"Even gods need to eat, though some forget the joy of hunger."
---
Gotham's night air was heavy with rain and fryer oil — the perfect perfume for the four exhausted travelers who had, not an hour ago, survived a volcano, an ancient cult and a very traumatic express jump across the globe, courtesy of King himself.
Inside the Dairy Queen, the fluorescent lights buzzed faintly.
The table was a battlefield of its own — trays overflowing with burgers, fries and half-melted towers of butterscotch ice cream.
Nika was the first to speak, spoon dangling from her mouth.
"So… consensus?" She said between bites. "King's a monster."
Maya snorted, mouth full of fries. "Monster? He teleported us here by jumping. Through space. Even Superman can't even do that!"
Damian grumbled, stabbing at his sundae. "He doesn't teleport. He just… ignores physics."
Nika laughed. "That's worse! You know what he said to me once? 'Gravity is an opinion.' Who even says that?"
Maya leaned back, shaking her head. "A cosmic lunatic who makes his own laws of motion."
At the end of the table, Suren Darga poked suspiciously at a cheeseburger. The young man's eyes flicked toward the others, uncertain.
"My father said mortal food is indulgence." He muttered. "That it poisons the soul."
Nika grinned, shoving a fry into his hand. "Your dad's wrong about a lot of things like my mother and grandfather. Try it."
Soren hesitated, then bit in. His eyes widened slightly — confusion, then astonishment, then something close to delight.
"It's… warm," He said softly. "And salty. And… alive."
"Welcome to the mortal world." Damian said with a faint smirk. "Where poison tastes good."
The group broke into quiet laughter — the kind that came only after surviving something vast and terrible. For a moment, they were just kids again.
Maya was halfway through her third burger when she paused, eyes narrowing.
"Anyone else feel that?"
The others stopped. The air had shifted — gone cold, metallic.
Outside, the neon signs flickered. A low hum rose from the street.
Through the windows, figures began to appear — armored silhouettes marked with the black sigil of Lu'un Darga.
Nika's hand went to her dagger. "We can't even eat in peace—"
But before any of them could stand, every soldier outside froze.
A tremor passed through the ground. One by one, the soldiers convulsed — then collapsed like puppets with their strings cut.
Silence.
The four sat motionless, staring out through the glass at the unmoving bodies.
Steam from the fries curled between them like ghosts.
Maya's voice came first, low and sharp.
"Did we do that?"
Damian shook his head slowly. "No. Someone else did."
Soren's hands trembled slightly as he looked at the fallen soldiers. "They… they were my people."
Nika reached over, resting a hand on his shoulder. "Not anymore. You're here with us."
The rain started again, soft and steady against the window.
Somewhere beyond Gotham's skyline, a ripple of power spread — unfathomable and patient.
King's words echoed in Damian's mind:
"You fought to learn why. The reason hasn't finished teaching you yet."
