The slums were alive with chaos. The sound of screaming, shouting, and shattering wood cut through the night, but Emma could barely hear it over the racing of her own heart.
Every step she took was heavy with pain, every breath a battle against exhaustion. Hazel, swaddled tightly against her chest, let out a small, confused cry, unaware of the world already moving to destroy her.
Maria and Isolde walked on either side of her, moving quickly through the narrow alleys. They watched the shadows closely for any sign of danger. Every noise behind them, like the sound of metal or clothes moving, made them feel more and more nervous setting their nerves on edge.
The Luminai accord guards and soldiers were close behind. Even though they were tired and weak, they still hunted carefully for the newborn child and did not slow down. Their zeal driven by fear and loyalty to their lord's commands.
Emma stumbled. Sharp pain shot through her stomach, reminding her of the difficult birth. Every muscle in her body felt like it was fighting against her. Her fingers tightened around Hazel's small body. She could not fall. She could not let the child fall. Not now.
"Keep moving," Isolde whispered, pressing forward. "We are almost at the canal. Once we reach it, we can lose them in the shadows."
Emma nodded, though every ounce of her strength screamed to stop. Kael had ran another direction, diverting some of the soldiers from their path giving them an heartbeat of time to escape. But she knew they would soon find them.
Ahead, a narrow passage opened into an abandoned warehouse district. The smell of mildew and rust filled the air. Emma stepped cautiously, wincing as her legs protested, but she allowed herself the briefest hope. Perhaps here, they could hide. Perhaps here, Hazel could take could breath freely like a normal child.
But the world had other plans.
A shout rose behind them, loud and authoritative. Emma's pulse froze. "They've found us," she murmured.
"Not yet," Isolde corrected sharply, though her face was tight with tension. "They're close but not here. Just keep moving."
They ran faster, the ground slippery from recent rain. The moon, now a deep, bruised brown, hung overhead, its light distorted and eerie. Emma felt the magic around them pulse faintly in response. It was getting weaker and harder to feel, but it hadn't completely disappeared.

Kael moved through the city like a shadow. The rot within him gnawed at every step, slowing and weakening him, but he forced himself to keep going. He dared not to even look back. He knew that if he stopped for even a second, Emma, Hazel and the others were as good as dead
He had already given up and sacrificed everything, even his own body, because of his love and his choice to rebel. By refusing to kill Emma, he had ruined his own life, and now he had to deal with the consequences by himself. Each painful and ragged breath with each steps reminded him that the Luminai Accord never stopped punishing those who disobeyed their rules.
He thought about Emma. She was small and appeared fragile, but she had a strong spirit. She had risked everything to heal people when it was forbidden and had shown great courage while carrying their child. He made a silent promise to himself; if he died, he would die knowing he had protected them.
----------------
Emma felt her strength fading. Her body was still in pain from giving birth, and she felt weak and tired. But she did not stop. When Hazel's small fingers curled around hers, she felt more determined. Holding her daughter reminded her that she had to keep going and could not give up now.
"We need to find shelter...a place to hide," she said, breathing hard. Her voice trembling but firm. "We can't stay out in the open like this."
Maria looked down at the baby---Hazel. "There is a safe place we can go for now," she said her eyes scanning the alley. "We have to trust that it will keep us hidden."
Emma pressed her lips together. She felt like crying or screaming, and she wanted to just lie down and stop moving. But she knew she couldn't. She had already given birth to her child, and now she had to do whatever it took to keep her alive.
----------
Kael ran into an old, ruined courtyard with broken stones and falling walls. He hid in the dark, trying to stay as still and quiet as possible. He could hear the soldiers nearby, shouting to one another as they searched for him.
But the rot was spreading faster than he expected. He felt a sharp pain in his chest, and his vision started to go blurry. His legs were so weak he almost fell down. But he didn't stop. He only thought of Emma and Hazel and keeping them safe.
------------
Emma and her companions found temporary refuge in a small, abandoned chapel on the edge of the district. Its windows were broken, the benches were knocked over, and the altar was ruined from years of being left alone. It was a messy place but it was hidden and isolated.
Emma fell to her knees and began to cry. She carefully put Hazel down on the dusty floor and held her tight. Her hands shook as she brushed a strand of hair from her baby's face.
"Hazel," she whispered softly, her voice breaking. "You are everything. You are hope. You are the future."
The baby cooed softly, unaware of the destiny that pressed down upon her.
Isolde stepped closer and looked around the empty chapel. "They will surely find us," she said. "And when they come, we have to be ready to fight. We can't let them take the baby, no matter what."
Emma looked up, her expression turning serious. "She is going to live," she promised. It sounded like a prayer. "Even if I die or we all die, she will survive."

In the vampire regions, Lord Malrick Viremot stood in his office. Reports about weaknesses kept coming confirming the signs of the prophecy more.
"The child," he whispered, voice low with a lethal mix of fury and dark respect. "This child must be killed no matter the cost. "Send more soldiers," he commanded.
-------------
Back in the chapel, Emma held Hazel close, protecting her like a delicate light. Her body was in deep pain and she felt very weak, but she refused to give up.
She looked at Isolde and Maria and spoke in a shaky but serious voice. "Take her and go," she said. "Hide her and keep running. You cannot let them see you, and you cannot let them find her,"
Isolde nodded, knowing how hard this choice was for Emma. Maria stepped toward them, ready to take Hazel and hide her in the dark where she would be safe.
Emma felt a sharp pain in her heart, thinking about what she was losing. Kael was still out there somewhere, fighting to stay alive, and she didn't know if she would ever see him again. But she couldn't stop to worry about him as Hazel's life was the most important thing at the moment.
They disappeared into the dark night, still hearing the sounds of the people chasing them.
