Chapter Four — Before the Fall
Before Ren learned what it meant to be hated, his mother had known what it meant to be loved.
At least, she had believed she did.
Her name was Ayame.
Years before Ren was born, before the Yamanaka compound became a place of pain, she had met the man who would become her husband in a way that felt almost ordinary.
It had been raining that day too.
Ayame remembered standing beneath the wooden awning of a small tea shop, trying to protect herself from the rain while counting the few coins in her hand. She had been living in Konoha for several years, working wherever she could find employment.
She was not a shinobi.
She had no clan name that carried weight.
She had no inherited techniques.
She was simply Ayame.
And in Konoha, that was sometimes enough.
Sometimes it wasn't.
That afternoon, a group of shinobi hurried past the tea shop, their sandals splashing through puddles.
One of them stopped.
A tall young man with pale skin, blond hair, and the familiar Yamanaka clan crest on his clothing.
He looked back at her.
"You're going to catch a cold standing there."
Ayame glanced behind herself.
"Are you talking to me?"
He smiled.
"Unless someone else is hiding under the roof."
She laughed despite herself.
"I can take care of myself."
"I didn't say you couldn't."
He stood beside her.
For several moments, neither spoke.
The rain continued falling.
His name was Daichi Yamanaka.
Ayame would remember that name for the rest of her life.
At first, their relationship was simple.
They talked.
They met in secret.
They walked through the streets of Konoha.
Daichi showed her places inside the village she had never seen.
Ayame told him stories about her life before Konoha.
He listened.
Really listened.
That was what made her fall for him.
Daichi never made her feel small.
He never looked at her as though she were less because she didn't have a famous bloodline.
When he looked at her, she was simply Ayame.
For a while, that was enough.
But the Yamanaka clan was never far away.
Daichi had responsibilities.
A family.
A future.
And expectations.
Ayame knew that.
She knew their relationship would be difficult.
But she believed love could overcome it.
Then she became pregnant.
She remembered telling him.
They had been sitting together near the river.
The evening sun had begun disappearing behind the trees.
Ayame's hands had been shaking.
"Daichi."
He turned.
"What is it?"
She swallowed.
"I'm pregnant."
Silence.
For one terrible moment, she thought he was going to leave.
Then he smiled.
A real smile.
He pulled her into his arms.
"Are you serious?"
She nodded.
He laughed.
Ayame laughed too.
They held each other beside the river and imagined a future that did not exist.
A home.
A family.
A child.
Perhaps even happiness.
Kimiko was born first.
A beautiful little girl with her mother's eyes and her father's blond hair.
Daichi was there when she was born.
He held his daughter carefully, as though she were the most precious thing in the world.
"She has your eyes," he whispered.
Ayame smiled.
"She has your hair."
Kimiko became the center of their world.
And for a while, the Yamanaka clan tolerated the arrangement.
Not happily.
But toleration was enough for Ayame.
She understood that they would never completely accept her.
She only needed Daichi to stand beside her.
Then Ren was born.
Everything changed.
The first signs were subtle.
Whispers.
Glances.
Conversations that stopped whenever Ayame entered a room.
Ren's appearance was different from Kimiko's.
His mother's features were more obvious.
His eyes carried something the elders didn't recognize as purely Yamanaka.
The clan began asking questions.
Then came the tests.
Blood.
Chakra.
Lineage.
Questions about Ayame's family.
Questions Daichi had never cared about before.
The elders gathered.
Ayame remembered sitting in that room with Ren sleeping against her chest.
One elder looked at the child.
"He is not fully Yamanaka."
Daichi stood beside her.
"He is my son."
"That is irrelevant."
Ayame stared at the elder.
"He has your blood."
"Half his blood."
The elder's voice became colder.
"And the other half belongs to an unknown line."
Ayame's fingers tightened around Ren.
"He is a child."
"He is a risk."
Daichi stepped forward.
"He is my son."
Again.
But this time there was hesitation in his voice.
Ayame noticed.
She noticed everything.
The fear.
The pressure.
The clan watching him.
The weight of his family name.
And still, she believed he would choose them.
For years, he did.
Until he didn't.
The final argument came when Ren was four.
Ayame remembered the night before they were expelled.
Daichi had barely spoken.
Kimiko was asleep.
Ren was beside her, holding a small wooden toy.
Ayame looked at her husband.
"You're going to do something."
Daichi didn't answer.
"Daichi."
He turned away.
"They've made their decision."
"Then fight it."
"I can't."
"You can."
"No."
Ayame stood.
"You promised me."
His jaw tightened.
"I know."
"You promised me when Kimiko was born."
Silence.
"You promised me when Ren was born."
Still nothing.
Ayame's voice broke.
"Look at me."
Daichi finally did.
She saw it.
The man she loved was still there.
But he was already losing the battle.
"They're going to cast us out," she whispered.
He said nothing.
"Are you going to let them?"
His silence was the answer.
The next morning, the gates opened.
Not to welcome them.
To remove them.
Ayame had never felt so small.
She held Ren's hand.
Kimiko held the other.
Her husband stood behind the clan elders.
She searched his face one final time.
"Please."
It was the only word she could manage.
Daichi looked at his son.
Then at Kimiko.
Then at Ayame.
For one second, Ayame thought he might step forward.
Instead, he lowered his eyes.
The gates opened.
They were sent away.
And the life Ayame had spent years building disappeared in a single morning.
Now, days later, she watched her children sleeping in the small room behind the market.
Kimiko was curled around Ren, one arm protectively across her little brother.
Ayame sat near the doorway.
She remembered the man she had loved.
She remembered the promise he had made.
And for the first time, she allowed herself to accept the truth.
Daichi had chosen his clan.
He had chosen their name.
He had chosen their approval.
He had chosen everything except his family.
Ayame looked at her children.
Kimiko stirred in her sleep.
Ren whispered something she couldn't understand.
Ayame smiled sadly.
She leaned over and kissed Ren's forehead.
Then Kimiko's.
"You won't become like them," she whispered.
She didn't know where they would live.
She didn't know how she would feed them.
She didn't know what future waited for them.
But she knew one thing.
Her children would never grow up believing that their worth depended on the name attached to their blood.
The Yamanaka clan had taken her home.
They had taken her husband.
They had taken the life she thought she would have.
But they had not taken her children.
And as Ayame watched the first light of morning creep through the window, she made herself a promise.
She would protect Ren.
She would protect Kimiko.
And if the world wanted to make monsters out of her children simply because they were different, then she would teach them something far more dangerous.
How to survive it.
