Arthur didn't wait for the officers to continue their investigation and shouted urgently.
"There's something inside the cocoon! Step back!"
No sooner had the words left his mouth than chaos erupted.
A monstrous, merfolk-like creature burst from the cocoon, launching itself at the nearest personnel. From the water, countless others emerged, their rows of jagged teeth glinting under the sunlight as they swarmed the pier.
The creatures were grotesque, their pale gray skin coated in slimy mucus, faces twisted with unnatural distortions, some appearing as if their skin had been peeled away. Their hands were large, veined, and clawed. Most terrifying of all was their mouths, occupying a third of their faces, packed with serrated teeth, interspersed with foul-smelling mucus.
Arthur's face registered shock. He hadn't expected to encounter anything like this here, and yet these monsters resembled the merfolk from Adrian's "Cthulhu" visions far too closely.
Despite the shock, he reacted immediately, lunging forward to strike the closest creature and knock it back.
The merfolk surged from the water with terrifying speed, their jaws snapping at anyone slow enough to catch their attention. Officers caught unprepared were mauled instantly, their screams cut short as blood sprayed across the pier.
Lois froze in terror until Jimmy grabbed her hand.
"Run!" he shouted, dragging her along the slick boards.
Chaos erupted around them, screams and panicked shouts mixing with the sounds of running feet. Those unable to escape were ripped apart by the agile, vicious creatures. Blood pooled on the wooden pier, painting it crimson, the air thick with terror.
Lois stumbled over a stone, crashing to the ground. Her camera gear scattered across the boards.
"Go! Don't worry about me!" she shouted through the pain in her ankle.
Jimmy hesitated, his instinct screaming to save her, but the realization hit him: if he tried, they might both die.
Reluctantly, he pushed forward.
"Roar!" one of the merfolk bellowed as it leapt toward them, saliva dripping from its jagged maw.
Arthur, meanwhile, found himself surrounded by a dense pack. Confident against a single opponent, he struggled as multiple creatures attacked at once. He punched one away, dodged another, but a sharp bite tore into his left arm, sending pain radiating up to his shoulder. With a flash of anger, he smashed the creature's head with his right fist, spinning it violently aside.
Lois and Jimmy pressed forward, desperately navigating the chaos. Suddenly, water splashed across Lois's face. Opening her eyes, she saw a red-haired woman appear, dressed in a green bodysuit and golden crown, her eyes glowing silver-white. She moved with commanding grace, water flowing from her hands like serpents, striking the attacking merfolk.
The creatures were repelled almost instantly. With each strike, a merfolk was struck down, teeth flying from its gaping maw, bodies hurled back into the water.
"You monsters! How dare you attack me!" the red-haired woman shouted, her voice carrying over the pier.
She unleashed water currents like blades, cutting through the swarm with surgical precision. Though her attacks were devastating, Arthur noticed the power in her movements waning slightly.
He rushed forward to support her as she stumbled, but she shook him off, striking a monster with her fist before leaping back into the fray. Another creature caught her from behind, but she severed its head with her water currents.
Then, from above, a beam of Heat Vision cut through the encroaching monsters. The red-haired woman turned in surprise to see a figure descending slowly from the sky, cape billowing, radiating authority and power.
It was Adrian, the man known to the world as Superman. His presence brought immediate relief to the officers and military personnel at the scene. His Heat Vision swept through the pier, obliterating the merfolk with precision and overwhelming force.
No matter how the creatures resisted, Adrian's power was absolute. Blood and body parts rained down, the pier transformed into his one-sided hunting ground.
Yet even as the chaos began to subside, those observing realized that Adrian wasn't merely stopping the attacks to protect the humans. He was systematically eliminating the merfolk around Arthur as well, a calculated, relentless force ensuring no threat remained.
Lois, Jimmy, and Arthur watched, hearts pounding, as the battle unfolded around them, each second etched with fear, awe, and the knowledge that the pier had become a battlefield between humans, monsters, and the superhuman forces of Adrian and the red-haired savior.
