Chapter 41 - Chapter 40 - Eyes in the Dark

Ryan waited.

He didn't move until the last voice faded.

Until the final restless shift of bodies settled into stillness.

Only then did he open his eyes fully.

The gym had gone quiet.

Not peaceful.

Never peaceful.

Just… quiet.

He shifted slightly away from the group and lowered himself into a cross-legged position.

Every few seconds—

There it was again.

A faint brush against his senses.

Corrupted mana.

Not strong.

Not aggressive.

Just—

There.

Like something skimming across the surface of the room.

Passing over people.

Lingering.

Moving on.

Ryan's gaze drifted across the sleeping figures.

No movement.

No sound.

Nothing out of place.

The third time it happened, he exhaled slowly.

Watching… but not acting.

Testing?

His eyes narrowed slightly.

Or waiting for something.

The presence brushed past him again.

Closer this time.

Ryan's breath paused for half a second.

Not fear—

Instinct.

Like something had just passed within arm's reach.

Then—

Gone.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

…It knows I can feel it.

A beat.

Then he closed his eyes anyway.

There was something else he needed to do.

He focused inward.

Status

Ryan blinked.

A flicker of surprise passed through him.

That much… already?

[Five percent might not sound like much.]

[But when it stacks…]

[It becomes something else entirely.]

Ryan huffed softly.

"Something else" is one way to put it.

A bit ridiculous is another.

A soft laugh echoed in his mind.

[Of course it is.]

[And you haven't even begun to push it yet.]

Ryan tilted his head slightly.

You said skills grow through understanding and use.

But this one… it just works.

[Passive doesn't mean inactive.]

Ryan raised a brow.

[You're using it every second.]

[You just don't control it.]

[So it grows the same way—just without effort.]

[No technique to refine.]

[No control to master.]

[Just accumulation.]

Ryan exhaled slowly.

Convenient.

[Dangerous.]

A pause.

[Now stop thinking and cultivate.]

A faint smile tugged at his lips.

Bossy.

[Hmph.]

Ryan closed his eyes.

Breath in.

Hold.

Release.

Again.

And again.

The world faded.

Sound dulled.

The cold gym floor beneath him disappeared.

Until—

There was only mana.

Faint blue currents, drifting through the air like slow-moving tides.

Ryan reached for them.

Drew them in.

And began.

***

Far away—

Inside the quiet expanse of his pocket dimension—

Iris sat cross-legged on her bed.

A soft blue screen hovered in front of her.

Ryan.

She watched him in silence.

His breathing.

His rhythm.

The smooth, uninterrupted flow of mana through his body.

A small smile curved her lips.

"Even now…"

Her voice was soft.

"…you make it look easy."

***

Time blurred.

One circulation became ten.

Ten became—

More.

Ryan lost count.

Each cycle strengthened something.

Subtle.

Incremental.

But undeniable.

His body adapted.

His mana deepened.

His control refined itself without thought.

When his eyes finally opened—

The world snapped back into place.

Sharper.

Clearer.

The darkness no longer hid anything.

He could see across the entire gym.

Every outline.

Every shape.

He could hear—

The quiet shift of someone turning in their sleep.

A faint breath.

The smallest movement of fabric.

Ryan looked down at his hands.

Slowly clenched his fists.

Power responded instantly.

Not overwhelming.

Not yet.

But present.

Different.

More balanced.

[That's the technique.]

Ryan's gaze steadied.

[Your body and mana grow together.]

[No imbalance.]

[No wasted growth.]

[Even at a lower level…]

[Your strength can't be compared of the past you at the same level.]

Ryan exhaled softly.

That explains it.

[I think you'll appreciate your status more.]

Ryan didn't need to be told twice.

"Status."

Ryan's eyes narrowed slightly.

That's… a big jump.

Before he could think further—

A sound.

Soft.

Barely there.

Ryan's head lifted.

His gaze snapped toward the gym entrance.

A shadow shifted.

Then—

A figure slipped inside.

Slow.

Careful.

Trying not to be seen.

Ryan didn't move.

Didn't react.

He simply watched.

Simon.

The man paused just inside the doorway.

Breathing slightly heavier than he should have been.

His eyes flicked across the gym.

Quick.

Nervous.

Checking.

Then—

He moved.

Not toward his group.

Not toward Ward.

Toward the far side of the gym.

Where fewer people slept.

Ryan's eyes narrowed.

Where were you?

There was no fear in his movements.

Just caution.

Like he knew exactly what he was avoiding.

Simon crouched briefly beside one of his men.

Whispered something.

Too quiet to hear.

Then settled down as if he had been there the whole time.

Ryan didn't look away for several seconds.

Out at night.

Alone.

While people are disappearing.

His fingers tapped lightly against his knee.

Interesting.

Eventually—

Ryan lay back down.

He didn't close his eyes immediately.

Instead, he stared up at the dark ceiling.

Listened.

Felt.

Waited.

The presence came again.

Faint.

Passing.

Watching.

Still not acting.

Ryan's eyes slowly shut.

***

Morning came too quickly.

Light filtered weakly through the windows.

The gym stirred.

People woke in clusters.

Voices low.

Movements cautious.

Ryan was already on his feet.

Marcus stretched, groaning.

"I hate sleeping on floors."

"You complain about everything," Elena muttered.

"That's because everything deserves it."

Alice smiled faintly, but her attention shifted to Ryan.

"You're serious about this?"

Ryan nodded.

"We don't have time to wait."

Marcus rolled his shoulders.

"So we're going out."

Ryan looked at him.

"Yes."

Then to Elena.

"You're with him."

Elena didn't argue this time.

Her expression had settled into something sharper.

Focused.

"And you?" she asked.

Ryan glanced toward the hallway.

"Alice and I will search the school."

Alice's fingers tightened slightly.

Just for a moment.

Then she nodded.

"Alright."

Marcus grinned.

"Try not to have too much fun without us."

Elena shot him a look.

"Focus."

Ryan stepped forward.

His tone dropped slightly.

"Be careful."

Marcus waved him off.

"Relax. We'll be fine."

Ryan held his gaze for a second longer than necessary.

Then nodded.

"Good."

They stood at the edge of the gym.

Two paths.

Two directions.

Marcus cracked his neck.

"Alright. Let's go make ourselves useful."

Elena adjusted her grip on her weapon.

Without another word—

They turned.

And walked out.

Ryan watched them go.

Just for a moment.

Then—

He turned the opposite way.

"Alice."

She stepped beside him.

"Let's find it."

Before it finds someone else.

Author's Note:

Two paths.

Outside… or inside.

Which one would you choose?
