In the Forest of Death, Itsuki, Karin, and Yakumo were moving slowly across the ground.
"Many people have already started making moves. Is it okay for us to just wander around like this?" Karin asked.
She had already learned the basics of Kagura's Mind Eye.
Though not yet very skilled, she could still sense chakra roughly within a certain range.
"Don't worry," Itsuki said calmly. "There are thirty-four teams in the Forest of Death and only seventeen pairs of Heaven and Earth scrolls. Within one day, no more than five teams will gather both scrolls and reach the Central Tower.
"Also, there will definitely be teams who hoard scrolls and delay entering the tower, hoping to reduce competition first. So even if we stroll around here for five days, we'll still have enough time to collect what we need and reach the tower."
What Itsuki said was logical, but without a scroll in hand, most would feel insecure.
Still, since he spoke with confidence, neither girl argued further.
Itsuki smiled and added, "We came straight here after the first exam. It's already past three in the afternoon. Come to think of it… we haven't eaten lunch yet."
"I brought ration pills!" Karin quickly pulled out a small bottle from her ninja pouch. "Tsunade-sensei gave me these before we left. Enough to keep our team going for ten days."
"No, no, no!" Itsuki waved his hand. "Ration pills are only for emergencies. Don't forget—this is a primeval forest. There's plenty of food here."
Karin blinked. "Wait, you mean we're going to—"
"Of course! How can you not have a picnic when you're out in the wild?" Itsuki grinned.
They were nearing a river when he declared, "Alright, here's the plan! Karin, gather firewood. Yakumo, set up a fire. I'll get the ingredients. Deal?"
Before either of them could respond, he vanished into the forest.
"Oh, come on!" Karin stomped her foot. She had wanted to go with him.
It would have been better to leave the fire-making to Yakumo alone.
Yakumo, quiet as always, pursed her lips and silently began setting up a fire pit.
With no choice, Karin wandered off to collect wood.
But in truth, once he was out of sight, Itsuki burst forward with chakra-enhanced speed, disappearing into the dense trees.
[Ino Yamanaka: Oh no, we ran into that gourd freak. I tried to lead Shikamaru and Choji around, but we ran into him again!]
[Hinata Hyuga: Um… he's also behind you. Hiding in the bushes.]
[Tenten: That guy is dangerous. Be careful. @Uzumaki Karin, where are you? In the future vision, it was Itsuki who stopped Gaara.]
[Uzumaki Karin: Huh? I'm in the woods gathering firewood. Itsuki-kun said we were having a picnic, so he went for ingredients. But… wait. I can't sense your chakra anywhere nearby.]
[Haruno Sakura: So Itsuki ditched you on purpose? He probably thinks you're holding him back.]
[Uzumaki Karin: No way! He must've just gone further to hunt for food and then happened to save Ino and Hinata. That's all!]
[Ino Yamanaka: @Haruno Sakura don't start! Orochimaru's lurking—he's watching you!]
[Haruno Sakura: I'm not afraid. If he dares to come at me, I'll… @Tsunade-sensei, back me up!]
Itsuki darted through the forest, holding two fat rabbits in his hands.
After a few flickers, he was already standing in front of Gaara's team.
"Hey, we meet again," Itsuki said casually, raising a hand in greeting.
His eyes shifted to the blonde girl. "You're Temari, right?"
Gaara's expression hardened. He had just slaughtered three Kusagakure shinobi here, then crushed three more from Amegakure with his sand.
The sight of blood had stirred his unstable emotions, making his urge to kill stronger.
He'd noticed some shinobi hiding nearby, and now suddenly, Itsuki appeared in front of him.
His instincts screamed—Itsuki was stronger than he looked.
"Why are you here?" Temari asked nervously, wary of Itsuki's strength but even more worried about Gaara losing control.
"Me? I'm here for this." Itsuki held up the rabbits. "Looking for ingredients. Planning a picnic. Want to join? You bring meat, you eat."
"Picnic…?" Temari's lips twitched. "You're unbelievable."
"I think he's just mocking us!" Kankuro snapped. He already disliked Itsuki.
"Kankuro!" Temari hissed sharply, glancing at Gaara in panic. The last thing they needed was to fuel his rage.
Kankuro quickly backpedaled. "Gaara, I didn't mean—"
"Shut up," Gaara growled.
He glared at Itsuki with bloodthirsty eyes. "Senju Itsuki, that's your name, right? I'm curious. Can you use Wood Release like the First Hokage?"
Wood Release?
Temari and Kankuro froze. So that was his secret ability?
Itsuki smiled lightly. "Do you want to fight me here?"
Gaara's hands trembled slightly. He wanted to fight, desperately—but his instincts warned him.
"Gaara, don't!" Temari quickly cut in. "Whether he can really use Wood Release or not, he's not like the others you killed earlier. This isn't worth it."
"Right… right. Gaara," Kankuro added nervously. "This is just the second exam. There will be plenty of chances later. Fighting him now will only benefit other teams."
Itsuki stood there with a calm smile, his expression clearly saying: If you attack, I'll fight back. If not, we walk away like nothing happened.
Gaara's body shook, but after a long moment, he forced himself calm. "The main course… should be saved for last."
He turned away, then paused and spoke without looking back. "When we fight, I'll kill you. Your blood will be very delicious. Killing you will prove my existence again."
With that, he walked off, leaving Temari and Kankuro scrambling to follow.
"Wait for me, Gaara!" Kankuro called, chasing after him.
Temari lingered for a moment, looking at Itsuki with a complicated expression. "Once Gaara sets his eyes on you… you can't escape. Be careful."
Then she hurried after her brothers.
"Ha. Interesting." Itsuki chuckled to himself.
That Temari… she looked at him differently just now.
But really, what had he done to her? Nothing much—except maybe pulling her hair once.
