Chapter 46 Both Imprisoned
It was already the end of January.
Unreal Entertainment had already released the movie trailers and promotional videos for Pirates of the Caribbean, planning its release during the February winter holidays.
Other films released during the same period included "Shadow Chasing," "My Hometown," "Justice Corridor," and "Bad Man." Teams bold enough to release a movie during the major holiday slot are very confident in their work.
Demon Star invested in "Shadow Chasing," possibly because they saw Unreal Entertainment filming Pirates of the Caribbean and felt unwilling to be outdone, so they wanted to test the waters. The director of this film, Qin Kai, is a well-known director in the industry.
Initially, Matthias Engel sent the script for Pirates of the Caribbean to Qin Kai, but it was directly rejected. His reply was simple: he wasn't interested in movies adapted from games. Subsequently, he accepted Hans Richter's invitation to make this spy thriller, and even invited top-tier actors to join. Most of the investment money was spent on their salaries.
Hans looked at the holiday movie posters and smiled: "With such fierce competition, Pirates of the Caribbean still dares to be released during this window; truly, ignorance is bliss."
"Herr Richter, because this is a movie adapted from a game, and the game is extremely popular, they are confident that players will also go see this movie," his assistant said from the side.
Hans was somewhat disdainful of this: "Games are games, and movies are movies. There's a big difference between the two. Don't think that just because a game does well, the movie will be loved by audiences. Audiences aren't fools."
"Herr Richter, you're right; they're too conceited."
The two echoed each other, full of laughter and joy.
Over at Unreal Entertainment, Carl Schmidt was still very apprehensive. This was the first movie released by the company, and having good word-of-mouth was crucial. Although he hadn't invested much money, Matthias had invested a lot. He was also worried for Matthias, fearing that if it lost money, the investment would be wasted.
Including actor salaries, all expenses totaled 80 million Euros. This didn't even count the special effects team Matthias found. Carl guessed that the special effects probably also cost tens of millions, bringing the total cost to over 100 million Euros.
This was a huge gamble. In contrast, Matthias appeared very calm.
That day, Matthias organized a dinner with Carl and Director Kevin.
"The movie shooting is finally over. Cheers!"
The three raised their glasses and drank them dry.
Carl lit a cigarette: "Matthias, I feel like you're not worried about the box office at all. My hair is almost falling out lately."
"What's the use of worrying? It's still the same saying: 'Man proposes, God disposes.'"
Carl gave a bitter smile: "My stress resistance isn't good. I'll drink a toast as a self-punishment."
Kevin: "I'm very confident in this movie. With the special effects, the entire film has reached top-tier standard, even surpassing many. I can't guarantee how much money it will make, but it definitely won't lose money."
Matthias: "I have a premonition that the box office will be a big hit."
The three exchanged smiles and ended the dinner in a pleasant atmosphere. After dinner, it was already past midnight when Matthias returned to the apartment. He saw Laura sitting in front of the computer, playing Pirates of the Caribbean. She was already level 20. She controlled her character, standing in Royal Port, conversing with Elizabeth at the port. The two chatted happily, back and forth.
"Matthias, you're back! I finally met Elizabeth. Huh? Did you drink?"
"Yeah, I had a few drinks with friends. You keep playing, I'm going back to my room to sleep."
"Ah, wait, Matthias, look! Elizabeth has been captured!"
Matthias stopped and checked the game's situation. A group of marines rushed into the port and captured Elizabeth. The leader was named Lord Beckett.
"That Beckett must be a bad guy! I'm going to take him down!"
Seeing Elizabeth being captured, Laura immediately attacked Beckett. A level 20 character rashly attacking a lord — the outcome was predictable. A group of guards picked up their muskets and shot Laura dead. When Laura's character woke up again, she was already in the prison of Royal Port.
[You have been arrested and imprisoned. Your sentence is 10 days. You can be released after ten days.]
"No, how did I end up in jail?!" Laura was frantic.
"You attacked a lord, what do you expect?" Matthias was speechless.
"But he captured Elizabeth!"
"That must be part of the plot. You should quietly watch the story, not rashly attack."
"Hmmph!!!" Laura pouted and sulked. "Matthias, can you get me out of prison?"
"Jailbreak?"
"Exactly. I wonder if this game has that feature."
"Uh, it does have that feature, but the prison in Royal Port is heavily guarded. I can't rescue you by myself."
"I still want to see the plot, please, please rescue me~~" Laura held Matthias's shoulder, shaking him and pouting.
So, Matthias entered the game, controlling his level 40 character to infiltrate the prison. Just as he was picking the lock, he was discovered by the prison guards. Both of them ended up in jail.
"I'm sorry, Matthias!" Laura bowed deeply.
"It's okay. In ten days, you'll be a good person again. Rescuing you is impossible. If you want to see the plot, you can watch other people's live streams."
"That's a good idea."
So Laura inadvertently opened Lena's live stream and couldn't stop watching. Actually, as the game administrator using the Game Producer System, Matthias could completely use modification abilities, but he didn't want to do that. Once the game uses modification functions, it loses its original fun.
In Lena's live stream, she was also in Royal Port, witnessing the scene of Elizabeth being captured. Many players didn't understand who had such great power to capture Elizabeth, the daughter of the Royal Port governor. And who was this Beckett?
Beckett was King George II's representative, wielding great power. Most importantly, he had an irreconcilable conflict with Captain Jack Sparrow. Lord Beckett presented arrest warrants for Will, Elizabeth, and former Commodore Norrington, to arrest those who had helped Jack. Despite Governor Swann's strong objections, Beckett still imprisoned Elizabeth.
But he did not imprison Will; Beckett hoped to obtain Jack's Golden Compass. If Will could obtain Jack's compass, in exchange, he would pardon Will and grant Jack Sparrow a privateering commission, making him a Royal Pirate.
Will agreed and set off to find Jack. The plot of the second part officially began to unfold.
"Elizabeth, we meet again!"
Upon learning of Elizabeth's imprisonment, Laura immediately logged in, and sure enough, Elizabeth was in the cell across from hers. Elizabeth gave an awkward smile: "Hello, Laura."
And so, the two quietly discussed how to escape from prison.
