Chapter 439 - Chapter 439: Attention of the Black Templars

Chapter 439: Attention of the Black Templars

The intensity and scope of the energy fluctuations triggered by the Genesis Particle release device on the barren planet far exceeded conventional industrial activities or weapons testing.

Even though the experimental zone was located at the edge of the star system, a considerable distance from the Death World base, the energy signature, which was akin to the birth of a nova, was inevitably captured by the high-sensitivity sensor arrays deployed in orbit and on the surface of the Death World.

This naturally included the monitoring equipment set up by the Black Templars company in their mountain peak fortress.

As Ryo had expected, the Black Templars did not remain silent about this.

About three standard hours after the energy fluctuations subsided, a Black Templars Thunderhawk gunship departed from the hangar of the mountain peak fortress and flew straight toward the main landing platform of the Death World base.

The gunship's engines emitted their characteristic low roar. On its pitch-black armor, the Imperial Aquila and the Black Templars' cross insignia appeared especially solemn under the pale light of the Death World.

Ryo was not surprised; he had long since rehearsed this scenario.

He issued the command to permit the Thunderhawk gunship to land and waited in a conference room on the Eternal Seeker used for receiving important external guests.

The airtight door slid open, and two giants stepped into the room.

The one leading was none other than the Captain of the Black Templars company, Brother Hector.

He wore standard black power armor, his pauldrons engraved with the company's runes and the fortress insignia symbolizing steadfast defense. He wore no helmet, revealing a weather-beaten face with hard lines and eyes as sharp as an eagle's.

Following beside him was the company's Chief Librarian, Brother Eckhardt.

He, too, wore no helmet. His short, graying hair was cropped extremely close to his scalp. His face was leaner than Hector's, but unseen psychic flames seemed to dance within his eyes.

His power armor was inlaid with numerous psychic runes and book-shaped decorations, displaying his dual identity as a psyker and a keeper of knowledge.

The presence of the two Astartes made the originally spacious conference room feel somewhat cramped.

They gave Ryo a slight nod and a brief military salute. Their posture carried the discipline inherent to the Astartes, seeped into their very bones, and a habitual scrutiny toward non-Legion personnel.

"Magos Ryo," Captain Hector's voice was like rocks colliding, direct and without redundancy. "Not long ago, our monitoring systems detected anomalous and intense energy releases on a neighboring planet. Its pattern does not match any known Imperial technology or common threat.

"Under the orders of the Primarch, I have a responsibility to ensure the safety of this star sector and to understand any event that might affect our defensive posture."

His gaze locked onto Ryo's unfluctuating mechanical face. "Could you inform us of the purpose and nature of that experiment?"

Ryo's crimson optical lenses steadily met Hector's gaze, and his synthesized voice rang out in its usual steady tone: "That was a feasibility verification experiment for planetary environmental restoration technology."

He paused slightly and brought up a pre-prepared, filtered data chart, projecting it onto the main screen of the conference room.

The chart displayed comparative data on surface composition, atmospheric density, and temperature distribution in the experimental zone of the barren planet before and after the energy release, highlighting the establishment and stabilization trend of the water cycle system.

"As you know, whether it was due to the fierce battles of the Great Crusade or the devastating consequences of the Horus Heresy, a massive number of worlds within the Imperium's borders have been reduced to uninhabitable Death Worlds or barren planets due to failed terraforming, ecological collapse, or the abuse of weaponry."

Ryo's data stream cited several famous cases from Imperial archives, such as a Garden World completely corrupted by a virus bomb, or an industrial planet whose atmosphere dissipated and whose surface was glassed due to orbital bombardment.

"Humanity has tread the stars for over thirty millennia. Many planets have been continuously developed and extracted, their environmental carrying capacities having reached their limits long ago, some even tracing back to before the Dark Age of Technology.

"Restoring the ecological environments of these worlds holds negligible strategic value for alleviating the Imperium's population pressure, stabilizing frontier worlds, and even enhancing logistical support capabilities."

His explanation was logically rigorous, based entirely on the practical needs of the Imperium.

"The core of the technology I tested lies in a special energy field capable of accelerating geological stabilization processes on a planetary scale, promoting the generation and circulation of basic atmospheric components, and laying the foundation for the subsequent introduction of screened life forms. The goal is to establish an efficient and controllable planetary environmental restoration process."

Captain Hector listened silently, his sharp gaze sweeping over the data on the screen.

He was not well-versed in the specific technical details of environmental restoration, but the strategic significance Ryo articulated aligned with the Imperial dilemmas he understood.

Worlds with depleted resources and deteriorating environments were indeed persistent ailments the Imperium faced.

"Does this technology possess military application potential? For example, altering an enemy world's environment as a weapon?" Hector pressed; this was his instinctual concern as a military commander.

"Theoretically, any terraforming technology could be used for offensive purposes," Ryo did not deny it, but quickly brought the topic back within a controllable scope. "But this experiment focused on restoration and reconstruction. Its energy release pattern is constructive, aimed at creating rather than destroying.

"Weaponizing it would require entirely different energy focusing and release strategies, which is not the current research focus."

At this time, Chief Librarian Eckhardt, who had been silent, spoke up. His voice carried a resonance unique to psykers: "Within that energy fluctuation, I sensed an... activity that transcends the purely material plane. It seemed to touch upon the realm of life itself."

Ryo's optical lenses turned to Eckhardt, his data stream steady and unfluctuating.

The psychic perception of a Librarian was indeed acute.

"The interaction between energy fields and matter can indeed produce complex biochemical reactions; this is an unavoidable byproduct of the environmental restoration process." Ryo admitted a partial truth, but cleverly sidestepped the core. "The formation of basic organic molecules was observed within the experimental zone, which is a foundational step in constructing an ecosystem.

"As for more complex life phenomena, that is not the focus of attention at present, and its potential pathways are far from clear."

His answer was half-true, half-false. It admitted the catalytic effect of Genesis Particles on the origin of life, but confined it within the framework of "environmental restoration byproducts" and "unclear potential," avoiding direct disclosure of its core capability to actively guide and accelerate the evolution of life.

Hector and Eckhardt exchanged a glance.

They maintained their inherent caution toward experiments involving unknown energies conducted by Magi of the Mechanicus.

But Ryo's explanation was logically consistent, and his stated goals aligned with the interests of the Imperium, showing no obvious signs of heresy or dangerous tendencies.

More importantly, the Primarch's order was to garrison and remain vigilant, not to interfere with the lawful research of an Explorer Magos.

"We understand," Captain Hector finally said, his tone softening slightly. "Thank you for your explanation, Magos Ryo. Please understand, this is my duty."

"The needs of duty are understandable," Ryo replied.

The brief meeting ended there.

Hector and Eckhardt said no more. After saluting, they turned and left. The Thunderhawk gunship soon lifted off, returning to the mountain peak fortress.

Ryo stood quietly in the conference room, his crimson optical lenses watching them leave.

He had successfully provided a logical and technically sound explanation for the Genesis experiment that fit the Imperial narrative, temporarily assuaging the Black Templars' suspicions.

However, he knew that Librarian Eckhardt's perception had brushed against the edge of the truth.

The potential of the Genesis Particles extended far beyond environmental restoration.

Its true value lay in guiding, repairing, and even reshaping life forms.

Research in this area had to be conducted much more covertly.

He brought up the real-time monitoring data from the barren planet; the ecosystem within the energy shield was still rapidly evolving.

Regarding the possibilities of life restoration, he already had a preliminary theoretical model, but large-scale application experiments would require a more secure time and more complete isolation measures.
