Chapter 383: Arbok Awakens
Team Rocket had been able to grow into such a massive, globe-spanning syndicate largely because many regional alliances within the World League had secret, profitable ties with them. Even among the "Big Five"—the five strongest national alliances that governed the World League—certain factions maintained an ambiguous, "don't ask, don't tell" relationship with the organization.
It was this ability to weave through the gray areas of international politics that allowed Team Rocket to expand their reach, one black-market deal at a time. This was also why the Huaxia League, despite its hardline stance, had previously only been able to keep its own borders clean rather than fully uprooting the cancer. The syndicate was always protected by some "righteous" local alliance in another corner of the world.
But this time, everything had changed.
Team Rocket had revealed a weapon—Mewtwo—that threatened the hegemony of all five major powers. A threat of that magnitude was no longer a business partner; it was a ticking time bomb.
The consensus among the Big Five was now absolute: Team Rocket had to be erased.
Under the combined pressure of the world's superpowers, every local alliance on the planet was now trembling. No one dared to even whisper to an R-Organization contact. The Huaxia League took the lead, reaching into neighboring territories to conduct "stabilization operations."
Compared to the internal discipline of Huaxia, the illegal activities in surrounding regions were rampant. Every shovel-turn revealed another secret base or black-market ring. It was a massive, daunting project, but the momentum was unstoppable.
On Dragon Island, Kenji was enjoying a rare moment of peace. He was sprawled lazily across a thick tree branch, staring up at the clear sky. Every now and then, a Dragonite would soar overhead, its silhouette a familiar sight in this prehistoric paradise.
While the island lacked the high-tech bustle of the mainland, its rugged, natural beauty remained untouched by the modern world. It had a charm all its own.
Two weeks passed in a blink.
And on this day, Arbok, who had been in a heavy coma for half a month, finally opened its eyes.
During its long slumber, the snake's body had undergone a profound transformation. Its physical form had moved even further away from a standard Arbok and toward the "Eastern Dragon" of ancient myth.
The only "flaw" in its majestic appearance was that Arbok still hadn't grown limbs. But in every other regard—the density of its obsidian scales, the sharpness of its horns, and its lethal presence—it was a dragon in all but name.
More importantly, after fifteen days of quiet absorption, the sudden surge in Arbok's power had finally stabilized.
The jump from Level 80 to Level 90—powered entirely by an external divine source—had initially left its foundation "shaky." In the world of high-tier training, growing too fast without proper integration could lead to a ceiling on future growth or a failure to exert 100% of one's power in battle.
Even with Kenji's Star-Up System, he always scheduled periods of "consolidation training" after a power jump. The two-week coma had acted as a natural consolidation phase. Arbok's Level 90 status was now solid iron.
With Arbok awake, Kenji began to consider returning to the mainland.
Dragon Island was beautiful, but it lacked the specialized high-intensity training facilities of Metropolis Academy. Moreover, having Namgung Xi constantly dragging him along on "sightseeing tours" made it hard for Kenji to focus his team's training.
He had less than a year to conquer the Road to the Championship. He needed to get serious.
But as Kenji was making his plans, Namgung Zhang, the Patriarch, sought him out first.
"Kenji, boy, are you planning to leave us so soon?" the old man asked as he entered the guest suite.
Kenji nodded, looking a bit apologetic. "Yes, Patriarch. I need to head back to the mainland for special training. The Elite Four won't wait for me forever."
Namgung Zhang nodded, making idle small talk for a few minutes before finally dropping the real question. "And... what about Arbok? Kenji, have you considered leaving it here on the island for a while?"
Kenji blinked, surprised. "Leave him here?"
Before Kenji could ask why, the Patriarch leaned in. "Do you know why the Guardian Deity has watched over this island for thousands of years without fail?"
Kenji's eyes lit up. He shook his head. "Does it have to do with some ancient secret?"
Kenji expected a tale of mystical artifacts or divine pacts. Instead, Namgung Zhang let out a mischievous chuckle. "I have no idea."
"..." Kenji stared at him flatly.
"But," the Patriarch quickly added, turning serious, "what I do know is that this island is special. It's not just a rock in the ocean. It is a genuine 'Leyline'—a sanctuary specifically tuned to Dragon-types."
"Long ago, our ancestors noticed that Dragon-type Pokémon living on this island grew significantly faster and stronger than their peers on the mainland. We believe it has something to do with the environment the Dragonite line has cultivated here over countless generations."
