"The time shown on the clock is not real-time."
After cross-referencing, Lin and Yama discovered the time shown on the clock differed from the time within the Bubble Universe.
Lin suddenly asked, "How long have we been here?"
"I'm not sure. Subjectively, about forty minutes."
Forty minutes...
Two pairs of eyes simultaneously looked at the three hands recording the passage of time on the clock. They found the displayed time was 12:43 AM.
In other words, the clock was actually displaying the time that had elapsed since they arrived?
"Lin, Yama, come in for dinner."
His mother's call made the two exchange a look. With silent understanding, they turned, closed the door, and returned to the room together.
The atmosphere at the dinner table was harmonious. The two grown men were chatting, the woman watched them with a smile, while Lin and Yama ate in silence.
"Yama is truly cute." At some point, the Councilman turned the topic to Yama. He patted Yama head quite affectionately. "Though neither of you as a couple has white hair, why does Yama have silver-white hair?"
"Likely the dominant expression of a recessive gene." The woman was also a scholar, proficient in biological researchāthis was basic knowledge everyone knew.
"Well, that's quite nice. Little Yama, you must grow up to be a great beauty, just like your motherāgreat figure and very pretty."
Yama gave a flat "Mm" and buried her face in her bowl, quickly gulping down her food.
Lin was a bit surprised. Yama eating manner was as if she hadn't eaten anything good in many years. This woman, even more of an "iceberg" than him, actually had a "foodie" side.
Even more surprisingly, after eating with such speed that one wondered if she even tasted itālike Zhu Bajie eating the Ginseng Fruitāshe turned her head quite nonchalantly and said: "When I grow up, my figure should be quite good. A C-cup, just the right size for a hand to grasp. The aesthetic perfection will be absolute."
"..."
"..."
This sudden remark, which could rival a dirty joke, left everyone at the table in stunned silence.
"I'm full."
She pushed her bowl away and left the table, leaving the three adults staring at each other.
...
"Aren't you going to say a few more words to your parents and that man?" Yama heard footsteps behind her. She turned from the window and spoke coldly to Lin as he entered. "This is a valuable opportunity for you. After all, you didn't get to speak with them many times."
"...Were you joking just now?"
"Joking? Why would I be joking?"
Yama responded as if it were perfectly natural: "I am indeed a person with flawless appearance, just as he said. I was merely informing them beforehand that I will grow up exactly as he described."
Lin was beginning to find this person incomprehensible.
The coldness she showed while hunting him wasn't an act, yet outside of that, she didn't seem to have the heartless, cold personality he had expected.
"When meeting people you can never see again, it's better to be more honest."
Yama spoke in a low voice, but Lin couldn't hear her clearly.
...
"..."
The two in the study were silent. One leisurely smoked, puffing on the cigarette as clouds swirled, while the other watched the smoking man with a cold gazeāas if the previous warm atmosphere had been entirely faked.
"Old Ma, do you know? When I found out you were marrying her, I was very happy. Most people around me are just political partners; there are very few I can call friends. So I hoped the heart-to-heart bond between us would be free of any impurities."
"And when Lin was born, I was even more delighted, especially since you were willing to let me give him my name."
"But looking at it now, perhaps the name you originally gave Linā'Zero'āalready exposed those 'scientist' thoughts of yours that I can't wrap my head around."
The Councilman's gaze had turned cold. He pointed with his burning cigarette at the opened document on the desk.
"What is this 'Modified Experiment Record' about? Why do I see my nephew and niece's names on it? What have you done to your son and daughter?"
The man's cold gaze did not change. He didn't even look at the evidence the Councilman had found; he just stared coldly at him.
"Old Ma, I need an explanation."
"..."
The Councilman pressed his cigarette butt into his palm. He could tell his long-time friend was conveying one thing with his eyes: there was no explanation.
In fact, the Councilman was well aware of the couple's personality traits. They had displayed an obsession with biological research as far back as their student days. He had met them in a private lab; he knew better than anyone that the man was capable of such things.
But when it actually happened, the Councilman found he had actually believed these two could never lay a hand on their own children.
Now it seemed that because they were their own children, it was easier to strike.
"Is there a problem with making my children more perfect?" The man finally spoke. His words, overflowing with coldness, made the room's temperature plummet.
The Councilman suddenly laughed. He brushed back his bangs and gave his good friend a slight smile. "Old Ma, do you know? In many novels, there's a typical image of a mad scientistāno humanity, no morals, no bottom line. They will sacrifice everything for so-called evolution and perfection, whether it's those around them or themselves."
"I thought it was impossible for such stupid people to exist in reality, but I seem to have forgotten that fictional works are based on reality. And I never expected to have two living examples right beside me."
His smile became increasingly brilliant. "Your experiments even continued until last week. You've mostly finished studying the tolerances of Lin and Yama. Next would be their ability indices. Goodness, even the white mice in the lab directly under me haven't been studied like this."
"And do you know what makes me want to punch your face the most?"
The Councilman's pupils shrank. He gritted his teeth, almost forcing the words out of his throat in a roar: "You were even thinking of having them inbreed to manufacture offspring?!"
There was no need to doubt the dangers of inbreeding. These two, who were at the pinnacle of biology, couldn't possibly not know. But they also understood that the probability of a genius appearing in inbreeding would increaseāand this probability would become 100% in their countless experiments.
Using two nearly perfect siblings to create even more perfect offspring.
Only one word appeared in the Councilman's heart.
And he didn't feel the need to restrain it at all.
"Animals."
Angry eyes and cold eyes locked in a confrontation.
