The first thing Ryan noticed was the silence.
Not the normal silence of a quiet morning.
This one felt… alive.
The air pressed lightly against his skin.
Subtle—
But impossible to ignore.
Ryan slowly opened his eyes.
Faint gray light seeped through the dusty diner windows, illuminating rows of empty booths and overturned chairs. Outside, the world was just beginning to wake under a pale dawn sky.
But Ryan had already been awake for several minutes.
Lying on the diner floor, he watched the ceiling while something unusual stirred at the edge of his awareness.
It was subtle.
Like a faint pressure in the air.
Or the feeling of standing near a river you couldn't see.
Mana.
The air was thick with it now.
Ryan slowly sat up.
His body felt different than it had yesterday. The circulation technique had left his muscles loose and energized at the same time.
He flexed his fingers slightly.
Mana flowed faintly beneath his skin.
Not visibly—but he could feel it.
Like a quiet current moving through his veins.
The circulation worked.
[I told you it would.]
Iris' voice appeared gently in his mind.
Ryan leaned back against the wall.
I know.
He closed his eyes briefly.
The strange sensation was still there.
Actually… it was stronger now.
Ryan frowned slightly.
Something feels different.
Iris sounded curious.
[Different how?]
Ryan focused.
He could feel the others inside the diner.
Marcus snoring loudly near one of the booths.
Alice sleeping quietly beside Elena.
Even Sarah moving gently as she checked the bandage on Daniel's arm.
Ryan slowly opened his eyes again.
I can feel them.
Not clearly—
But undeniably there.
There was a brief pause.
Then Iris giggled softly.
[Of course you can.]
Ryan frowned.
Don't tell me that's normal.
[It is.]
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
It wasn't like this before.
[That's because your mana capacity and control have improved.]
Ryan looked toward the diner window.
The forest outside stood dark and quiet.
But even there—
He could feel something.
Small flickers of life moving between the trees.
Birds.
Rodents.
Insects.
All faintly brushing against his awareness.
Ryan exhaled slowly.
So that's what this is.
[Your affinity with mana is increasing.]
Ryan glanced toward the system interface floating faintly in his vision.
His Intelligence stat hadn't changed.
Which brought another question to mind.
Iris.
[Yes?]
If my senses are improving…
Ryan tapped the interface.
Why hasn't my Intelligence stat increased?
There was a short pause.
Then Iris answered.
[Because they aren't connected.]
Ryan raised an eyebrow.
They're not?
[No.]
Her voice became slightly more instructional.
[Intelligence represents the strength of your soul.]
Ryan blinked.
My soul?
The word felt heavier than it should have.
[Yes.]
Ryan leaned his head back against the wall again.
That wasn't the answer he expected.
Then why is it a stat?
[Because soul strength determines how well you can perceive and control higher forms of energy.]
Ryan considered that.
So the stronger my soul… the better I can understand cultivation?
[Exactly.]
Ryan tapped the screen again.
Then why can't I train it?
This time Iris didn't answer immediately.
When she finally spoke, her tone was more serious.
[Because soul cultivation is not allowed in the Mortal Realm.]
Ryan frowned.
Not allowed?
[The heavens restrict it.]
Ryan stared at the ceiling again.
Why?
[Because a weak body and unstable mana channels cannot support a powerful soul.]
Ryan understood immediately.
If someone tried to strengthen their soul too quickly…
Their body would collapse.
Their mind could shatter.
So the Intelligence stat only increases when I level up.
[Correct.]
[Each level naturally strengthens your soul foundation.]
Ryan nodded slowly.
That made sense.
Cultivation wasn't just about gathering power.
It was about building a stable structure.
Body.
Mana.
Soul.
Each piece had to grow together.
And the circulation technique strengthens the first two.
[Yes.]
Ryan smiled faintly.
You really gave me something ridiculous.
Iris giggled again.
[You designed it.]
Ryan paused.
What?
For a brief moment—
Iris didn't respond.
Then Iris quickly corrected herself.
[I mean… it suits you.]
Ryan narrowed his eyes slightly.
But he didn't push the question.
Instead, he slowly stood up.
The diner floor creaked softly beneath his feet.
Outside, the sky had begun to brighten.
Morning had arrived.
Behind him, someone stirred.
Ryan turned just in time to see Alice sit up.
Her hair was messy and her eyes half-open.
She blinked at him sleepily.
"Ryan?"
He smiled faintly.
"Morning."
Alice rubbed her eyes.
"You didn't sleep."
Ryan shrugged.
"A little."
She studied him for a moment.
Then tilted her head slightly.
"You feel different."
Ryan chuckled.
"That's a strange thing to say first thing in the morning."
Alice shook her head.
"No, I mean it."
She closed her eyes briefly.
Green mana flickered faintly around her fingers.
"I can feel the plants outside."
Ryan nodded.
"Your ability is getting stronger."
Alice looked back at him.
"Not just that."
Her brow furrowed slightly.
"I can feel you too."
Ryan raised an eyebrow.
"Oh?"
She hesitated.
"It's like…"
Alice searched for the right words.
"Standing near a river."
Ryan laughed quietly.
"That's actually a pretty good description."
Alice blinked.
"So it's real?"
"Very."
Alice stretched slightly before standing up.
"So what did you do last night?"
Ryan picked up the spear resting beside the wall.
"Training."
Alice stared at him.
"You trained while we slept."
Ryan shrugged.
"I had time."
Alice crossed her arms.
"You are a very strange person."
Ryan smirked slightly.
"I've been told that before."
Behind them, Marcus suddenly groaned loudly.
"Ugh…"
He rolled over on the diner floor and squinted at the light coming through the windows.
"Is it morning already?"
Elena opened one eye.
"Yes."
Marcus sighed dramatically.
"I hate mornings."
Ryan glanced toward the door.
"Then you should wake up."
Marcus groaned again.
"Why?"
Ryan rested the spear against his shoulder.
"Because we're leaving soon."
Marcus sat up.
"Already?"
Ryan nodded toward the forest outside.
"Blackwood is still watching."
Marcus scratched the back of his head.
"…That forest creeps me out."
Ryan looked through the diner windows again.
The trees stood still.
Quiet.
But the mana in the air still felt heavy.
And somewhere beyond those trees—
Something else was moving.
Ryan smiled faintly.
The new world was waking up.
And they still had a long road ahead.
Outside—
The forest remained silent.
Watching.

Soul, mana, body… everything is connected.
But not everything is allowed.
