Chapter 120 - Chapter 120: The Navigation Device

Chapter 120: The Navigation Device

POV: Adam

The war council convened in Kaer Trolde's strategy room—a chamber I'd passed dozens of times but never entered until today.

Maps covered every surface. Not the decorative kind that nobles displayed for prestige, but working documents bearing marks from countless campaigns. Skellige's military history was written in ink and pins, generations of strategic thinking accumulated in a room designed for serious planning.

The Navigation Device sat at the table's center, its needle swinging through patterns I'd grown to recognize during the voyage home.

"Show them." Crach's voice carried the weight of leadership. Around him, Skellige's senior commanders waited—warriors whose scars told stories their silence wouldn't share.

I activated the device, projecting its readings into the air above the table. Light traced dimensional signatures across a map of the continent, each point indicating Hunt activity over the past month.

"Dozens of small rifts. Testing barriers, mapping weaknesses." My finger traced the concentration patterns. "Three primary focus areas: here, here, and here."

"Kaer Morhen, Skellige, Ellander." Geralt named the locations. "Strategic strongholds with significant magical infrastructure."

"They're planning simultaneous assault." The implication hung heavy. "Hit all three at once, overwhelm defenses through distributed pressure."

"When?" Crach's question cut to the essential.

"Based on escalation patterns—two months. Maybe less."

POV: Ciri

The strategic debate that followed revealed divisions she hadn't expected.

"We defend." A commander named Björk—veteran of thirty years, scarred from battles she couldn't identify—struck the table for emphasis. "Skellige's islands have never fallen to invasion. The Hunt won't be different."

"The Hunt teleports." Lambert's counter came sharp. "Doesn't matter how strong your walls are if they can appear inside them."

"Then we fill the inside with warriors. Meet them wherever they manifest."

"With what numbers? You've seen the device—they can open rifts anywhere. You'd need armies in every village."

"We have armies."

"You have hundreds. They have thousands. If they commit their full force..." Geralt let the implication settle.

"Then we don't let them commit their full force." Adam's contribution drew attention. "Offense disrupts their planning. If we can strike Tir ná Lia before they're ready—"

"Strike their world?" Björk's skepticism was audible. "With what? A handful of warriors against an entire dimension?"

"Not an entire dimension. Their leadership. Their staging areas. The coordination that makes multi-front assault possible." Adam's hand found the map's northern edge. "The device shows a permanent rift here—hidden, heavily guarded, but stable. That's their door. If we can use it..."

"We become the invasion. Hit them where they're not expecting, disrupt their preparations, withdraw before they can respond." Crach's voice carried dawning understanding. "Raiding strategy. Skellige's specialty."

"Hybrid approach." Adam nodded. "Strengthen defenses here. Prepare strike team for Tir ná Lia. Use both simultaneously—defense and offense, forcing them to split attention."

POV: Adam

The continental coordination happened through messengers, magical mirrors, and Triss's communication network.

Each response brought complications.

Redania: King Radovid commits two thousand troops for Oxenfurt defense. Expects territorial considerations post-conflict.

Temeria: Commander Natalis offers eight hundred experienced soldiers. Requests reconstruction assistance and formal recognition of refugee status.

Lodge: Support confirmed as agreed. Magical barriers, teleportation assistance, intelligence sharing. No territorial demands.

Kaedwen: Observers only. King Henselt uncommitted until threat more clearly demonstrated.

And privately, through channels that officially didn't exist:

Cahir: Nilfgaard publicly neutral. Emperor considers Hunt threat exaggerated. However, intelligence suggests concern at highest levels. Will provide early warning of Hunt movements if detectable. Risk of execution if discovered—consider this debt repaid from Mahakam.

"Coalition forming." Crach studied the responses spread across the strategy table. "Imperfect, but forming."

"First time continental powers have worked together in decades." Geralt's observation carried historical weight. "Usually they're too busy fighting each other."

"Common enemy creates common purpose. Temporarily." The Jarl's cynicism was earned through experience. "After Hunt's defeated, old rivalries return. But for now—unity. Or something like it."

POV: Adam

The fire's call came strongest at night.

I'd returned to the fortress forge—Thorfinn's domain, where heat and hammer transformed raw metal into useful forms. The blacksmith had continued teaching me during our months apart through proxy instruction, his apprentices conveying techniques I practiced during spare moments.

But tonight wasn't about smithing.

The volcanic ley lines beneath Skellige pulsed with energy I could feel through Seismic Sense—hot, alive, waiting. Each meditation session brought the sensation closer, fire's nature becoming clearer even without the ability to command it.

[ Estimated manifestation: Level 50-55 (accelerated from Level 60) ]

The numbers meant something specific: fire might come during the Hunt assault rather than after. Combat intensity combined with volcanic proximity could trigger the fourth element's awakening when I needed it most—or at the worst possible moment.

"You're drawn to the flames again." Ciri's voice came from the forge's entrance. Through our bond, I felt her curiosity mixed with concern.

"Fire's approaching. Faster than expected."

"Is that good or dangerous?"

"Yes." My laugh carried genuine amusement despite the weight of the answer. "Both. It means I might have four elements when the Hunt attacks. It also means I might be learning to control fire in the middle of battle."

"Because our lives aren't complicated enough."

"Apparently not." I turned from the forge, found her silhouette framed by doorway light. "The coalition's forming. Defenses are being planned. Strike team's being assembled. We're doing everything possible to prepare."

"And?"

"And I'm still terrified. Not of dying—of failing. Of watching people die because I wasn't strong enough, or fast enough, or smart enough." The admission came easier than expected. "The Lodge meeting was political theater. This is actual war against dimensional invaders. The stakes are incomparable."

"The stakes are always incomparable when you're living through them." Ciri crossed to me, her warmth a comfort I'd learned to depend on. "We've survived everything so far. Survived together, grew stronger together, built alliances together. Whatever the Hunt brings, we face it the same way."

"Together."

"Always."
