta had been revived four times using fragments of Senzu Beans by Raditz and Nappa.
His battle power had risen from 6,000 to 300,000.
Yet now, nineteen years had passed, and his strength had only increased tenfold.
At this moment, not only was Gran puzzled—even Whis found it unbelievable.
The potential of the Saiyan race was something Whis had already witnessed through Gran, Son Goku, Broly, and Roz from Universe 6.
Wasn't Vegeta the Prince of the Saiyans?
How could his growth be so insignificant?
"Let me see exactly how he trained during these nineteen years."
Whis waved his staff again, and another projection appeared beside the first.
This image showed Vegeta's experiences over the past nineteen years.
It turned out that after Vegeta had been severely injured by Gran back then, he had experienced four more near-death situations.
Eventually, he discovered that Saiyans gain tremendous power after recovering from near death.
So he began exploiting the mechanic.
Over the next nineteen years, he constantly searched for more advanced medical equipment. Then he repeatedly had Raditz and the others beat him to the brink of death.
It had to be said—Vegeta's willpower was terrifying.
Even after experiencing so many near-death states, he showed not the slightest fear.
Each time advanced medical equipment healed him, he would immediately prepare for the next round of self-inflicted injury.
Over the years, he had undergone ten near-death recoveries and fifteen severe injuries.
Seeing this—
Gran's eyes widened.
He had never imagined Vegeta would attempt to increase his strength in such a way.
But after thinking carefully, it actually matched what happened in the Namek Saga of the anime. Once Vegeta learned about the Saiyans' near-death power boost, he also tried to exploit Dende's healing ability to repeatedly gain power.
It wasn't until the end of the Namek Saga, when he later learned that Son Goku trained using gravity, that Vegeta finally changed his training method.
Thinking about it this way—
it wasn't strange that Vegeta kept trying to abuse the loophole.
"Gran, when I saved you back then, your power also surged once."
"That's because Saiyans naturally have a portion of latent power hidden within their bodies. Recovering from near death allows them to unlock that power."
"But that hidden power is limited. Just like Vegeta—at the beginning he could indeed multiply his strength several times. However, as the number of self-inflicted injuries increases, the growth becomes slower and slower."
"Eventually, it produces no effect at all."
Whis shook his head repeatedly.
(PS: This follows the setting from the anime. After the Namek Saga, Toriyama essentially stopped using this mechanic.)
"That guy is truly foolish. Does he really not understand that nothing in this world comes without effort?"
Gran also shook his head.
He had thought Vegeta's fate had changed—that he would become different.
But in the end, a lump of mud cannot be plastered onto a wall.
Vegeta would always look for shortcuts, and it was no wonder he would forever remain one step behind Son Goku.
"Lord Gran, if Vegeta only has 3 million battle power, isn't he basically going there to die?" Bulma exclaimed, stunned.
"If that's all he has, then yes—he's going to die."
Gran looked at Vegeta sitting inside the spaceship.
With a base power of 3 million, Vegeta technically met the first condition required to transform into a Super Saiyan.
But there were two other conditions.
One required extreme rage.
The other required a sufficient amount of S-cells.
The rage condition probably wouldn't be a problem for Vegeta.
But the S-cell requirement?
At this point in time, Vegeta most likely couldn't meet it.
Which meant—
Even if he went to seek revenge against Frieza, he still wouldn't be able to transform into a Super Saiyan.
He would be challenging Frieza, whose battle power was 120 million, with only 3 million.
"Heh… I'd like to see how he dies."
A mocking smile appeared on Gran's face.
And so, over the next three days, Gran kept watching Vegeta.
However—
Seven days passed, and Vegeta and the others were still on their spaceship.
Only after Whis revealed Vegeta's current location did Gran realize how far away he still was from Frieza's headquarters.
Based on the speed of Vegeta's spaceship, it would take another half year to reach Frieza's base.
"Forget it. This is boring."
It was now Gran's seventh day on Earth.
He asked Whis to dismiss the projection.
"Very well."
Whis nodded and quickly dispersed the image floating in midair.
"So what should we do next? Go find something delicious to eat?"
Whis licked his lips.
"Food, huh?"
Gran looked up at the sky.
The sun had already tilted westward—it was about dinnertime.
"I just thought of a place. There should be some rather unique cuisine there."
Gran grinned.
"Whis, want to try it?"
Whis's eyes instantly lit up.
Food recommended by Gran was usually very good.
"Yes, yes, yes! Let's go try that unique food you mentioned!"
"Lord Gran, where are you going to find good food? I want to go too!"
Bulma hurriedly trotted to Gran's side.
"You?"
Gran looked at Bulma.
She was making silly faces at him, sticking out her tongue mischievously.
"Keep that up and I might punch you."
Gran raised his fist, but then suddenly thought of something and shook his head helplessly.
"Fine, you can come—but you have to help me make something first."
"What is it?"
Bulma asked curiously.
Gran glanced at Broly beside him and then smiled.
"Help me make a Dragon Ball Radar."
"A Dragon Ball Radar?"
Bulma blinked in confusion.
She opened a box containing Capsules, selected one, pressed it, and tossed it into the air.
A Dragon Ball Radar popped out and landed in her hand.
She handed it to Gran.
"Here you go."
"..."
Gran's face darkened.
He tossed the radar back into Bulma's arms and said flatly:
"Not that kind of Dragon Ball Radar."
"I need you to make a Super Dragon Ball Radar."
Bulma's mouth fell wide open.
A Dragon Ball Radar searches for Dragon Balls.
But the Super Dragon Ball Radar Gran mentioned—
would obviously search for Super Dragon Balls.
Could it be…
that another type of Dragon Ball existed in this universe?
"Lord Gran… what exactly are these Super Dragon Balls you're talking about?"
Bulma's eyes sparkled.
Her breathing became slightly quick—clearly, she was extremely curious about these mysterious Super Dragon Balls.
