Chapter 71 - Chapter 71: Blood of the Phoenix

The lab was quiet, almost reverent, as I carried the sleeping phoenix into its containment circle. Its golden feathers glimmered faintly under the soft glow of enchanted lanterns, the warmth radiating from its body almost intoxicating. I carefully lowered it onto a bed of soft velvet, murmuring a calming charm to maintain its slumber.

Keeping it asleep was essential. A single moment of panic, a twitch of awareness, and it could vanish in a blaze of fire and wings. It had to remain under control while I worked—controlled, but unharmed.

I began the extraction carefully, drawing minute amounts of its blood into vials for study. Even in sleep, the life force in the phoenix pulsed with a rhythm unlike anything I had ever encountered. It was raw, primal, almost infinite. My mind raced with the possibilities. A bloodline like this… to merge with a human? The potential was staggering. Fire magic coursed in its veins. Regeneration, healing, longevity—every ounce of life essence could be woven into my own body.

I sat back and looked at the vials, feeling the rush of power beckon. "This is going to change everything," I whispered to myself.

My thoughts immediately went to the system store. A quick scroll revealed a potion recipe that made my pulse quicken: Perfect Gene Fusion.

The description was clear: a potion capable of fusing a magical bloodline perfectly into a wizard's body. One bloodline, one wizard—no compromise, no error, no repeated use. I didn't hesitate. My points were abundant, unused, and this… this was exactly the experiment I had been preparing for my entire life. I purchased it instantly.

Returning to the lab, I prepared my ingredients. Many were already in my collection, remnants from past experiments and Herpo's old notes. For the rest, I borrowed from Salazar, who, of course, insisted on watching over the procedure—his curiosity about the phoenix bordering on obsession.

The brewing took hours, each step exacting precision. The final result was breathtaking: a blood-red potion that shimmered with its own inner fire. I stared at it, my reflection warped in the swirling crimson liquid.

"Well," I murmured, "here goes nothing."

I downed the potion in one swift gulp, and immediately the world turned inside out. Pain tore through me like a living thing. My knees buckled, my body folding onto the cold stone floor of the lab as fire seemed to crawl through my veins. A scream ripped from my lips, choked by the torrent of blood I coughed up.

It was like my body was purging itself—perfecting itself. Black sludge oozed from my pores, carrying impurities away from my system. My blood burned, each heartbeat a drum of agony and rebirth. I collapsed into darkness, unconscious. Time lost all meaning.

Hours? Days? Centuries? I could not tell. My body seemed to stretch beyond limits, reshaping itself with every agonizing pulse. I woke, gasping, bloodied, then passed out again, over and over, until my senses finally returned in full.

When I opened my eyes for the last time, I knew. The pain had subsided, replaced by an overwhelming vitality that surged through me. Life force brimming. Every cell in my body vibrated with energy, my veins singing with the raw, fiery essence of the phoenix bloodline. My fire magic felt sharper, more instinctive. My wounds could mend before my eyes.

I rose to my feet, shivering, not from pain, but from the sheer magnitude of the power now coursing through me. My fingers tingled as sparks of golden fire danced across my palms. Healing magic felt almost too easy; fire magic almost instinctive.

I walked to the phoenix, still sleeping in its containment circle. The bond was… faint, but tangible. I could feel its essence intertwined with mine, like threads of molten gold weaving through my very soul.

"This is just the beginning," I whispered, a smile touching my lips despite the lingering aches. "You and I—we're going to be unstoppable."

Outside the lab, the castle remained unaware of what had just occurred. I had touched the boundary of life itself, fused the blood of a legendary creature into my own veins, and emerged… reborn.

And somewhere deep inside, I knew one thing for certain: this was going to change everything.

The phoenix stirred slightly in its sleep, and I felt it respond—an echo of recognition. My familiar, my bond, my power.

And I was ready.
