The thought alone made her tremble. 'It couldn't really be ghosts, but then what was happening to me?'
She barely had enough time to process what was happening before her bedroom door suddenly swung open and her mother rushed inside.
Linda immediately turned toward her. "Mom, something is wrong with me," she complained, her voice trembling with fear and frustration. "I feel like my entire body is burning."
Her mother did not look surprised.
Instead, Miriam stared at her with an expression that seemed to hold both helplessness and determination.
It was as though she had been expecting this moment for years and yet had spent all those years wishing she could spare Linda from experiencing it.
Without saying anything, she crossed the room and pulled Linda into her arms.
Her palms felt surprisingly cool against Linda's overheated skin as she gently placed them against her forehead.
