When the news came that their retreat had been cut off, the Military Commander's expression hardened. She looked over the weary defenders on the city wall, a wave of powerlessness rising in her chest.
But she quickly forced her emotions aside — they hadn't lost yet!
"Notify everyone! In three minutes, I'll reopen the city defense barrier. When it activates, we'll fight our way back!" she ordered sharply.
There was no hope holding the front line anymore, but perhaps a sliver of life still remained in the rear!
Then, she turned to Song Jie. "You've done enough. Take that girl and leave. The future of our country will need people like you two."
Song Jie's gaze was calm and resolute. "I'll go with you. If it really comes to that point, I'll make my choice."
The Military Commander nodded slightly.
At that moment, Mu Tingying quietly came to Song Jie's side.
Though she had changed into a new set of clothes, the fierce battle on the wall had left her filthy once again. Her hair was messy, her face streaked with soot.
She had seen Song Jie and the Military Commander go out earlier to hunt down the Bloodthirsty Ants. If it were her, she never would have dared.
That kind of mission was pure suicide — one mistake, and they'd both have died there.
Her own resistance on the wall had only been for self-preservation.
She wanted to live.
Yet, she couldn't help but admire Song Jie. Among her peers, none had his courage.
She used to hate him — but now, her feelings were beginning to change.
Song Jie noticed her approach and said bluntly, "Stay close to me later. I don't want my two Star River Veins disappearing."
Mu Tingying nodded seriously. In this situation, she knew what truly mattered.
Song Jie stood up and waited. When the city defense barrier opened, they would retreat toward the rear.
Three minutes passed quickly.
A faint violet light curtain shimmered, enveloping the entire city wall.
"Everyone, evacuate the wall immediately!" the Military Commander shouted.
The barrier would hold off the Bloodthirsty Ants for a short time — enough for them to pull back.
"Follow me!" Song Jie commanded.
He led the group down from the tower.
But outside the barrier, the outer districts were already crawling with Bloodthirsty Ants, their bodies glistening with scarlet fluids as they wandered the streets, waiting for reinforcements.
Several areas had already fallen completely under the swarm's control — and yet, those were the only paths left for Song Jie and the others to escape.
"Fight your way out!"
The Military Commander led the charge, and when the Bloodthirsty Ants spotted them, they surged forward like a living tide.
She raised her hand, and her Intermediate-Level Sound Element spell erupted in a deafening wave. Though not as destructive as her Advanced-Level magic, it was still terrifyingly strong.
Song Jie didn't attack yet. His energy was nearly depleted — he was saving what remained for the critical moment.
Still, he couldn't help feeling a rush of satisfaction. Every Bloodthirsty Ant killed was counted toward his own kills.
He could see remnant souls and glowing essence orbs constantly being absorbed into his bracelet. It was a harvest beyond imagination.
Yet deep down, he sighed. If possible, he would rather not gain any of this — not at the cost of You City's devastation.
But fate rarely allowed choices.
Due to the intensity of the battle, the Bloodthirsty Ants from other areas were soon drawn toward the commotion.
The escape route they'd opened was quickly sealed off again.
The Military Commander's fists clenched tight. They were so close to breaking through!
"Fight your way out!" she roared again, leading another charge.
"Fire Burst!"
"Earth Wave!"
"Ice Spread!"
Spells of every element exploded in a storm of power, lighting up the streets.
But no matter how many they killed, more Ants came crawling over the corpses of their kin.
They were endless.
A grim realization settled over everyone — it seemed they might have to die here.
"Soul-Snatching Melody!"
"Severing Burial!"
The Military Commander's chant echoed like a divine requiem. Waves of Bloodthirsty Ants froze mid-charge and collapsed lifelessly.
"Those without magic energy, stay in the middle! Those who still have mana, hold the line!" she commanded.
But the ones who had exhausted their mana didn't hide.
Instead, they picked up whatever they could — broken blades, bricks, even stones — and continued fighting.
The Bloodthirsty Ants' defense was weak, but their mutated fangs and six sharp limbs were deadly. A single mistake meant being torn apart!
"Song Jie, I'm out of magic energy!" Mu Tingying called, rushing to his side. She had been guarding him earlier — following his orders.
"Hide behind me."
The moment he said that, she gripped the corner of his robe tightly from behind.
It wasn't just fear — she didn't want to be left behind.
As long as they could take to the sky, the Bloodthirsty Ants wouldn't be able to touch them.
Song Jie's bracelet continued to absorb countless remnant souls and essence orbs, but the situation was deteriorating rapidly. They were being attacked from both sides now.
The Military Commander approached him again, her eyes unusually gentle.
"Go now, or they'll swarm this area!"
Song Jie didn't answer. His eyes flicked to a nearby building, and an idea struck him.
"This way!" he shouted.
He raised his arm, and a burst of Radiance magic shot out, slamming into the two-story building beside them.
With a thunderous boom, the entire structure collapsed, scattering debris across the street.
The Military Commander immediately understood his intent. "Wind Element Mage — help clear the way!"
Her deputy reacted instantly. A cyan six-pointed star spun beneath his feet, summoning a fierce tornado that swept the rubble aside, forming a temporary passage.
"Those without magic energy, move out first!" the Commander ordered.
They couldn't afford to waste even a single chance to escape.
Meanwhile, Song Jie had already begun his summoning. Moments later, the Wind Riding Sky Eagle burst out from his Dimensional Space, spreading its vast wings.
"Come up!"
He climbed on first, then pulled Mu Tingying onto the eagle's back.
Hovering in midair, Song Jie's Star Orbit suddenly completed.
Radiance!
Consecutive Laser Shots!
Swoosh—!
Swoosh—!!
Swoosh—!!!
Beams of blinding light tore through the air, sweeping across the Bloodthirsty Ant army like a storm of divine judgment.
Blood splattered across the streets as the swarm was blown back several meters.
The Military Mages fighting nearby were stunned — their jaws dropped in awe.
Too strong!
At this moment, Song Jie was like a living Laser Cannon, blasting continuously into the horde.
The soldiers finally had a chance to breathe, their eyes filled with gratitude and hope.
"Military Commander," Song Jie called out. "Leave this to me — take everyone and retreat!"
He didn't have much magic left. This was the last thing he could do for them.
As for what came after… that would be up to fate.
The Military Commander gave him one last, grateful look before turning to rally her people.
Mu Tingying, seated behind Song Jie, watched as he continued to unleash Radiance after Radiance. Her heart churned with complex emotions.
It was as if, in that moment, she truly saw Song Jie for the first time.
Compared to before — he was like a completely different person.
